John Hastie Engineer and millwright John Hastie opened small manufacturing works in Greenock in 1845 and 1853 patented the first self-holding steering gear. The firm became known as John, Hastie and Co. Ltd. in 1898 after taking on limited liability status and their main works were at Kilblain Street, Greenock, where they specialised in ships' steering gear. The company also occupied works at Rue End Street, Greenock. Plans of this unit depict a stockyard to the east, with areas for welding; fitting and assembly; flame, cutting and fabrication; and a machine bay. The company was dissolved in 1991. Brown Brothers Brown Bros Rosebank Ironworks made the steering gears for many large ship's, including The Titanic. Andrew Betts Brown the founder was born in 1741 and closely associated with many improvements in marine engineering. He was educated in his native city and served his apprenticeship as an engineer in the locomotive works of the North British Railway Company at St. Margaret's. During his apprenticeship, he attended the evening classes at Watt College. subsequently going to Manchester to study chemistry. He went to London around 1863 and took over an old brewery, which he converted into an engineering works. During his time there he invented an overhead travelling crane, which was used on the construction of Blackfriars Bridge London. He went on to develop plant which used steam and hydraulic power for discharging ships as a result the company was contracted to install this equipment in Hamburg Docks. ​ By around 1870 he continued to construct machinery in London but realised that conditions were more favourable in Edinburgh. He acquired land at Rosebank adjoining the North British Railway Company's line to Granton, and the necessary infrastructure was completed allowing him to finish the Hamburg contract. The works at Rosebank were eventually extended and added to until they became one of the largest engineering works in the East of Scotland. ​ Mr Brown was a member of numerous engineering institutions, the best known at the time being the Institution of Naval Architects. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, a member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers and of the Institution of Marine Engineers he died in 1906 at the age of 67.An item made by two marine innovators of marine auxiliary machinery, equipment and itemsShip's wheel, brass, attached to brass pillar. This padlock has been salvaged from the wrecked sailing ship SCHOMBERG. It is not known whether the padlock was a part of the ship’s equipment or if it was among personal effects or cargo. At some point in time the padlock has been mounted and sealed in resin, perhaps for both display and preservation purposes. ABOUT THE SCHOMBERG When SCHOMBERG was launched in 1855, she was considered the “Noblest ship that ever floated on water.” SCHOMBERG’s owners, the Black Ball Line, commissioned the ship for their fleet of passenger liners. She was built by Alexander Hall of Aberdeen. Overall, she had accommodation for 1000 passengers. SCHOMBERG’s 34-year-old master, Captain ‘Bully’ Forbes (James Nicol Forbes) was born in Aberdeen in 1821 and rose to fame with his record-breaking voyages on the famous Black Ball Line ships, MARCO POLO and LIGHTNING. On this, the SCHOMBERG’s maiden voyage, he was going to break records. SCHOMBERG departed Liverpool on 6 October 1855, flying the sign “Sixty Days to Melbourne”. She carried 430 passengers and 3000 tons of cargo, including iron rails and equipment intended to build the Melbourne to Geelong Railway and a bridge over the Yarra from Melbourne to Hawthorn. She also carried a cow for fresh milk, pens for fowls and pigs, 90,000 gallons of water for washing and drinking, 17,000 letters and 31,800 newspapers. The ship and cargo were insured for $300,000, a fortune for the time. The winds were poor as she sailed across the equator, slowing SCHOMBERG’s journey considerably. Land was first sighted on Christmas Day, at Cape Bridgewater near Portland, and Captain Forbes followed the coastline towards Melbourne. Forbes was said to be playing cards when called by the Third Mate Henry Keen, who reported land about 3 miles off, Due in large part to the captain's regarding a card game as more important than his ship, it eventually ran aground on a sand spit near Curdie's Inlet (about 56 km west of Cape Otway) on 26 December 1855, 78 days after leaving Liverpool. The sand spit and the currents were not marked on Forbes’s map. The crew from the scouting party advised Forbes to wait until morning before trying to take the passengers to safety in the lifeboats because the rough seas could easily overturn the small vessels. The ship’s Chief Officer spotted SS QUEEN at dawn and signalled the steamer. The master of the SS QUEEN approached the stranded vessel, and all of SCHOMBERG’s passengers and crew were able to disembark safely. The SCHOMBERG was lost and with her, Forbes’ reputation. The Black Ball Line’s Melbourne agent sent a steamer to retrieve