The dwelling belonged to the dentist in the village of Stavros, the main village of the northern Ithaca which services the smaller surrounding villages.With the decline in population in the surrounding villages of northern Ithaca, services such as the dentist and post office are now only available in the main town of Vathi located in the south end of the island. Some services are only provided intermittently by visiting professionals from neighbouring Kefalonia or the mainland.A black and white photograph with a white crinkled border of a house with vines growing across the front. The building in the photograph was the post office at Stavros, the main village in the north of Ithaca. Like many small villages with declining populations, the Stavros post office no longer operates and locals must travel to main town of Vathi to access a post office and other services.The permanent population of Ithaca is approximately 3100 (2016) with the majority based in the main town of Vathi. The population in the 1940s was over 8000. Ithaca's population declined sharply after World War II as a result of immigration and movement to larger cities of Greece. This image shows the house occupied by Thomas Mason and his family in 1883. The man in the centre of the image holding the reins of the horse is possibly Thomas Mason. One of the two women seated in the buggy is possibly his wife Catherine Mason (nee Whelan). This house was built by grazier George Palmer Hall around 1846-1848 north of what is now Lerderderg Street, Bacchus Marsh, at a point close to the Lerderderg River. The house and the accompanying farm of over 5,000 hectares was leased by George Ball to George Hobler in the late 1840s and early 1850s. During this time George Hobler's daughter Emily married Henry Bacchus the son of Captain William Bacchus. By 1865 Thomas Mason had purchased the property. Mason named the property Riverton. After his death in the 1890s the property was owned by a number of different people. The house was still in use until 1999 but since this time has been unoccupied and its condition has significantly deteriorated.This image is significant because it depicts one of the earliest houses built in the town of Bacchus Marsh. The Melbourne photographers Stevenson & McNicoll visited the Bacchus Marsh district in 1883. They took photographs of many local families and individuals in front of their houses or businesses. More than 50 of these images were preserved by the Hawkins family of Bacchus Marsh and passed to a granddaughter of that family Mrs Beryl Jeremeas who donated those images to the Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society in 1973. Stevenson & McNicoll are known to have taken numerous studio portrait photographs of Bacchus Marsh people. This was probably the larger part of their work. He was born at Mon Joie, Normandy, France, near the town of Vire. Elizabeth Sophia Francis was the daughter of Nicholas Cage? Burchardt, a banker, and Elizabeth Leslin. This photo of the National Bank of Australasia dates from 1883. The Bacchus Marsh Branch of the National Bank was established in 1862 and moved into its own premises at 127 Main Street in 1865. The building was designed by Leonard Terry and built by J.F.Taylor Snr. Additions to the building were made in 1869 and a banking chamber, in Roman Villa style, was added in 1904. This two storey bank was built with accommodation for the manager and his family who occupied part of the ground floor as well as upstairs. The bank sold these premises to solicitor Pauline Madden in July 1987 and is her current business premises.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. This building was part of a range of shops known as Victoria House, built by Vere Quaile, blacksmith, in 1857. It consisted of a shop, a blacksmith's forge and wheelwright, and was located to the east of the blacksmith's forge in Main Street. Between 1874 and 1892 Francis Timmons operated a clothier and drapers business in this building.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The house depicted in this image was constructed in 1865 for James Young a prominent local businessman and participant in community affairs. James Young left Bacchus Marsh in 1869. In 1870 Stone Villa was purchased by local solicitor Francis Gell. In 1872 it was bought by William Collyer. For a time before 1883 it was used as a school operated by Mr Thomas Kissock and his wife. From 1883 until 1922 it was used as a parsonage by the Church of England. In 1922 it was sold to Frederick Slack as a private residence. Since Slack's ownership there have been other owners. As of April 2024 it remains as a private residence and is listed as a heritage property in the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. The identity of the two women and young girl in the foreground of the image has not been established. One of the women, and the child are possibly the wife and daughter of the Rev A.C. McCausland who was the Church of England Vicar in Bacchus Marsh from 1872 until 1885 and would have resided in this house in 1883 when this picture was produced.An early visual record of one of the most culturally and architecturally significant nineteenth century stone houses in Bacchus Marsh.Small sepia 'carte de visite' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The Border Inn located on the corner of Main Street and Graham Street Bacchus Marsh opened in 1851 making it a very early hotel in Victoria. It was built and owned by John Pilmer. The first licensee was James Watt. The building has been added to and changed many times. It was originally a single storey building. A second storey was added in 1863 by John Pilmer. In 1866 the hotel was purchased by Edward Jones. The Jones family owned and operated the hotel until 1939. Additional second storey sections were added in 1883, 1904 and 1936. For a number of years the Border Inn was a stopping post for coaching services between Melbourne and Ballarat. The first licensee of the hotel James Watt was among the first in Victoria to offer a regular coaching service and his hotel was used for overnight accommodation by coach travellers. At the time this picture was taken coach services were still operating between Bacchus Marsh and other locations. The coach in this picture is possibly one of those coaches.This building has been documented as of state significance by Richard Peterson and Daniel Catrice in their 1995 heritage study for the then Shire of Bacchus Marsh. Their assessment of the heritage significance of the building was: "The Border Inn is of state historical significance as a pioneering pre-gold rush building, on the route to the Ballarat goldfields. It is the