In value the penny was the second smallest denominator in the old imperial currency in Australia in the mid 20th century (halfpenny was the smallest). Decimal currency was introduced in 1966 and the two cent coin was the second lowest in value. It was withdrawn from circulation in 1992 but it is still legal tender in some circumstances. This coin was minted in the first year of decimal currency in Australia. The dollar note was introduced in 1966 and it in turn was replaced in 1984 by the dollar coin. These coins were in use in Australia during the 20th century up to 1965. The coinage was based on the imperial system with the basic currency unit being the pound. In February 1966 decimal coinage was introduced in Australia with the basic currency unit being the dollar (equivalent in value to half a pound or ten shillings). This collection of coins shows what coins looked like in Australia before the introduction of decimal currency. It is a very useful display item. This is a collection of coins in a wooden box. The wood is polished and has brass hinges on the lid and a brass lock and keyhole on the box’s side. The lid is lined with blue felt and on the top of the lid is a much-scratched brass shield (intended for inscribing a name). Inside the box there is a clear piece of glass over the coins which are pasted onto a piece of buff-coloured paper. There are 40 coins in the box. The wooden pricing stamps are part of the 'Mann' collection at the Wodonga Historical Society and were used in the J. Mann & Sons General Store in Wodonga High Street, prior to the introduction of the decimal currency in Australia in 1966. J. Mann and Sons was first established as a farm produce store in 1921. The range of products was extended in the 1930s and included groceries and hardware, as well as the first petrol bowser in Wodonga outside the store. After WWII, the premises were extended and the range of products continued to increase. In the 1960s the Mann Family opened a new supermarket in Wodonga, in addition to the hardware business, providing steel, plumbing and industrial supplies, and they employed over 100 people at one stage. With changes in the retail industry, the Mann Family sold the main hardware business to Bunnings and the produce business to the Kelly brothers in 2006.The collection of wooden pre-decimal pricing stamps have local significance due to their use in the J. Cash registers were used by businesses to store the money received for the transactions of goods and for recording the amount of money taken over a period of time e.g.. a day. This cash register is pre 1966, pre decimal currency and includes the halfpenny.Dudley Pigram who managed the Mongan's Bridge Caravan Park used this register. He brought it down to the Mt Bogong Clay Target Club in the 1970's although it is pre decimal currency. Dudley wass a founding member of the Clay Target Club.This brass cash register has a serial number indicating that it was made between 1905 and 1906. It is very heavy. Herbert Joseph Chambers was born in 1912 in Clifton Hill, Victoria. Later he was to live in Clark and Charles Streets in Northcote, in South Caulfield, and finally in Mentone. While he may have worked at the Kew Asylum before 1945, that year was when he was presented with a Certificate issued by the Department of Mental Hygiene (Victoria) declaring that he had completed training and passed the examinations required to work as a 'Mental Attendant’. The document is dated 19th December 1945 and signed by the Director of the Department and by the Co-Examiners. From at least 1945, he was to work as a member of the male staff of the Asylum, mainly in the Refractory Ward. A donor gifted to the Kew Historical Society in February 2019 a number of items collected by Herbert Chambers in his work at the Asylum. These include his Certificate of Registration, a photograph taken of him with two colleagues at Circular Quay in Sydney, a notebook containing ‘SP’ betting records of male asylum staff, and five sketchbooks with artwork created by Kenn’th [sic] Bailey, a patient of the Asylum. Herbert Chambers’ period of employment at the Kew Asylum coincided with the employment of the English psychiatrist Dr Eric Cunningham Dax (1908-2008) as Chairman of the Mental Hygiene Authority in 1952. Dr Dax introduced an art therapy program into Victorian psychiatric hospitals, including Kew, where it is likely that the five sketchbooks were created. The sketchbooks are believed to have been presented to Chambers by Bailey as a “gift for looking after him”. Herbert Chambers retired from the Kew Asylum in c.1970 after working there for almost thirty years.Small notebook, of which the cover is lost, including the names of male and female