... Nurse Training...Lister House...history...nurse training in the 1960s after several failed attempts.Nurses' Week, started in 1952 by Miss Williams, aimed to promote nursing careers and community awareness. The school was instrumental in raising nursing education standards in the region for nearly forty years. Staff Nurses received additional training in administration after their basic three-year course. There were aspirations for postgraduate opportunities in rural areas, but country students continued to face challenges compared to their metropolitan counterparts. Nurse Training Lister House history ...The Northern District School of Nursing in Victoria, Australia Graduates Association: Historical overview of the Northern District School of Nursing: After World War Two, Australian hospitals, especially in rural areas, faced a severe shortage of nurses due to low interest and challenging working conditions. Nurses endured strict discipline, poor wages, long hours, and restrictive living arrangements. The Hospital & Charities Commission appointed Miss Gwen Williams as the first Executive Officer of Nursing Services, who played a pivotal role in founding the regional training school at 'Lister House' in Bendigo in March 1950. Bendigo was selected for a pilot scheme to improve the correlation between theoretical and practical nurse training. The school staff worked to standardize training across regional hospitals and ensure students gained practical experience after theoretical instruction. A circular training scheme was introduced, allowing students from smaller hospitals to rotate through base hospitals for broader experience. Over time, affiliated hospitals changed as some de-registered and others joined. Founding staff, Miss Nancy Long and Miss Margot Scott, set high educational and professional standards, acting as educators, supervisors, and mentors.Training combined theory with hands-on practice, including procedures, instrument handling, and patient care. In 1973, the school began admitting students not attached to any specific hospital, allocating them to wards after study blocks to better align practice with theory. The Victorian Nursing Council later required the school to control clinical rotations. Male students were finally admitted to general nurse training in the 1960s after several failed attempts.Nurses' Week, started in 1952 by Miss Williams, aimed to promote nursing careers and community awareness. Cataloguing and recording of all NDSN memorabilia has begun.Various organizations and individuals have been contacted to support preservation. The importance of NDSN in nursing history is emphasized, highlighting the need for preservation for future generations and researchers. Inventory of equipment is completed; cataloguing is ongoing. All records (student files, correspondence, minute books) should be kept intact and organized. Proper storage and insurance are necessary to prevent deterioration. A suitable display area is needed, with regular updates as per museum standards. Bendigo currently lacks a museum; converting Lister House would provide a permanent home for NDSN memorabilia and other local artifacts. Lister House's central location makes it a practical choice. The Association has contacted the Bendigo City Council for feedback on this proposal. Temporary storage has been offered, but a permanent solution is urgently needed to prevent loss or damage. There is concern about the memorabilia being split up or placed in inaccessible archives. The Association, comprised of trained nurses without curatorial expertise, seeks assistance and support for the museum proposal. They request an opportunity to discuss the matter with the Committee of Management.Northern District School of Nursing Graduates Association - History and Archives - Letter from Joan O'Shea (President) to Mr Humhreys or Mr McKean re Lister House as a possible museum This item contains the following document: 3792.8a Letter from Joan O'Shea (President) to Mr Humhreys or Mr McKean re Lister House as a possible museum - 2 typed sheetsnurse training, lister house, history, joan o'shea -

The School Badge has been updated to include a red surround and the full school name. Nurse Training ...The Northern District School of Nursing in Victoria, Australia: The Association was formed after a survey at the Lister House 25th Anniversary, showing sufficient interest among graduates. A committee was established in November 1975 to organize activities and maintain connections among graduates. Reunions are scheduled every five years to avoid conflicts with other hospital groups, with the next planned for April 1980. Membership is open to those who trained at the Northern District School of Nursing, associated hospitals, and transfer students who completed their training there. Annual subscription is $1.00, payable before each reunion, with pro-rata rates for those joining between reunions. Previously, newsletters were sent to all known graduates, but this was costly and inefficient. The School now publishes a magazine with a section for Association news, sent twice a year to financial members. Membership is steadily increasing, but many graduates have not yet been contacted. The Association welcomes new names and addresses to expand its reach. Key members are designated in various districts (e.g., East Brighton, Castlemaine, Echuca, Bendigo, Swan Hill, Mildura) to facilitate local engagement. Additional InformationGraduates are encouraged to update