Summary
The subject book is not by Merivale alone. It was begun by Sir Herbert Edwardes, who died in 1868, and finished by Herman Merivale. The work is a biography of Sir Henry Lawrence (1806–1857), a Bengal Army officer and administrator. Lawrence was born in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka). There he led the group of officials in the Punjab known as his 'Young Men', he also founded the Lawrence Military Asylums, and died at the siege of Lucknow in 1857. The book follows his career through the Sikh wars, the Punjab Board of Administration, his clash with Lord Dalhousie, his time in Rajputana and his final posting in Oudh.
