ony Garifalakis' practice over the past two decades has constituted an examination of social relations and the semiotics of power. Garifalakis completed a Master of Fine Art at RMIT University, and has exhibited extensively in Australia and internationally. His works are represented in major public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. These three works are from Garifalakis’ series of denim works titled, Mutually Assured Destruction. The artist says of these works: “This series of works are denim collages that juxtapose political and corporate iconography with cute and benign clip art imagery. The aim being to confuse, collapse or diffuse any power these symbols might contain. The use of this particular iconography is undermined by the material it is made with. The denim becomes a tool that correlates global and political organizations with outlaw groups, gangs and criminality. I am interested in denim’s association to outlaw groups and gangs. Denim is currently a billion dollar global industry; I am aware that any cultural identification it has to a counterculture or outlaw status is obsolete and outdated. I am interested in exploring this idea – how a globally commonplace material once contained a completely different set of signifiers. The focus of these works is the material – denim. They are monochromatic works that aim to highlight the material that they are made with. In addition to the collage technique I have ‘drawn’ on some of these works by employing elements associated with biker and gang jackets such as – stitching, studs, chains, safety pins, etc.”

This image is believed to be taken in 1879. The photograph depicts gaol staff in front of what was believed to be the original timber gates of Beechworth Gaol. This has been proven false through photographic evidence but is believed to be somewhere within the Old Beechworth Gaol. The Old Beechworth Gaol opened in 1864 as a result of the gold rush boom that struck Beechworth in 1852, bringing with it a large population desperate for riches. It is most famously known for holding Australia's most famous outlaw, Ned Kelly, along with his relatives and supporters, the Kelly Gang. It is now open for tour for the public. This photo depicts Old Beechworth Gaol, which has extreme historical significance to the town of Beechworth through both the building and the prisoners who occupied it. The dead whale washed ashore at Warrnambool and has been in the photographed position for around a month when the photograph was taken. Warrnambool is Victoria's Southern Right Whale Nursery and whales have been visiting for hundreds of years. They were hunted almost to the point of extinction, but after whaling was outlawed in 1935 the numbers have been growing. Southern Right Whales live in the sub-Antarctic and migrate to warmer waters around southern Australia in Winter. Female whales migrate to the "nursery" areas close to the shores to bear their calves staying in the nursery for many weeks, allowing claves to feed and gather strength for the return journey to sub-Antarctic waters. The Southern Right Whale can be recognised but its smotth, black back with no dorsal fin. A number of crusty outgrowths, called callosities, are found on the head.Three images of a dead whale washed ashore at Warrnambool. warrnambool, whale, death, sea, shore, southern right

Established by George Guthrie in 1857 (about 5km north of its current site) and then again seven years later in 1864 after it initially closed, Bendigo Pottery remains one of the most influential and longest running Pottery’s in Australia. Over the years the Pottery has contributed to the growth and development of the district through both its products including building products, table ware and decorative and commemorative war as well as artistically, being responsible for training and supporting many potters locally. The City of Greater Bendigo has had a long history of partnering with Bendigo Pottery and the Civic Collection holds a number of important items within its collection. Ned Kelly is one of Australia's most iconic outlaws. Kelly was born and raised in rural Victoria, the third of eight children to Irish parents. His father, a transported convict, died in 1866, leaving Kelly, then aged 12, as the eldest male of the household. The Kelly's were a poor selector family who saw themselves as downtrodden by the squattocracy and as victims of persecution by the Victoria Police. While a teenager, Kelly was arrested for associating with bushranger Harry Power and served two prison terms for a variety of offences, the longest stretch being from 1871 to 1874. He later joined the "Greta Mob", a group of bush larrikins known for stock theft. A violent confrontation with a policeman occurred at the Kelly family's home in 1878, and Kelly was indicted for his attempted murder. Fleeing to the bush, Kelly vowed to avenge his mother, who was imprisoned for her role in the incident. After he, his brother Dan, and associates Joe Byrne and Steve Hart shot dead three policemen, the government of Victoria proclaimed them outlaws. Kelly died aged 25 at Melbourne Goal after being captured by Police in Glenrowan and sentenced to death. (Source Wikipedia).Brown glazed slip cast jug. This