The Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works (now Melbourne Water) was established in 1891. From that time, as part of their work laying water and sewerage connections, they created detailed plans of houses and other buildings in the Melbourne metropolitan area. In 1956 it acquired powers to construct and maintain highways and bridges, protect and improve the foreshores and create and maintain parks within the metropolitan region. This item was donated to the Moorabbin Historical Society in the 1980's by Mr John Herron of Bentleigh. It was brought back from the Boer War by Private W.F. Daff of South Brighton [Later Moorabbin] Private Daff served in the Second Contingent sent to the Boer War 1899 - 1902 South Africa.This item is of Historical Significance because it is linked to the Boer War [1899- 1902] and is of native South African origin.Mr John Herron is a descendant of James Jones an early settler in Moorabbin Shire and the Daff family were early settlers in South Brighton ( Moorabbin).A large natual wood pipe in three pieces with carved bone mouth piece.The bottom piece is on an angle so it stands upright. 'Box Cottage' is so named after the first recorded family to establish a house and market garden on the site in 1865. William and Elizabeth Box. After the death of Elizabeth Box in 1914 the house was leased to August Reitman a potter / sculptor who raised his family there 1917 - 1953. Stefanie Rennick nee Reitmann lived at the house until she left to study teaching. The Lewis Timber Company Ltd acquired the land with The Cottage c1970. The CMHS together with City of Moorabbin Council, a 150 Year Celebration Grant and assistance from Lewis Timber Merchants Pty Ltd reconstructed the original 'Box Cottage' on its present site May 1984. August Reitman 1877-1951 and his wife Frieda 1878- 1942 raised 2 children Stefanie 1918-2006 and William 1920-1997 whilst living at the Box Cottage site. .August was a monumental mason and sculptor and was employed to carve war memorials in Victoria after WW1. He moved his business to Highett in 1953 but continued to use the cottage as a workshop until he sold the property to Lewis Timber P/L c 1970. . William and his descendants have continued the family business to the present day. Alonzo Box was the nephew of William and Elizabeth Box who resided in the Cottage 1865 - 1913. He was the 9th child of John Box 1841 - 1913 and Martha Sheldrake Box who lived in Oakleigh, Alonzo enlisted in the Army and landed at Gallipoli 25/41915. After the evacuation to Egypt he served in France and Flanders and returned to Melbourne February 1918. Alonzo was a pavier / pitcher who was employed to lay the bluestone drains for the roads and sewerage channels in Moorabbin Shire - a skilled and well paid occupation. Alonzo Box was the 9th child of John Box ,who emigrated to Australia in 1854 with his parents, George and Mary Box , and siblings who included William Box. Alonzo enlisted in the 1st AIF and landed at Gallipoli 25/4/1915. After the evacuation to Egypt he served in France and Flanders before returning to Melbourne in February 1918. He married Mary Closter in June 1918. His elder sister Rebecca, who was a missionary in China, sent a bolt of hand embroidered Chinese silk to Mary for her Wedding Dress. This is a copy of the document brought by Henry Dendy to the Colony in 1841. In 1840 Henry Dendy, a farmer in Surrey, England acquired a "Special Survey" from the Commissioners for Land and Emigration which gave Dendy the right to choose land in Port Phillip for the "bargain basement" price of only £1 per acre for 5120 acres, (an area of 8 square miles). The Special Survey also included the right to "the shipment of a worker for every £20 spent on land, whose free passage was paid by the Crown, equalling a total of 100 workers ". Accordingly Dendy sold his English holdings and paid the required £5120 and arrived in Melbourne in February 1841. However by this time land in the new colony was selling for £5 - £40 per acre. Because Henry Dendy possessed the order from the Colonial Office in London he was able to successfully oppose Super-intendant LaTrobe's attempts to alter the price of the land. Dendy appointed Jonathan Were, (an entrepreneur, who had arrived in 1839), as his Manager and who later became a partner. Together, Dendy and Were decided on an area 5 miles south from Melbourne, bounded by North Road, East Boundary Road, South Road and to the west by Port Phillip Bay. Were and Dendy pitched their tents in the area now known as ' Park St, Brighton' and sank a well near the corner of 'St Andrew's St and Wells St'. By 1845 J.B Were and Company had bought almost half of Dendy's land and Were built himself "Moorabbin House" in Were St Brighton made from stone, quarried from local cliffs. It was still standing in 1924. Legend records Moorabbin is named after the Aboriginal word for ' Mother's Milk ' The soil is very fertile and well supplied with water especially in the area called 'East Brighton' - now known as Bentleigh and East Bentleigh - By 1850 the area had developed with numerous market gardens, dairy farms, fruit gardens and vineyards supplying food for the growing population of Melbourne. In the 1852 Josiah Holloway, a developer, purchased 625 acres from the squatters Richard and John King and sectioned '2 acre allotments' south of Henry Dendy's Brighton Survey along the Arthur's Seat Road ( later Nepean Highway) for sale @ £10 It became known as The Two Acre Village as settlers took up the allotments and established market gardens, general stores, butchers, blacksmiths, post office and 2 hotels. Charles Whorral opened The Cheltenham Inn and it became so popular as a meeting place that the area was called Cheltenham. The early settlers, who were predominantly English and Scottish immigrants initially leased their allotments and, because the sandy soil was so fertile, they were soon able to purchase the land and increase their acreage. This list