their contact information if they move. The history book "Lister House" by Frank Cusack is available for purchase. School 108 was the last after almost 40 years of nurse training. All general nurse training in the region will now be conducted in colleges instead of at NDSN. The school began in 1950 at Lister House, a historic mansion in Bendigo. It was certified as a training school for registered nurses in 1951, working with several regional hospitals. Initially, NDSN collaborated with hospitals in Castlemaine, Kyneton, Bendigo, Mildura, Swan Hill, Echuca, St. Arnaud, Dunolly, and Ouyen. Over time, some hospital affiliations changed, with trainees from smaller hospitals gaining clinical experience at larger base hospitals in Bendigo and Mildura. All students attended Lister House for study blocks during their three-year training. The school was known for its highly trained and experienced tutors.Staff numbers dwindled as the school closed, with tutors moving to other jobs, hospitals, or early retirement. The last tutor to leave was Mary Ryan, who had been at Lister House for over 10 years. The school, once lively, is now described as silent and empty, likened to a 'morgue.'Former students and staff find the emptiness unsettling, highlighting the emotional impact of the closure. Despite the sadness, staff members emphasize the school's positive environment and achievements. The assistant dean notes high retention and pass rates, indicating strong academic performance. Over the years, significant renovations were made, including the construction of a new hall.Staff express pride in these improvements and the school's development. The School of Nursing in Bendigo has a rich history, remembered fondly by many Victorians who trained there.Staff, such as Mary, found it rewarding when former students returned to share their career progress and experiences. Anecdotes include students reaching out for support, such as requesting references to secure jobs while traveling. Graduation balls ('grad balls') were a significant tradition, known for their fun, themed events and memorable costumes. Themes ranged from 'Your fantasy' to 'Wear something you've never dared to wear before.'The final grad ball for School 108 is scheduled with the theme 'The wake,' marking the end of an era. The NDSN building currently stands empty, with its future undecided.A feasibility study is underway to consider repurposing the building, possibly for a government department such as the Health Department.Other groups have shown interest, but the final decision will be made by the Health Minister, Caroline Hogg.Northern District School of Nursing Graduates Association - Article "They will nurse fond memories of their school" from the Midland Express Tues 18 July 1988 by Linda Harrow Page 14 This item contains the following document: 3792.9a From the article black and white photo of Lister House 3792.9b Part of the Article "They will nurse fond memories of their school" from the Midland Express 3792.9c From the article black and white photo of the first group of general nurses ever to be trained at the Northern District School of Nursing 3792.9d Part of the Article "They will nurse fond memories of their school" from the Midland Express 3792.9e Part of the Article "They will nurse fond memories of their school" from the Midland Expressnurse training, lister house, history, mary ryan -

... nurse training, Mayday Hills suffered from a lack of resources and rudimentary facilities and patients frequently suffered from the cold due to poor heating and inadequate clothing and bedding. However, as the twentieth century progressed, Sheila recalls how conditions and treatments improved as a result of increased government funding of services and advances in psychiatry and pharmaceutical medicine. Mrs Sheila Parkinson's oral history ...Mrs Sheila Parkinson was born in Wagga in 1916 and came to Beechworth as a young woman around 1938. Sheila trained as a psychiatric nurse at Mayday Hills hospital prior to the second World War. At that time, unmarried women were accommodated and received nursing training on-site. Shiela was obliged to cease professional training and employment when she married in 1941, which disrupted completion of her final nursing examinations. Following post-war changes to the law that allowed married women to work, Sheila returned to Mayday Hills. Sheila's husband, Don, returned to Beechworth after four years abroad as a serviceman in the Australian Air Force. Beechworth's institutions were a major source of local employment throughout the twentieth century. As well as providing limited employment opportunities to young women like Shiela, post-war European migrants from Bonegilla Migrant camp found at Mayday Hills, encouraging European migrant settlement in the district. Mayday Hills was renamed several times since its establishment in 1867. At the peak of operations, it comprised sixty-seven buildings housing over twelve hundred patients patients and five hundred staff. The hospital officially closed in 1998. Today, the decommissioned two-storey Italianate style main building stands on eleven hectares of botanical gardens under National Trust protection. The site remains a popular cultural heritage destination for visitors. This oral history recording was part of a project conducted by Jennifer Williams in the year 2000 to capture the everyday life and struggles in Beechworth during the twentieth century. This project involved recording seventy oral