Australian yesteryear postcard was published by Cobb & Co in circa 1990. It is a sepia toned artwork of the Ann Jones Inn in Glenrowan which was taken prior to 1880. The building at rear in this photograph was the private residence of Ann Jones, a migrant from Tipperary, Ireland. Two years after building her private residence, in 1878/1879, Ann Jones added the Inn to the front of the building which is depicted in the postcard. In 1880 the Inn was burned to the ground during the Kelly Gang siege. After the siege, Ann Jones and her children continued to live on the same location in a makeshift hut. This hut was later replaced with a dwelling using compensation money provided to Ann from the government for the loss of her property and goods; however, she was denied a new trading licence which did not enable her to re-establish her previously successful business. The reverse of this postcard provides a snippet of information into the Glenrowan siege, for which this site is most well-known. It outlines the role and demise of the members of the Kelly Gang but what it does not include is how Ann Jones, owner of the Inn depicted on the postcard, was impacted. Ann’s son of 13 years, Johnny was killed during the siege, and a bullet grazed the forehead of her daughter, Jane Jones. Jane would die two years after this event from tuberculosis, but it was believed by Ann that the cause was grief for the death of her brother and distress at having witnessed the siege. Ann was provided with 100 pounds in compensation money for the loss of her children. Her husband, Owen Jones passed away late 1880 and in 1891 Ann Jones remarried. She died at the age of 80 in 1910. The “last stand” of the Kelly Gang at this location is estimated by Dr Stuart Dawson of Monash University to have taken less than 10 minutes in duration. During and following this time, the life of Ann Jones was turned upside down and everything she had worked for in the preceding years was now in ruins. This postcard has the capacity to reveal information about the popularity of the Kelly story in Australia. It was created in approximately the 1990s which perhaps reveals a resurgence in interest into the Kelly Gang and Australian history when card was made. This image, and others depicting the Ann Jone’s Inn, have the ability to shed light on the Kelly story and the events of the Glenrowan Siege. Additionally, they can reveal information into the life of a female business owner during the 1870-1880 period. Archaeological research has been conducted at this site by LaTrobe University and a study of these images alongside the analysis of the material culture found at this location can help to build more comprehensive understanding into life in Australia during this period and Ann Jones herself.Sepia rectangular postcard printed on cardObverse: [Illegible] Reverse: G4/ 3276/ Australian / Yesteryear / cards/ correspondence / address / Published by Cobb & Co (03) 5766 2409 / The Glenrowan Inn owned by Ann Jones. / It was this Inn in which the Kelly Gang imprisoned / 62 people, while waiting for the special train / carrying the police to arrive from Benalla. The Pilgrims Progress Author: John Bunyan Curated By: Rev. Robert Philip Publisher: George Virtue Date: 1850 Further Information: Red hardcover with a red spine and reinforced corners, lettering in gilt. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionWritten in 1678, The Pilgrim's Progress is a deeply influential Christian allegory that tracks the spiritual journey of a man named Christian. Weighed down by a crushing burden on his back (representing his sins), Christian flees his home in the "City of Destruction", after reading a holy book. Guided by the evangelist Evangelist, he embarks on a perilous trek toward the Celestial City (Heaven). Along the way, his journey brings him face-to-face with a cast of characters who personify spiritual triumphs and trials, such as Faithful, Hopeful, Mr Worldly Wiseman, and Giant Despair. He must navigate legendary, treacherous obstacles like the Slough of Despond, the temptations of Vanity Fair, and a terrifying battle with the demon Apollyon. The narrative is structured as a dream sequence experienced by the narrator. Because the second half follows Christian's wife, Christiana, and their children on the same path, it functions as both an adventure tale and a road map for the Puritan concept of salvation. It should be noted that the 1850 George Virtue printing is a classic example of a mid-Victorian luxury reprint. It is highly notable because it was curated by the popular non-conformist minister and author Rev. In this image a Colt 1855 Revolving Rifle is placed upon a sign detailing an £8,000 reward for robbery and murder. Writing on the rear of the photograph identifies the rifle as having belonged to Joe Byrne. In colonial Victoria, the Colt brand firearm was highly popular. They began their popularity in the goldfields of the early 1850s. Individuals, particularly those coming to Victoria with prior experience in the goldfield, brought with them a means of self-defence because of the prevalence of assault and robbery on the goldfields. In the 1860s, the Colt firearm became popular among the Victorian Police force. It was decided