representative-embodiment of several historical periods and their way of life. It demonstrates a complex changing sequence of patterns of occupancy and architectural styles. Its development at this location, demonstrates the effect of a social movement, the gold rush, as a transport stopover.It is also historically significant for its association with the first rural public transport in Victoria. Bacchus Marsh Express of 7 November 1874 reports that this building was designed and erected by Mr Jeremiah Ryan for Mr H. G. Salter, draper. Mr Salter gave the name of "Hall of Commerce" to the building, a term in common usage at the time. The building was of a substantial size. In the Express of January 4 1879 Messrs Basham and Bradley advertised a wide variety of goods including drapery, millinery, ready-made clothing, boots and shoes and furniture. At the front of the building was the first pavement in the township. This photo forms a contrast with the photograph (also taken by Stevenson & McNicoll in 1883) of Timmons Clothier and Draper, but depicting an older building from 1857. This business was on the verge of closure, Mr Timmons conducting his business as a travelling salesman, taking his goods by horse and cart to outlying districts. The image provides an example of the growing scale of retail development in Bacchus Marsh in the late nineteenth century.This photograph is a record of a prominent commercial building that has undergone substantial change. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. William Marshall opened his new premises in Main Street in June 1869. In the following November he opened a wheelwright shop adjacent to his smithy. Mr T. Carlton was the wheelwright. The Marshall Blacksmith building was located next to the ANA Hall in Main Street. It was demolished in 1910 to make way for a new building known as the Chambers Building. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the blacksmith played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged. This Butcher’s shop was opened by J. Edwards. It adjoined G. Dickie’s bakery in Main Sreet. James Reid was born in Scotland near Glasgow and came to Victoria as a young man in 1854. Shortly after arriving he came to Bacchus Marsh where he lived until his death in 1902 at the age of 74 years. For most of these years he conducted a wheelwrights and coach builders business in Bacchus Marsh. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wheelwrights and blacksmiths played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, wheels and other components of vehicles for transport, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. Thomas Heath built this shop for his saddlery business around 1875. In 1926 after 58 years operating his saddlery in Bacchus Marsh he retired and the assets of his business were sold in a clearing sale. The building was located close to the current day location of 192 Main Street and has been demolished. Apart from his services in saddlery his premises was known to be a gathering place for much discussion. Heath was known to openly express his political opinions and his saddlery premises was known by many in the community as the 'Parliament'.Small sepia unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. The front gabled section stands directly on street level and is flanked by a picket fence. The door and overhead window and the side window with arched panels may indicate that this was the shop section, with a dwelling to the rear. Items which may be for sale can be seen hanging in the windows. The recessed side section of the building with a twelve-sectioned window, chimney and a back extension was probably the dwelling used by the family. On the footpath stands the saddler with three children, two boys and an older girl, probably Mr Thomas Heath and three of his five children. A hitching rail runs along the front of the workshop. Indicating the type of business Mr Heath ran, are a saddle placed over the rail and two horse collars and reins hanging either side of the workshop door. On the front: Stevenson & McNicoll. This store was built in 1881 and opened as a branch of Pearce Brothers main store which was further along in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh. The store in this image opened around early June 1881 and was described in the Bacchus Marsh Express as "quite above the usual standard of stores in towns of a similar or even much larger size. The building is most substantially built of brick, and measures 58 feet by 26 feet, with walls fourteen feet high inside. The interior is most elaborately fitted with shelves and glass cases covering both side walls and two ends formed by small offices separated from the main store by glass and wood panelled partitions, with a passage way between to the storeroom at the rear", Express, (Bacchus Marsh, 11 June, 1881, page 2). The building was designed by one of its proprietors T. G. The Harvest Home Hotel was licensed as a beer shop in 1866. Patrick Vallence was the licensee. On his death in 1874 his widow Mrs M. A. Vallence obtained the license. At the time this image was taken George Marshall was leasing the hotel. Following a decrease in the population of Bacchus Marsh, by 1911 the hotel had lost its licence.The Vallence family still owned the building after the loss of the hotel licence in 1911and it was used for some years after this as a private residence by some members of the Vallence family. The image depicts the Harvest Home Hotel situated in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. The name of the hotel can be seen above the verandah roof. The building appears to be of stone with decorative stonework corners. A verandah is inset to the left of a gabled front section which has its own door and window. On either side of the door beneath the verandah can be seen boot or shoe scrapers. A deep gutter runs along the front of the hotel, with a slab acting as a bridge to the road. Situated in the gutter at the front of the hotel is a water trough which has an arch above it with an ornate lantern, probably to light the front entry and to enable horses to be watered at night. Bacchus Marsh State School No. 28. The number of pupils in 1883 was 172. The school has undergone a number of name changes over the years. It began as the Bacchus Marsh National School in 1850 and at the time this photo was taken it was known as Bacchus Marsh State School. Since the 1970s it has been known as Bacchus Marsh Primary. It is officially recognised as the oldest government school in Victoria.This image is important as an early depiction of the first state school in Victoria, and is one of the two earliest images of this school.