shows the names of the Pioneer settlers with the amount of Acres, the date purchased from The Crown and the Lot or Portion Number in the Land of the Henry Dendy Special Survey of Brighton 1841, in the County of Bourke , Victoria. The Squatters ,who arrived in the area first, used the land for grazing sheep and cattle. The Squatters had the right to graze unoccupied Crown land for ₤10 per year rental and a per capita payment for animals grazed. They could develop , improve and clear the land for the purpose of the tenancy but ownership was not permitted. When the land became useful The Crown put it on the market and the developers took over whilst the Squatters lost the improved land, dwellings and out buildings, there being no compensation paid. Squatters named John and Thomas Martin 1840-41; Richard and John King 1840- 1854 ; M.N.M.Moysey and M.J.Bickford 1841-1852 ; James McMahon 1846-1853 ; Daniel MacKinnon 1839- 1840. The 5120 Acres of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841were divided into approx. 83 Portions / Lots with varying acreage . Josiah Holloway, a speculator purchased 625 acres of the King Brothers run and re-sectioned the land into 2 acre Lots for Sale as market gardens. A butter churn is a device used to convert cream into butter. This is done through a mechanical process, via a crank used to manually turn a rotating device inside the barrel shaped churn. The agitation of the cream, caused by the mechanical motion of the device, disrupts the milk fat. The membranes that surround the fats are broken down, subsequently forming clumps known as butter grains. These butter grains, during the process of churning, fuse with each other and form larger fat globules. Air bubbles are introduced into these fat globules via the continued mechanical action of the churn. The butter grains become more dense as fat globules attach to them while the air is forced out of the mixture. This process creates a liquid known as buttermilk. With constant churning, the fat globules eventually form solid butter and separate from the buttermilk. The buttermilk is then drained off and the butter is squeezed to eliminate excess liquid and to form it into a solid mass. Then rinsing could be done simply by washing in water, followed by draining, salting and working or "kneading" the butter with a pair of wooden butter pats, or with bare hands. This is a paddle churn, a barrel that contains a paddle, which is operated by a handle. The paddle churned the butter inside the container when the handle was turned. A Vesta case is a small, portable box / safe to carry matches that came into use around the 1830s and was produced extensively between 1890 and 1920. During this period, almost everyone carried strike-anywhere matches, so they could light stoves, lanterns and other devices. Early matches were unreliable and prone to ignite from rubbing on one another or spontaneously. Accordingly, most people carried a match safe / box to house their matches. Edith (Eadie) Florence Box 1890- 1976, was born in East Brighton ( Bentleigh) the 9th child of Francis and Eliza Jane Box. In 1912 she married Jack Samuel Clay a market gardener in South Road, Moorabbin and they had 6 children. They retired to live in Balnarring, Victoria and are buried in Cheltenham Cemetery. Francis Box 1836-1912, was born in Withyham, Sussex and came to Australia with his parents George and Mary Box and siblings in 1856. He was assigned to work in Beaufort and had various jobs including ‘gold miner’ at Heathcote where he married Eliza Jane Thompson 1852-1922. Francis decided to return to market gardening after the death of his 1st child Francis George Box in 1875 aged 13months. The child was buried in Brighton Cemetery and Francis then rent/leased the land on the corner of Tucker Road and Elizabeth Street East Brighton ( now Bentleigh) owned by his brother Henry who with another brother John helped Francis clear the land, and establish a market garden. They had 4 children and began to prosper until in 1882 their 2year old child Lena Caroline Box was killed in a fire that destroyed their house. Francis was burned trying to rescue the child. The local community raised money to assist the family. The land boom brought prosperity again and Francis bought more land around Tucker Road which was bequeathed to his children. Francis and Eliza Jane had four more children but one died in infancy and another aged 2 years. Only 5 of their 9 children survived. Francis and Eliza Jane, who died in 1922, are also buried in Brighton Cemetery Box Cottage Museum, a reconstruction of an early settler hut, is named after the Box family who resided there 1865 -1913 . William Box who with his wife Elizabeth Avis Box and 13 children lived and farmed on the block of land in Jasper Road, East Brighton ( now McKinnon / Ormond) that was part of the Henry Dendy Special Survey 1841 . Francis Box, a brother of William Box, was born in Withyham, Sussex and came to Australia with his parents George and Mary Box and siblings in 1856. Francis established market gardens in Tucker Road Bentleigh. Edith 'Eadie' Florence Box was the 9h child of Francis Box. Inscribed in Album “ The early photos in this album were found by Mr (Laurie) Lewis when he was demolishing the Old Box Cottage. He gave them to Mrs Avis Box Eldridge who in turn gave them to me. They were not identified. I believe they rightly belong in the Cottage. The Royal Winton brand has always been synonymous with quality and design and has roots in Stoke-on-Trent, England that go back over one hundred years. Originally known as Grimwade Brothers it was founded by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade. Leonard had shown a natural talent for modelling pottery and it was in this field that his infant business began, in 1885. He was soon joined in the business by his older brother, Sidney Richard, another potter. The family of Daphne Sturt were early settlers in Moorabbin ShireCirca 1890 to 1900.