in June 1864 by Chief Commissioner of Police, Frederick Standish that the Colt revolvers were far more practical, being of simpler construction and therefore, more easily cleaned and less dangerous than the revolvers used prior to this: the Adams and Kerr firearms. The Colt revolver remained in use in regional districts of Victoria as late as the early 1880 when they were used at the Kelly siege at Glenrowan. The £8,000 reward was issued in 1879 after the Kelly Gang committed numerous bank robberies at Euroa and Jerilderie. In the year prior, the Kelly Gang murdered three policemen at Stringybark Creek. This resulted in the creation of the “Felon’s Apprehension Act 1878” which enabled an individual, whether a part of the Police force or civilian, to shoot a declared outlaw on sight. After the bank robberies, the Police force of NSW and Victoria increased the existing reward to this £8,000 amount. This photograph is significant for what it can potentially reveal about the Kelly Gang and firearms made in this period. The rifle in the image is a Colt Revolving Rifle which was known to have been used by the Victorian Police force from the early 1850s to the late 1880s. It is also known that the Kelly Gang stole police rifles which they used to practise with and so the identification of the rifle as having belonged to Joe Byrne is of significant importance to researchers studying the firearms of the Kelly Gang. More research is needed to solidify the connection of this particular weapon to Byrne other than the handwritten note on the back of the photograph. The Burke Museum Beechworth is home to a significant collection of photographs connected to Ned Kelly and the Kelly Gang. Photographs like this one are valuable for what they can potentially reveal about the Kelly Gang and the Police force during this period. Alongside the study of the other images, photographs from this collection have the ability to further expand current knowledge on this period of Australian history. There is also the capability to provide an analysis of how these firearms and Kelly memorabilia have been received in the past. It could be beneficial to undertake a close study of the use history and reception of these artefacts within the museum context.Black and white rectangular reproduced photograph printed on matte photographic paperReverse: 10268 / Joe Byrne's / Riflekelly album, ned kelly, kelly gang, joe byrne, rewards, outlaw, criminals, bushrangers, colt, police, firearm, beechworth, reward, felon's apprehension act 1878, 1880, glenrowan, colt revolver, revolving rifle, 8000 pound reward, jerilderie, euroa, beechworth goldfield

Waverley Novels Vol 8 Rob Roy, Light brown hardcover lettering in black text. Author: Sir Walter Scott Publisher: Fisher Son & Co Date: 1838fictionThe subject volume from the “Waverley Novels Rob Roy Vol 8” published by Fisher Son & Co (1838) is part of a collected edition of Sir Walter Scott's works, containing stories from the "Tales of My Landlord" series. "Tales of My Landlord" forms a key subset of Scott's Waverley Novels, presented as fictional tales gathered by characters like Peter Pattieson from the landlord of the Wallace “Inn at Gandercleugh”. The series spans multiple books across four sub-series, including “The Black Dwarf” (1707 setting), “Old Mortality” (1679–1689), “The Heart of Midlothian” (1736), “The Bride of Lammermoor” (1709–1711), “A Legend of Montrose” (1644–1645), “Count Robert of Paris” (1097), and “Castle Dangerous” (1307). Vol 46 in the 1838 Fisher edition reprints later entries like “Count Robert of Paris” or “Castle Dangerous” from the fourth series, as these stories originally appeared in Scott's Magnum Opus collected volume editions, the first from 1816. With the influential 48-volume “Magnum Opus” edition from 1829–1833 by Robert Cadell, serving as the basis for later collected published sets like Fisher's. First appearing as a three-volume set in December 1817, Rob Roy became one of Scott's most popular works, later standardised as Volume 8 in various Waverley Novels editions from the 1820's onward, such as the 1830 Magnum Opus issue. Early collected editions, like those from Adam & Charles Black (1878) or Fisher, Son & Co. (1836), often split it across two physical volumes labelled as "Vol. VIII," reflecting the series' format for lengthy novels.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, waverley novels vol 46 tales of my landlord, sir walter scott, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library

