This envelope has been used at the Warrnambool chemist shop of Harry Shilton to protect the films (snapshots) developed for a customer. Harry Shilton’s shop was at 119 Liebig Street. He took over the pharmacy business of Ralph Barnes in 1937 and Alan Anderson became his business partner in 1953. Mr Shilton retired from the business in 1960. No information is available on the recipient of the photographs (‘Mrs. Leah’)This envelope is retained as a memento of the pharmacy business of Harry Shilton, a mid 20th century chemist in This is a buff-coloured paper envelope with an overlapping flap with adhesive on it for sealing the envelope. This camera, made by the American firm of Eastman Kodak, was the best-selling folding camera during the first half of the 20th century. This is the ‘autographic’ model as there is provision at the back of the camera for note-taking. This model was made between 1915 and 1926 and it is called the soldier’s camera because of its compact size. Over 1,000,000 cameras of this type were sold during World War One. This camera belonged to C.C. McNeil of Caramut, a town 55 kilometres north of Warrnambool. This camera is of interest as it belonged to a person from the Warrnambool district and it is a good example of a pocket camera with note-writing facilities. This is a black metal camera in a rectangular shape with rounded edges. It has three glass apertures and a metal winder. It also has an opening shutter at the back of the camera where notes can be written on to the paper backing of the film. The front of the camera opens and a concertina-like metal attachment affixed to the back of the camera can be pulled out to reveal the lens. This is covered in black leather. This box has been used to store photographic glass slides. Since the 1850s glass slides or lantern slides have been used in photography and were particularly popular from the 1870s on. They preceded photographic film and were eventually eclipsed by the 35 mm. colour slides produced by Kodachrome in the mid 20th century. Glass slides, however, were still in use up to the 1990s in some scientific areas such as astronomy because of the stability of glass ware. This container has no known local provenance and is retained for display purposes.This is a brown varnished wooden container made in a rectangular shape. It is hinged at one end with two metal hinges and has two metal clips on the sides to keep the container closed. There are also two metal clips at the top perhaps for storage purposes. This postcard folder is one of three in a set of postcards that were published in Victoria, Australia, and collected together. The Valentine Publishing Co. Pty. Ltd. produced this folder. Valentine and Sons was a printing and photography business based in Dundee, Scotland, and in Canada. In the early 1900s, at the height of the postcard craze, the firm published large numbers of postcards in the U.K., Canada, U.S., Australia and South Africa. From around 1900 or earlier, the firm bought many lithographic images for its postcards from local and national photographers who sold publishing rights to Valentines, and the business was famous for publishing photographs of popular sites worldwide. GEORGE ROSE 1861-1942: - George Rose was a well-known Victorian photographer, famous for his late 19th and early 20th century photography. He was born in Clunes, Victoria, and was in his 20th year when he founded Rose Stereograph Company in 1880. He took the opportunity of a popular trend of the times to produce stereographs, pairs of almost duplicate photographs that appeared in 3D when viewed in a handheld stereo viewer. By the 1920s, these lost their popularity, so he used his photographic skills to produce cards and postcards of scenes and people. The folder contains scenes from Warrnambool and nearby popular areas, including Lady Bay, the Port of Warrnambool, the Warrnambool Breakwater, the Viaduct, the Merri River Footbridge, the Hopkins River Mouth, and Proudfoot’s and the Fanny Nelson/Flett boathouses. The cover has a sketch of a rose and inscriptions. This photograph depicts a large group of men in their work clothing situated in front of a large bank of earth. They are identified as miners working in an unidentified location in Australia. This photograph was taken by photographer Walter Thwaites sometime during the period of 1865-1908, likely c.1870. It is unsure where this image was taken since Thwaites travelled a lot over his photography career and the photograph is not annotated with this information. In addition, the identities of the men in the photograph are also unknown. These men are photographed in front of a large bank of earth where they had presumably been mining for gold or other precious metals. The men, with the exception of four, are wearing wide brimmed hats to protect their faces from the sun. They are also wearing loose fitting white shirts which are often worn beneath a darker coloured vest. They wear pale coloured work pants and boots. The men are mostly clean shaven with the exception of the moustache and a couple of beards. Two of the men have pipes in their mouth. Their clothing is basic and much less dramatic than the outfits worn by the gold diggers of the 1852 gold rush. These men, by wearing similar outfits, are expressing a sense of comradery or equality between them. It is likely that they are from the same, or similar, social status. They have an air of independence and share social equality in their stance and clothing. Walter William McLean Thwaites (1840-1908) was a professional photographer born in Sydney, Australia. He learnt the craft in his father's Hobart studio, but later embarked on his own solo career and toured every existing Australian colony between 1860 to 1888. The Thwaites family were a long line of photographers and artists with Thwaites' father Walter WIlliam Thwaites Sr working as an artist and photographer in Australia after moving from England in 1834. Walter Thwaites Sr's father, also named Walter Thwaites, was a British miniature portrait artist.Images, like this one, of Australian gold rush history can reveal important information about the social and environmental impact of this period. This image depicts over 30 diggers standing in front of a bank of earth and therefore, this image has the capacity to reveal or support significant information for researchers studying the fashion and social status of diggers in Australia in approximately 1870. It can also provide information on the landscape of Australia in this period and the impact of mining for gold on both society and the Australian landscape. Keith David Livingston No VX136969 (born Jeparit, enlisted Mataranka NT) in the 2nd AIF on 21.6.43 age 20 years. At discharge from the Army he was a Pte in 173 Aust Field Ordnance Depot. He often told the story that he was in Darwin at the bombing and they moved them down to Katherine and then it was bombed so he was either in the CMF or working up there at the time and then enlisted in the AIF.
