Georeg was the Son of Alex King 20 Errard St N; brother of Jean and Alex; Prev IV Grade Pleasant St State School. It is possible the cigarette case was a gift or memento from the Old Collegians Association. The case was donated to the school by his niece Jan Millar in 2010. The War Memorial Appeal Committee of the Ballarat College Old Collegians' Association scheme for a memorial to Old Boys who gave their lives in the service of their country during the Second World War. The Veterans Plate trophy was awarded at the Annual Sports Day. Thomas Anderson (BD 30/06/1886) entered Ballarat College in 1903 as a 17yo. He was the son of J W T Anderson of Waubra and had previously attended Waubra SS VI Class. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. The invoice issued by Clarendon ladies College details the sundry expenses of a girl's boarding education in 1905, including tuition and boarding fees, books & music and disbursements. The invoice is socially and historically significant because it provides comment on the economics of education in the early 1900's. It is obvious from written records and the inscriptions on the cups themselves that two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup.The Old Collegians Cup was a prestigious award presented in the early days of Ballarat College for private retention. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. His plaque in No 2041 in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. A very high achiever John was Dux of College 1919 School Captain 1920 Captain of Cricket 1920, Captain of Tennis 1918 – 1920 Captain of Athletics and Football 1919 – 1920 Stroke, Rowing Firsts, 1919-1920. He maintained a long association with the school through participation in the Old Collegians Association. The match box may have been an Old Collegian's memento. John married Elvie (Price) Coltman. Elvie entered Clarendon Ladies College 1919, her childhood home ‘Dumbarton’ 1425 Sturt Street was purchased by the school and is part of the Girls Boarding House. Henry Youle Hind (10/11/1894 - 15/05/1979), son of Henry Dalzell Hind and Alice Louise nee Evans, Victoria Ave, Ballarat. He entered the school in 1910 as a 16yo (peer year 1912). The Senior Cup was a prestigious award for the winning athlete at the Ballarat College annual sports program. This particular trophy was returned to the school and used as a House competition Cup in the Senior Boys Boarding House during the 1980s. After 1980 the trophy was removed from the Boarding House by persons unknown but returned during the 1990s. After repair in 2003 the Senior Boys Boarding House used it as a perpetual Trophy until 2005. The Hind family contacted the school and requested a photograph of the trophy in 2005.