histories on cassette tapes of local Beechworth residents which were then published in a book titled: Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth century Beechworth. The cassette tapes were digitised in July 2021 with funds made available by the Friends of the Burke.Employed as a psychiatric nurse at one of Beechworth's large welfare institutions, Mayday Hills, Mrs Sheila Parkinson recalls the conditions faced by staff and patients at the hospital, which cared for chronically ill people from the Ovens region and patients from the Yarra Bend Asylum, Melbourne, which closed in 1925. When Sheila first began her nurse training, Mayday Hills suffered from a lack of resources and rudimentary facilities and patients frequently suffered from the cold due to poor heating and inadequate clothing and bedding. However, as the twentieth century progressed, Sheila recalls how conditions and treatments improved as a result of increased government funding of services and advances in psychiatry and pharmaceutical medicine. Mrs Sheila Parkinson's oral history recording is historically and socially significant for its witness to life in Beechworth in the pre- and post-WWII period. Sheila's story enriches our understanding of processes of modernisation with regard to psychiatric and welfare services, while the course of Sheila's professional training and employment brings attention to systemic and socio-economic barriers faced by women, as well as the valuable contribution women and migrants make in the delivery of care and ancillary services. This oral history account is socially and historically significant as it is a part of a broader collection of interviews conducted by Jennifer Williams which were published in the book 'Listen to what they say: voices of twentieth-century Beechworth.' While the township of Beechworth is known for its history as a gold rush town, these accounts provide a unique insight into the day-to-day life of the town's residents during the twentieth century, many of which would have been lost if they had not been preserved. This is a digital copy of a recording that was originally captured on a cassette tape. The cassette tape is black with a horizontal white strip and is currently stored in a clear flat plastic rectangular container. It holds up 40 minutes of recordings on each side.Mrs Sheila Parkinson /twentieth century beechworth, mayday hills, psychiatric care, benevolent asylums, nursing, wwii, psychiatric treatment, country women, psychiatric hostpital, beechworth's institutions, local employment, government institutions, listen to what they say, oral history, burke museum, sheila parkinson, beechworth lunatic asylum, beechworth mental hospital, beechworth hospital for the insane, the kerferd clinic, bonegilla migrant camp, working women, white australia policy -

In the background, the two-storey building is in view, along with the covered walkway. The institution had to operate with serious shortage of female nurses for long periods of time. During the 1880s, small houses (cottages) were built to offer accommodation for the nurses living in the hospital and in 1937 began the construction of a nurses` hostel. In 1962 the upper level of the Nurses` Home was converted into a Nurses` Training School. The Mayday Hills Hospital was constructed between 1864 and 1867, with buildings created in a number of periods. It formally opened on 24 October 1867 and, along with the Ovens Hospital and the Benevolent Asylum, made Beechworth a prominent social welfare centre in Victoria. The need for an institution of this kind was arisen due to the increased number of people with mental disturbances (induced by the harsh living conditions on the goldfields) and the remoteness of the district from Melbourne. The two-storey buildings, designed in Italianate style, and the three-storey towers at the front, were influenced by the asylum at Colney Hatch in England. Large masses of granite were excavated for its foundation and around 250 workmen were employed for its construction. The building, divided into six sections, was comprised of dormitories, doctors` rooms and plenty ancillary rooms and facilities, such as laundries, reading rooms, a concert hall and cooking areas. The site was chosen for its panoramic view of the countryside, the hilltop atmosphere and the native fauna, all contributing to the cure of patients. The Hospital was originally named the “Ovens Lunatic Asylum” but, during the centenary celebrations in 1967, the name was officially changed to “Mayday Hills Hospital”, showing the gradual shift in the perception and understanding of mental health conditions over the last decades. The Hospital lies on the traditional land of the Kulin Nation. This photograph is historically significant as it provides an insight into the everyday life of staff living within the walls of the Mayday Hills Hospital. It also offers important information about the location and the exterior of the Hospital and contributes to the understanding of the district`s development and its importance to the course of Victoria`s history.Black and white rectangular photograph printed on paper unframed.Reverse: 3445/mental hospital, beechworth, fern house, female nurses, nurses` home, nurses` training school, nurses` hostel, mayday hills hospital, ovens hospital, colney hatch, two-storey buildings, italianate style, benevolent asylum, ovens lunatic asylum, kulin nation, workmen, covered walkway, granite, hilltop atmosphere, mental health -
