Levey repressed the memories of the event until the fifth birthday of her own daughter, whereupon she underwent depression and marital strife, and had to attend counselling. She repressed the memories again until she was forty, but recalled them a second time upon reading about Robert Keith Knight, whom she realised might have been the perpetrator. Police investigated her case and discerned that the perpetrator was not Knight, but another, deceased, unspecified offender. ... cheltenham railway station moorabbin cheltenham dendy henry dendy's ...After the arrival of the Cheltenham Railyway Station Charman Road became the main shopping centre. From 1 small shop - Mrs Meeres who sold sweets, school requisites and drapery - it proceeded to develop throughout the 1890's with various traders until the 1910 Postcards show many shops on both sides of the road, Stephen Charman, aged 21years, arrived in Melbourne in 1842 as one of Henry Dendy's Emigrants. 1852 he purchased 160 acres for £328 bounded by Charman Rd and Balcome Rd. 'The Spring' was an important water source for the local Aboriginal people and then for the early settlers. Charman's first wife Harriet and their infant child died and in 1850 he married a widow with 5 children, Mary Gettens. Their first home was made of wattle and daub and they had 7 more children. Later a weatherboard cottage was built c 1855 Together they developed a market garden and specialized in marigolds which were sold for medicinal purposes to the Melbourne Chemists - Martin & Pleasance . The first Methodist Church Services were held at Spring Grove and the Charmans donated land in 1857 for the first Chapel, Cemetery and Primary School . Mary died 1870 and Stephen married again and moved to Gippsland where he died aged 85 in 1906 Stephen and Mary Charman were pioneer market gardeners in Moorabbin Shire 1842 and were involved in the development of Church, school and community in the area now called Cheltenham. Her cousin Graeme (centre) and younger brother Alfred (right) are with her. Moorabbin is a suburb in the City of Kingston that was originally established as a rural market gardening communityThe Marriott property in Moorabbin was adjacent to a secret wartime wireless receiving station established in March 1942 in Chesterville Road, Moorabbin. The station was established on requisitioned market garden properties, and soon housed WRAN (Women's Royal Australian Navy) personnel and up to 35 US Navy servicemen. The Navy personnel intercepted Japanese coded communications and then despatched these by motorbike messenger to Queens Road, St Kilda where the Directorate of Naval Communications and the code-breaking unit called FRUMEL (Fleet Radio Unit - Melbourne) were housed. The information intercepted by the wireless receiving station helped shape the Allied response to Japan's advances in the Pacific. Declassified defence records show that this unprepossessing station handled some of World War II's most sensitive secrets, however the local community were unaware of its significance. Gladys Marriott, working on her father's property, would regularly take the family's cows to graze in the fields adjoining the station with no concept of what the Navy personnel were doing. Smith Pty Ltd, Highett Railway Station, Moorabbin, Victoria ...From the 1860s, colonists in the Moorabbin district discovered tomato growing was very successful. Tomatoes and tomato products from the Moorabbin District won prizes as far afield as NZ., London, Philadelphia, Amsterdam, India as well as in Melbourne. Two particularly successful growers were Henry Comport of Cheltenham, and Edward Zorn at Clayton. As a result of this extensive tomato growing many factories 'sprang up' in the Moorabbin district to process the produce, one of which was the "Tom Smith Pty Ltd" factory. An Advertisement on the 29th August c1912, in the Brighton Southern Cross newspaper for Tom Smith's Tomato Sauce states that it is - "Superior. From absolutely Pure Locally Grown Tomatoes. Put up in our own bottles. A High-Grade Article. Manufactured at Highett Railway Station. Smith & Lambert Manufacturers" Phone Cheltenham 206.This item is significant because it relates to the prize-winning major industry of tomato growing that the Moorabbin colonist market gardeners commenced in the 1860s. Many tomato processing factories also sprang up in the