The Rob Roy Hill Climb originated in 1935 on the property of former Heidelberg Mayor, William Clinton, where he reared the Rob Roy breed of miniature ponies. He established Pleasure Grounds on part of the property attracting groups of Sunday visitors from Melbourne's inner suburbs. Visitors enjoyed a picnic area, pony rides, a dance hall and a tap room. Young men would ride their BSA or Harley Davidson motorcycles to the property which led to regular club-organised hillclimb meetings between 1930 and 1936. In 1935 Clinton offered the use of his property to the Light Car Club of Australia for their hillclimbs. The track was sealed that same year and the hillclimb at Clintons Road was one of only three specially designed bitumen surface hillclimbs in the world, the others being Shelsey Walsh and Prescott Hillclimbs in the UK. The first Light Car Club of Australia hillclimb was held at Rob Roy in February 1937. Covered under Heritage Overlay, Nillumbik Planning Scheme. Published: Nillumbik Now and Then / Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p133 About six times a year the unlikely sound of car engines emerges from deep in the heart of Christmas Hills.* Usually a quiet retreat, the Hills are home to one of the world’s oldest purpose-built motor sport venues - the Rob Roy Hillclimb. When sealed in 1939, the hillclimb at Clintons Road was one of only three specially designed bitumen surface hillclimbs in the world, the others being Shelsley Walsh and Prescott Hillclimbs in the UK.1 The Rob Roy Hillclimb originated in 1935 on the property of former Heidelberg mayor, William Clinton, where he reared the Rob Roy breed of miniature ponies. Rob Roy was the Scottish folk hero and outlaw. On part of his property Clinton established Pleasure Grounds, attracting Sunday parties from Melbourne’s inner suburbs. Visitors enjoyed a picnic area, pony rides, a dance hall and a tap room.2 Young men riding on their BSA or Harley Davidson bikes led to club-organised regular hillclimb meetings, between 1930 and 1936. In 1935 Clinton offered his property to the Light Car Club of Australia for their hillclimbs. In February 1937, the first Light Car Club of Australia hillclimb meeting was held at Rob Roy. Jack Day achieved the fastest time that day for the 760 yard (695m) track at 36 seconds in a Ford V8 engined Bugatti Special. At first the climb was just a dusty gravel track, but in 1939 it was up-graded and bituminised. Today the 695 metre track begins on a slight incline, proceeds through a sharp right turn, which formerly passed a rusty iron shed, now remembered by the name Tin Shed Corner. The track continues down a slight incline to a level stretch along the top of an embankment holding back a half-acre (0.2ha) dam, then up to a one-in-three gradient. The track then winds uphill through several left turns to the finish line. In 1939 Frank Kleinig reduced the record to 29.72 seconds in an MG Hudson. Throughout World War Two the Rob Roy Hillclimbs were suspended, but were resumed in 1947. The hillclimbs consistently attracted crowds averaging 500 to 600 people, peaking at 2000, until the hillclimb was destroyed by the 1962 bushfires. The meetings included nine Australian Hillclimb Championships, with the first in 1938 won by Peter Whitehead in his ERA. Eight of the Outright and Class record holders were Australian Grand Prix winners including Jack Brabham, who became a triple F1 World Champion. The Light Car Club of Australia held 61 meetings at Rob Roy. Events usually included Touring, Gran Turismo, Production, Sports, Racing and Vintage cars and in the latter years Go-carts. These meets suddenly stopped after the 1962 bushfire destroyed the access bridge on the property leading to the track area, although fortunately Clinton saved his home. The club then established the Lakeland Hillclimb venue close to Lilydale.3 From 1979 to 1987 the MG Car Club ran hill climbs at the Templestowe Hillclimb until the land was to be sub-divided. In 1991 the MGCC approached the Shire of Nillumbik about using the derelict Rob Roy venue. In 1992, after much lobbying, the club signed a ten-year lease from Melbourne Water, which has been renewed. The original track was faithfully reconstructed. Access roads were improved and guard rails were installed on the causeway. Permanent structures were rebuilt and tonnes of rubbish removed. This was made possible by an immense amount of voluntary work by MGCC members and financial support from the newly formed Friends of Rob Roy. In February 1993 the first Return to Rob Roy Historic Meeting was run with a huge spectator attendance of around 1000 enthusiasts. In September 2007, the Nillumbik Shire Council gave the hillclimb heritage protection. This acknowledged the property’s significant contribution to early Australian motor sport with its social connection to William Clinton and the local community.4 *Christmas Hills was named after emancipated convict and shepherd David Christmas, lost in these hills. This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. non-fictionThe gripping story of a small force of Australian Special Forces commandos that launched relentless hit and run raids on far superior Japanese forces in East Timor for most of 1942. These Australians were the men of the 2/2nd Australian Independent Company – a special commando unit. Initially stranded without radio contact to Australia, the Japanese declared these beared warriors ‘outlaws’ and warned they would be executed immediately if captured. The Australians drawn mainly from the bush, were chosen for their ability to operate independently and survive in hostile territory. As film-maker Damien Parer said after visiting in Timor in late 1942, ‘these men are writing an epic of guerrilla warfare’. Expertly researched by Paul Cleary, who is fluent in Tetum, the main language of the indigenous group of East Timor, it contains black and white photos.ww2, independent company, timor, world war ii, australian commando
