... Chris Pappas - then and now ...The following is written underneath the photograph - Chris Pappas ... then and now. Mr. Pappas was born in 1898 and came to Australia from Stavros, Ithaca in 1911. The earlier photo was taken in Australia , aged 14 . . " when I had saved enough money I bought these clothes . . . I had an uncle in Newcastle and he had a shop . . . most of the Greeks had someone to work for them then. I worked there for 3 years. My family didn't want me to leave (Greece) so early . . . those days the 'slavery market', relatives wanted someone to work for them who they trusted." Contemporary photograph taken in Newcastle, 1986. Chris Pappas' story is similar to that of many Ithacans who arrived in Australia in the early decades of the twentieth century. Newcastle was one of the regional areas in NSW whereto Ithacans settled and opened businesses.Two black and white photographs have been printed on the one board. They are photographs of a man when he was young and as an old man. Details of the man's story have also been printed underneath the photograph. -

... Irini Pappas performing ...Pictured is Irini Pappas ( Papadopoulos) in the role of 'Ismini' in the production of 'Antigone' which was performed at the University of Melbourne. The play was directed by Nikos Dimitrakopoulos, a director from Greece. Also appearing in the production were fellow Ithacans Spiro Paizis, Stathis Raftopoulos and Sophia Paizis. Irini was a well known actor in the Greek community who appeared in various television productions and local theatre productions, both Greek and English. Irini was a trailblazer. She challenged traditional views of the role and career pathways of young Australian born Greek Ithacan women of her era. Although her passion was the theatre, she undertook a varied range of occupations including teaching, counselling and vocational guidance. In her work with women of migrant background she encouraged them not be constrained by the social or cultural expectations of others.A black and white portrait photograph of a young lady. -

Irini Pappas and her husband Paul Anagnostou are photographed with the captain's wife (right), Irini's father's first cousin during the visit of the SS Gratsos ship. She was one of only two women ever qualified as first mate. At the time the Women's Weekly ran a double page spread featuring her. in Greece on board a ship travelling to or from Ithaca.'George D. Gratsos - Ithaca' printed on the buoy indicates that the ship was part of the Gratsos shipping company. The shipping activities of the Gratsos family from Ithaca began in 1902, when Georgios D. Gratsos (1870–1931) bought the ship Odysseus, in partnership with the Dracoulis family, of which Gratsos' wife was a member. The photo is of Thalia Paizis taken in Ithaca in 1907. Thalia left Ithaca as very young child together with her mother, Chrisaida, to be reunited with her father, Nicholas Paizis in Perth W.A. Nicholas had left Ithaca prior to Thalia's birth in 1905 and established a successful business in Perth, W.A. Thalia went back to Greece in 1921 and eventually returned to Australia where she married Anastasios Papadopoulos in 1929 and settled in Melbourne. Introduced in 1974, the Braille Book of the Year was created to both acknowledge excellence in writing as well as raise the profile of Braille books. In 1993, the award was won by Ruth Park for her book 'A Fence Around a Cuckoo'. The award was accepted by her literary agent Tim Curnow. The Bathurst Award for Narrator of the Year award went to Irini Pappas for the audio version of 'Put Your Whole Self In', a story about the Northcote Self Group Hydrotherapy and Massage group, by Meme McDonald, which also won 'Audio Book of the Year'.