district at that time. Because the tomato industry was virtually wiped out by a virus that attacked the plants in the very early 1900s very few tangible artefacts now remain that relate to what was once an important industry.A clear glass machine-made tomato sauce bottle. The neck of the bottle indicates that the contents were originally sealed with a cork at the top. The glass appears to be of poor quality as air bubbles are evident and was moulded, not hand-blown. The bottle is embossed on the front with the manufacturer's name, and location. The file also includes four pages of handwritten, undated and unattributed working notes with property description, calculations and a rough plan (96mm x 94mm) of the ground floor of the building for the valuation. Also included in the file is a two page duplicate copy of a typed letter, dated 08/10/1970 from W V Scott to William and Lasica Co Solicitors containing the valuation of the relevant property and rental details. The file also includes a one page photocopy of a handwritten document dated 15/11/1967. It gives details of a previous mortgage. File contains 3 items: 1/Original handwritten notes by Leo J Harrington (VR Melbourne) and T O’Callaghan titled ‘Victorian Railways to ‘62’. Notes include dates of electrification of lines, station openings, valuations, railway station names and their origins. Reference to council minutes regarding request to change the name of Elsternwick station to Caulfield in June 1871. 2/Original newspaper article from ‘The Age’ dated 10/06/1978 by Graeme Davidson titled ‘A case study of Railway politics’. Article refers to a publication called ‘Return to Rosstown, Railway, Land Sales and Sugar Beet ventures in Caulfield’ by D. F. ‘Return to Rosstown’ recounts the story of the Rosstown Junction railway and its creator, William Murray Ross. Tells of Ross’ life since coming to Australia from Liverpool and how he prospered as a land speculator owning large tracts of land in Caulfield, the sugar mill and his plans to operate a railway. 3/Original newspaper article (and image) from ‘Moorabbin Standard’ dated 25/11/1981, titled ‘Centenary train to carry mayors’. Article reports that a special train will run from Spencer Street Station to Mordialloc railway Station on Saturday 19/12/1981 to celebrate the centenary of the railway line to Mordialloc. Story mentions that in 1881, the Caulfield to Mordialloc line was a single track and that passengers can also board the special train at Caulfield Station. This is Vol. 8 of the Moorabbin Mirror produced by CMHS members Fran & Holger Bader , Valma Sharp November 2016 The Moorabbin Mirror reflects the history and heritage of the former City of Moorabbin — derived from Mooroobin, ‘a resting place’ in the Bunurrung spoken language. In 1994, the City of Moorabbin was integrated into the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Kingston and Monash. Dr.Rosalie Triolo will give a talk for members on Nov. 27th about Local School Teachers in the 1st AIF CMHS AGM Oct 30th. Mrs Valma Sharp retired from Committee and CMHS The Committee proposed a vote of thanks in appreciation of Valma's long , loyal service to CMHS,Box Cottage Museum . Subscriptions for NEW members will be $15 from January 2017. Next AGM will be July 30th 2017 to coincide with the end of the financial year. Due to the cost of ink and postage the CMHS Newsletter Moorabbin Mirror will be available in pdf via email, CMHS website and Victorian Collections website . Local Libraries can assist members to read and or download a copy. GECC and KCC are respectively supporting CMHS/BCM with Community Grants 2016 for utilities and the purchase of laptop, scanner printer copier for the CMHS Original Newsletter Preservation project. The BCM / CMHS joined Glen Eira HS and Brighton Cemetorians for a Heritage Display at GECC Town Hall Gallery Annexe Nov 3rd - 20th. An article about Robert Haddon 1866-1929, architect. The Adelphi Players 'Robinson Crusoe' Dec 3-11 2016, The BCM 'August Rietman Exhibition 2017' is proceeding with guidance from the MAV Roving Curator. Fran Bader, Project Manager, is seeking images, pressed concrete products,information,and recollections. Also any jewellery by Stefanie Rennick (nee Rietman) who was a teacher at Bentleigh Secondary College. CMHS members attended the Opening of the new Bentleigh Railway Station Nov 12th.
