Around the sides of the trailer are the words "Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board". The location may be Batman Ave with the Swan St Bridge and Botanic Gardens in the background. The series of photos shows the February 1963 MMTB Float entered as part of the Moomba Festival which also coincided with a visit of Queen Elizabeth II. See item 8652 for a Certificate from the City of Melbourne recording the entry of the decorated float. In the background is the Continental Hotel on south-east corner of Lonsdale and Russell Street. This photo was used in the 1963 MMTB Annual Report. The origin of Moomba dates back to 1951, when Melbourne celebrated fifty years of Federation with a parade and the staging of the theatre production 'An Aboriginal Moomba: Out of the Dark'. The following year, the final Labour Day procession was held in Melbourne after running for almost a century. A parade through the streets of central Melbourne have been a key part of the Moomba festival since its beginning. The floats have an annual theme, usually an elaboration on 'Let's get together and have fun', the avowed mission and vision statement of Moomba. In the beginning the floats usually promoted a Commercial or Government organisation, but in later years, as business became more reluctant to spend money on elaborate floats, they tended to represent sporting clubs, ethnic groups and other community organisations (source Melbourne Museum).Mounted colour photograph with cover depicting the COGB Moomba Float. In 1960 and 1961, the International House Students Club organised a float for the Dandenong "Pageant for Progress", to garner support for the Building Fund to contribute to development of a new wing. The Women's Auxiliaries assisted in preparing the float, which also participated in Melbourne's Moomba festival.
