This book was produced as part of a raft of community projects under the umbrella of COWCH (City of Whitehorse Community Houses) with funding from the federal government. Projects aimed to celebrate the Centenary of Federation by recording a broad base of aspects of life and experience in Whitehorse drawn from a cross-section of ordinary members of the community. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. 63 and 117 Murray Street houses are extant (Google maps image capture Dec 2018).Victorian Heritage Database - HO131 63 Murray Street Caulfield https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/35569 (as of 14/08/2021) "Marston" at no. 63 Murray Street, Caulfield South, was built by J.E. Guest, a contractor resident in nearby Downshire Road, in 1889-90, presumably as a speculative venture together with the extant house at adjoining No.61. It is aesthetically significant. It is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) as an exceptionally richly ornamented medium sized Boom period villa in Caulfield South, being unusual in this respect in its locale and comparing with nearby "Sprouston" at 19 Blanche Street (1887). It is believed that the C. Lim Kee who was paying these rates was Charles Lim Kee. According to the Rutherglen Sun September 11, 1896 he was starting a business known as the Cash Bakery in premises previously occupied by Conrad Huhs. In 1903 he moved to new premises next to the Bank of Victoria. By 1908 he had a shop and rooms in Main Street, and houses in Wallace Street and Murray Street. Part of a collection of business documents found under the floor of a building in Main Street when it was being renovated. At that time the owner was Don Chambers, and the premises was occupied as the Chambers Riteway Supermarket. The location (134 Main Street) is currently (2022) occupied by Miegel’s Pharmacy Rutherglen. Receipt from Rutherglen Waterworks Trust for water rates for a house in Murray Street. The form is printed on paper with hand written details reproduced with carbon paper.,"Rutherglen Waterworks Trust, No. of service 278. [receipt no.]: 605. Rutherglen, August 14th 1914. Received from Mr C. Lim Kee the sum of --- Pounds twelve Shillings and --- Pence, being Water Rate on a House or Land situate in house, Murray Street Rutherglen Urban Waterworks District. Murray Comrie Collection. The house in this photo was once the residence of the Tarnagulla police officer. The town block where the house was originally built was the base for policing in Tarnagulla from 1878 until the 1990s. The house was built in 1878 as a residence and adjacent was a lockup, office and stable (shown in THA-2019.0031). This house was sold for removal in in the late 1960s and replaced with a prefabricated residence and small office brought from Bealiba. These as well as the lockup are still in place (as of 2019), but are no longer used. It is not known where this house was moved to. It is not known whether this photo was taken before or after the house was moved. Monochrome photograph of a house which was once the police residence in Tarnagulla. Murray Comrie Collection. The house in this photo was the residence of the town police officer. The town block where the house was located was the base for policing in Tarnagulla from 1878 until the 1990s. At the time of this photo (1924), the father of these children, Angus Comrie Snr was the constable for Tarnagulla. Adjacent to this house was a lockup, office and stable (shown in THA-2019.0031). Behind the residence and outbuildings (in background of this photo) was an adjoining paddock for the police horses. This house was sold for removal in in the 1960s and replaced with a prefabricated residence and small office from Bealiba. These as well as the lockup are still in place (as of 2019), but are no longer used. There are now private residences built on the former police horse paddock. A later image of this house is THA-2019.0032. For almost 100 years the Comrie name has been involved with the Victoria Police. Angus Comrie Snr, joined the force in 1899 and served as constable in Kaniva and Avoca and then in Tarnagulla from late 1909 until 1927. His son Murray Comrie, born in Tarnagulla in 1912 also became a policeman and later a Chief Superintendent, retiring in 1972 and passing away in 1983 after a long illness. Murray Comrie's son Murray Jnr., to avoid confusion became known by his middle name, Neil. Neil Comrie also joined Victoria Police and rose through the ranks to become Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1993 to 2001. The Murray Comrie Collection held by Tarnagulla History Archive was collated in the 1970s by Murray Comrie (1912-1983). The Bridge Hotel was built by Henry Hopwood to house visitors to the town crossing the Murray River on his punt crossing, which was situated just below the Bridge Hotel on the Murray River. The accommodation was spacious and grand! In the right back corner of the photograph, the 'lantern' roof of the St Georges Hall can be seen. The street is level with the front entrance to the Hotel, which is very different to what it is today.The photograph shows hotel activities and accommodation in the late 19th Century.A black and white photograph of the Bridge Hotel taken from the Hopwood Gardens. The photograph shows four silky oak trees growing along the front of the building. There is an empty flag pole outside the front of the building.