the passengers’ baggage from the SCHOMBERG. Other steamers helped unload her cargo until the weather changed and prevented the salvage teams from accessing the ship. Later, one plunderer found a case of Wellington boots, but alas, all were for the left foot! Local merchants Manifold & Bostock bought the wreck and cargo, but did not attempt to salvage the cargo that was still on board the ship. They eventually sold it on to a Melbourne businessman and two seafarers. In 1864, after two of the men drowned when they tried to reach SCHOMBERG, salvage efforts were abandoned. Parts of the SCHOMBERG were washed ashore on the South Island of New Zealand in 1870, nearly 15 years after the wreck. The wreck now lies in almost 9 metres of water, and the shape of the ship can still be seen due to the remaining railway irons, girders and the ship’s frame. A variety of goods and materials can be seen scattered about nearby. Flagstaff Hill holds many items salvaged from the SCHOMBERG, including a ciborium (in which a diamond ring was concealed), communion set, ship fittings and equipment, personal effects, a lithograph, tickets, a menu and a photograph from the SCHOMBERG. This brass padlock is registered as an artefact in the SCHOMBERG collection. The SCHOMBERG collection as a whole is of historical and archaeological significance at a State level, listed on the Victorian Hertage Register VHR S612. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from the SCHOMBERG is significant for its association with the Victorian Heritage Registered shipwreck. The collection is primarily significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the SCHOMBERG. The SCHOMBERG collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of an international passenger ship. The shipwreck collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the shipwreck and the ship, which was designed to be fastest and most luxurious of its day. The SCHOMBERG collection meets the following criteria for assessment: Criterion A: Importance to the course, or pattern, of Victoria’s cultural history. Criterion B: Possession of uncommon, rare or endangered aspects of Victoria’s cultural history. Criterion C: Potential to yield information that will contribute to an understanding of Victoria’s cultural Brass Padlock lying in a wooden block and encased in resin. The wood encasing the padlock has seven man-made holes in it, perhaps used to hand as a display. There was a paper label with an inscription on the top and bottom of the wood immediately surrounding the padlock. the brass has tarnished. Volume 3 specifically contains all the major public acts running from P to W. Because it covers the tail end of the alphabet, it holds some of the most critical laws that built day-to-day society in 19th-century Victoria. A new bridge over the Snowy River at Orbost was opened for traffic on June 20th 1922. It was designed for future joint use by road and railway traffic, but it was only used for road traffic. During the last few years the condition of an old suspension bridge [the 1893 bridge] which was the only vehicular crossing between the town of Orbost and the railway station, caused much concern. The structure was of timber, except for the wire suspension cables of its central span of about 100 feet. A design was prepared in 1914 for a permanent bridge with five spans of 85 feet composed of plate girders on concrete piers. With great increase in the price of steel work during the war, the cost of this design became prohibitive, and the need for a new structure becoming urgent, alternative proposals were investigated. As a result the present design was adopted as providing a sem-permanent bridge at moderate cost. The new bridge spans the river about 160 feet upstream from the old bridge on a slight skew, the piers being at an angle of 80 degrees with the centre line of the bridge. It has a camber of about 2 feet 5 inches in its total length of 527 feet. ( information from Newsletter March 2014 - Lois Crisp) The photograph shows Mrs James Cameron cutting the ribbon at the opening of the Orbost Pile Bridge in 1922. This second bridge, was built by the Victorian Railways and the Country Roads Board. Constructed at a cost of 35,000 pounds and used second-hand girders from the Flinders Street- Spencer Street viaduct. On July 4 1922 it was officially opened by Mrs James Cameron. Unfortunately, her husband, who had long championed the building of the bridge so that it would be ready for the railway to continue to the border, was too ill to attend the ceremony. In fact, James Cameron died on July 13 after a long and severe illness (ref. S.R.M. 20.7.1922). There is a section of this ribbon in the collection - Registration No. 366. He came from a family who were early pioneers of Ringwood. he was born in Collingwood but schooled in Ringwood, married and brought up his family in Ringwood. He lived at 18, Wantirna Road .The article was contributed by J.K.McCaskill, JP. a mayor of Ringwood in the years between 1924-1951.Transcript: "The death occurred of Joseph Richard Sanders, 18 Wantirna Rd, Ringwood, on Wednesday, 21st October 1959, in his 87th year, marks the passing of another of Ringwood’s early pioneers. He was born in Collingwood in August 1873 and came to Ringwood with his parents when 15 months old. They made their home on land on what is now known as Jubilee Park (Fuller particulars of this Park will appear in ‘The Mail’ at a later date, also reference will be made to Wantirna Rd, in the early days it was known as West Prussia Rd). Joe went to the school held in the old homestead and orchard of Mr. Mills, just through the Heatherdale Road railway gates. He remembered many of the scholars, some of the boys and girls had to walk three and four miles to school through rough scrub paddocks in all kinds of weather. During the lunch hour a few of the boys generally went to the creek to fish for eels and would be late in getting back to school, greatly to the annoyance of the teacher. One day the fishing was good, and the boys rather reluctantly returned to the school late as usual. The teacher was furious and made them stand in front of the class but before inflicting punishment she called out to one of the boys to throw out that dirty bag he was holding. The lad gave the bag a shake and out wriggled a snake. There was immediately a general stampede from the classroom, led by the teacher. The school was closed for the rest of the afternoon. Another incident related to a few tramps who after the scholars had all gone home, generally camped for the night in an old back room in the homestead. One of the boys put a little gunpowder in this old fireplace and when the tramps lit the fire to boil their billies the old chimney and part of the old wall just collapsed. Joe, after leaving school, worked around the district for some time and later left Ringwood to live in other suburbs. He at one time was employed at the Aust Glass Works, and later as a carpenter worked on building the dome of the Railway Station at Flinders St. He married a Miss E. M. Wood in 1901 at Richmond and a few years afterwards returned to Ringwood and resided at No. 18 Wantirna Rd., where he reared a family' of three girls (Alice, Ethel, Joyce) and two boys (Robert and Joe). Joe recalled many interesting events of earlier years, such as the duplication of the railway line, and the cutting back of the embankment at the Goods Shed, the earth being used to heighten up the railway bridge over Wantirna Rd. The brickworks at Ringwood East and reference to early land surveys, the using of the heavy chain links before the use of the theodolite became general, and the many neighbours and friends whom he knew. He was interested in local public affairs and was fond of fishing. He proved himself a good citizen and was highly respected and esteemed throughout the district, and so another old pioneer passes on." (Contributed by J. K. McCaskill, J.P.) RM 19 Nov 1959

In 2018 GHS members visited Turner's Bakery in Mernda for lunch and continued on to visit historic sites remaining in the Mernda area. This photograph shows the newly built Mernda Station, part of the railway extension on the old Epping line. This station was opened in August 2018. Mernda is now the end of the line. It is sited on corner Bridge Inn Road and Schotters Road. View of Main Street Greensborough from Partington's Hill including Plenty River bridge and Marble Hall on corner of Carter Street (now Para Road) and Main Street. This view of Greensborough Park shows the old pan toilets, the hawthorn fence line and the rather undeveloped roadside area of the park. Looking up Main Street we see the old Chapman house at the corner of Poulter Avenue and some newer houses below this. The stone river bridge appears to be only a single lane wide and the road approaching the bridge is unsealed. The rail bridge shows evidence of soot from steam trains and at the extreme left of picture the two concrete buildings indicate the line had been electrified. This occurred in 1923. This photograph was taken near the Snowy River Bridge on the the old Princes Highway in Orbost, near the caravan park. The 1971 flood was the the worst flood on record. At Jarrahmond it was at least 11 metres and up to one and a half kilometres wide on the flats causing enormous damage to the flood plain. Records say that "The brown floodwater stain in Bass Strait could be seen from passing airliners." Considerable damage was done to railway infrastructure, roads and farms. This book is a social history collected orally and from the private records of residents of the Wairewa Valley, Victoria, Australia. It includes a brief history of the old primary school. Appended is a performance piece 'Waltz for Wairewa", a dialogue with poems and songs. It was sponsored by the Hospital Creek Bush Band and Dance Group. The book was partly the result of two song writing courses, one run on-line for six weeksby Sheffield University, U.K., and another year-long course at U3A in Lakes Entrance, East Gippsland.
