These photographs were taken by The Advocate in 1991 and feature a brothel located in Cramer Street, Sunshine North. The Cromer Street, Sunshine North brothel (the licensed premises on the industrial estate of Cramer Street, near McIntyre Road) appears in council and licensing records from the mid‑1990s, with formal Victorian licensing occurring after the Sex Work Act 1994 came into force. Because brothel licensing in Victoria only became legal and regulated from 1994 onward, these photographs of 1991, the brothel must therefore must have been operating as an unlicensed brothel.Brothels become contentious when they are proposed or established because they sit at the intersection of planning, morality, neighbourhood identity, and public safety. Even when legal and regulated, they trigger multiple layers of concern in communities, councils, and media.6823.01 - Brothel Cromer Avenue Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 327.2).JPG 6823.02 - Brothel Cromer Avenue Sunshine North 1991 Photographs (Advocate 327.2).JPGsunshine north, cromer avenue

North Kew, now divided between Kew and Kew East, bordered the Yarra River. As such, it was a region subject to flooding in the Yarra Valley. Development beyond this point (ie Kellett Grove) was limited by the City of Kew's planning regulations. Prior to urban development, the area since European settlement and the first land sales in the district in the 1840s, had been used for dairy farming. Vivid photograph contrasting domestic life and relationships with natural disasters such as the flood of 1934.Small sepia snapshot of two submerged houses belonging to local families in River Avenue, North Kew, during the 1934 floods. These photographs, taken by The Advocate in 2000, document a light industrial precinct in Sunshine North during a period of concern among local traders and landowners. The images show an area characterised by vacant industrial lots and widespread illegal dumping. Businesses operating within the estate called for improvements to basic infrastructure, pointing to unsealed roads, no reticulated sewage, and environmental management issues that they believed were hindering the precinct’s development. These photographs are significant as documentary evidence of the challenges facing industrial development in Sunshine North at the turn of the 21st century. They record the physical condition of a light industrial estate that was characterised by vacant allotments, illegal dumping, unsealed roads, and limited essential infrastructure. The images illustrate the environmental and planning issues affecting the precinct and provide insight into concerns raised by local business owners regarding council investment and urban management.7759.01 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPG 7759.02 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPG 7759.03 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPG 7759.04 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPG 7759.05 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPG 7759.06 - Auburn Avenue Sunshine North Rubbish 2000 Photographs (Advocate 295).JPGauburn avenue, sunshine north

The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.A hand-drawn subdivision plan listing six blocks bounded by Houghton Street, Doncaster Road, Buchanan Avenue and Maud Street, North Balwyn. Written on the plan of subdivision are the lot numbers, the dimensions of the blocks and the price at which two lots were for sale or had been sold for.subdivision plans - balwyn
