Hay bale saws were a common agricultural tool. Ed Nolt, a Dutch resident of Pennsylvania, USA, invented the prototype for the small square baler back in the 1930s. His patent was purchased and mass produced during the 1940s. These balers quickly spread throughout the world and became a common agricultural machine. The hale bale saw was used to cut up the bales when distributing feed to livestock. As modern agricultural production has turned more to the use of large round bales, these small saws have become obsolete. This saw was used by a farmer in North Barnawatha approximately 18 kilometres from Wodonga, Victoria.This saw is representative of the agricultural tools in the mid to late 20th century.A metal saw with 2 wooden handles. In April 1999, Arthritis Foundation of Victoria staff travelled to Merbein, Sea Lake, and Mildura during National Arthritis Week (NAW). These visits were conceived as part of the Rural Access Project. As his father was Jewish, Duras was forced to leave Germany, and came to Australia to take up a post as director of physical education at Melbourne University. This instrument was part of a collection of instruments given to his son-in-law, Dr Michael Kloss, who was an obstetrician. Dr Kloss subsequently had it engraved and used it in his own practice, before donating the item to the College. Metal instrument used for cervical sutures. Instrument consists of a handle and shaft. The end of the shaft is curved so as the tip of the instrument is almost perpendicular to the handle. The end of the shaft is in the shape of a loop to allow for sutures to be passed through it. Image was donated by Mr. Peter JM Bell of West Yorkshire, UK in 2009. Mr. Bell worked for Robert Jowitt & Sons between 1999 and 2006 when the company ceased operations. Mr. Bell discovered this photo and decided to donate it to the National Wool Museum. Jowitt & Sons was established in 1775 and became a limited company in 1919. The Churchill Island collection includes objects from the late 1800s. The collection is presented in sets and series, of which this horse-drawn grader represents the Jenkins era. Churchill Island has been variously imagined and used to make a permanent settler colonial space since the mid-1800s. The history of the island offers a rich example of the complexity of private settlement in Victoria up until 1976 when it was sold to the Victorian Government.Yellow and red horse-drawn grader attached to an unpainted wooden pole. Four steel wheels connected into pairs by axles are linked through the long arched metal piece, where a seat, crank, and levers are attached. Meyer was a very prominent early obstetrician and doctor, playing a part in the establishment of the role of the chair of obstetrics at the University of Melbourne in 1929. He was also a foundation member of the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.Metal curette (surgical scraping tool). Consists of a handle section with divots for ergonomic finger grip, and a straight, thin metal shaft which forks into two small arms with a cutting blade between them at the tips. The arms at the end of the shaft are curved so that the blade is perpendicular to the shaft of the instrument. This is one of a collection of items received from the practice of Dr Lachlan Hardy-Wilson, FRCOG, Launceston, Tasmania.Stainless steel punch forceps. There are two circular finger grips at one end, resembling a pair of scissors, attached to short arms that meet at a point. A long narrow shaft extends perpendicularly from this point, ending in a small, hinged, toothed grip. Writing engraved on one arm of forceps reads 'Stainless Germany'. This sewing machine screwdriver likely belonged to Ruby May Selina Wallace (1891-1973) of Inglewood, Victoria. It was donated by an Emerald resident. Several items of clothing owned by Ruby or her mother Ellen Dowsett (1858-1953) are also in the Emerald and District Museum collection; the sewing machine associated with this screwdriver likely played a part in the maintenance, repair and possible creation of several of those items. Sewing machine screwdrivers are still used in the operation and repair of modern sewing machines, but it is rare to find bent wire versions like this item, which was also designed for an older model of sewing machine. This tool is representative of the processes of making and maintaining clothes in early 20th century domestic life, is no longer in common manufacture in this form, and was involved in the creation of several items in the collection.This screwdriver made of bent metal wire consists of a loop (ideal for holding during operation), a shaft bent in a rounded right angle, and a flat head pointing perpendicular to the direction of the loop. The right angle allows for more turning force to be applied through the head of the screwdriver than would be possible with a straight version, and makes it easier to access certain parts of the sewing machine.N/A1920s, textiles, clothing
