Awarded to: School Children of the Commonwealth of Australia Other Details: Of the commemorative medals issued to mark the end of the First World War, the most common was the so-called 'Peace' or 'Victory' medal issued to every child in Australia aged 0-14 years (and aged up to 16 if parents were in the armed forces). The medal was designed by Charles Douglas Richardson, better known for his work as a sculptor. Time constraints as well as pressure from the production of other victory medals meant that no single manufacturer could make the 1,670,000 medals. Six were therefore selected: Amor, Stokes, Schlank, Parkes, Angus & Coote (who later withdrew) and Platers. The medals were silvered bronze, with silver issues for special presentations. The Defence Department supplied a red, white and blue striped ribbon and pin. Distribution began in March 1919. A Victory Medal was given to school children after the end of World War 2 in 1945. 1 150 000 of these medals were distributed to Australian school children to coincide with the end of the war in the Pacific in August 1945. It was designed by Lyndon Dadswell and the makers were Stokes & Sons.The medal was one way generations would know about Worlds War 2 in 1945.A small medal with a striped red, white and blue ribbon threaded through an eyelet at the top. The medal was distributed to Australian school children to coincide with the 10 June 1945 celebrations for the end of the war in Europe. The medalets were actually handed out on 6 June. Victory in Europe Day (V-E Day or VE Day) was on May 8, 1945, the date when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Nazi Germany. Medals belonged to Senior Nurse Bessie Shircliffe Johnson who served with the Queen Alexandria's Imperial Military Nursing Staff Reserve during WWI. She served in England, Egypt and Greece. Three World War One medals mounted on a badge pin together. The 1914-1915 Star a bronze four pointed star with crown at top with a watered ribbon of red merging into white which merges into blue. The 1914-1915 Star reverse is flat and plain; stamped with recipient’s details. The British War Medal 1914-1918 shows a bareheaded effigy of King George V facing left, ribbon is orange with borders in dark blue, black and white. The British War Medal 1914-1918 reverse shows Saint George naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, the horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross-bones. The Victory Medal, 1914-1919 is bronze with a winged figure of Victory on the front, the ribbon has a 2 rainbow design, with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet. The reverse of the Victory Medal, 1914-1919 is bronze has the words The Great War For Civilisation surrounded by a laurel wreath. The name of the recipient is engraved along the bottom edge of both the British War medal and the Victory medal. The Victory Medal was authorised in 1919 to commemorate the victory of the Allied Forces over the Central Powers. Each of the Allied nations issued a ‘Victory Medal’ to their own nationals. Each nation used the standard ribbon but used different designs on the medal to reflect national identity and custom. A number had the figure of Victory on the obverse. Australians were awarded the medal issued by Great Britain. The Victory Medal was awarded to prescribed classes of persons who entered a theatre of war on duty between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Service # 2353 William Ambrose Kennedy was born in Ballarat and enlisted in Melbourne on the17th January 1916 at the age of 35 years and 6 months. He fought with the 3rd Australian Division of the 37th Battalion in France and Belgium. He was killed in action on the 8th June 1917.Circular Victory Medal. 1914 - 1919. The Australian School Children's Victory Medal was distributed to school children in 1945 to commemorate the end of WW2 in Europe.