staff members at the Kew Mental Hospital, the amounts that they gambled and their winnings. It is presumed that the record was kept by Herbert Joseph Chambers, a member of staff between c.1945-70. The names in the book, including some of their aliases are arranged alphabetically. The prices are listed in pre-decimal currency, (i.e. before 1966). This brand of starch was first manufactured before 1966 and covered the period when Australian made was the preferred clothing due to limited imports from England. This was a period when the demand for "home grown" produce was at its peak. This was in a time when by necessity and ease of supply and not by the "Buy Australian" campaign (of later years), was the major factor for the demand of these type of laundry goods. It was in a time when starch was used in formal clothing to put a "crisp" or fresh new appearance for clothes. This product was in the era and importantly the social more of "clothes make the person" in which starched shirts and dresses was the fashion vogue. Formality of dress was a strictly British "class" up-man-ship which from the 1950's onwards became less and less visible. The Australian "Ocker" or fair "dink'm" bloke became more entrenched after World War II. The national identity was slowly developing.This box of starch is very relevant to the Kiewa Valley because this box highlights the differences ,in this period, between city and rural social standards. Rural areas were deeply entrenched into colonial and the pioneer family structure viz- a-vie social and dress fashion standards. British values and norms lingered on well beyond the changes happening in city fashion. Tradition and English "ties" were the backbone of early colonies and it was only after World War II that these "ties" were becoming irrelevant. Early traditions lingered well past the independence sought by Federation, colony to statehood and trade with other nations eg. USA and Asia. The idea that a change in "status" would automatically change the social mores of Australians, especially in rural ares, was not fully grasped by the "law makers" and those wanting change.This box (capacity 12 ozs) has white(aged into cream) and blue printing and a "white star" on five sides, the sixth side has a laundry scene with two ladies, in early 1900's fashion. The package is made from 200 gsm thick cardboard. As manufacture was made before and during the two World Wars 1914 to 1945 the promotion was heavily focused on Australian made and Australian grown maize. One side of the box has instructions of use and all the other sides are promotional, detailing "the best in the world and won't stick to the iron""SILVER STAR", "THE BEST IN THE WORLD", "WON'T STICK TO THE IRON", "REQUIRES NO BOILING", INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE", "ROBERT HARPER AND COMPANY LIMITED", "INCORPORATED IN VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA", "NET WEIGHT 12 OUNCES", "LARGE BOX 12 OZS"domestic laundry essentials, cotton clothing preparations, household starch "crisp and neat appearances.

These enveloped have been used by the A.N.Z. Bank as a convenient way of storing coins. The one containing threepences is pre-decimal currency (1966) and other (five cents) is post 1966. The envelopes would have been used in all ANZ banks. The ANZ Bank was formed in 1951 when the Bank of Australasia merged with the Union Bank. The Bank of Australasia was established in Warrnambool in 1854 and in 1953 the Bank of Australasia and the Union Bank closed and the ANZ bank opened in Timor Street. Today a branch of the ANZ bank is in Liebig Street. These envelopes are of minor interest as examples of the currencies and banking procedures of yesteryear. These are two paper envelopes, glued at the ends, one for holding five cent coins and the other for threepenny coins. Typewriters pre dated computers. This typewriter was possibly used in an office or at home. It was used with an inked tape which may have been only black or had both red and black ink along it. Multiple copies of the material being typed were done using carbon paper inserted between sheets of paper. The original paper was easily identified.Used in the Kiewa Valley.Small grey metal typewriter with deep green key board with gold letters on top.The margin rod is marked in inches and it has keys for pounds, dollars and cents, inches and fractions. The loading of A4 paper is done manually. The keys that hit the paper are stainless steel. The keyboard slopes up to the top which is partially hollow with a gap that exposes the stainless steel keys. The cylinder is at the top and at the back with control knobs on each side. This typewriter has 2 sheets of paper with carbon paper between them to demonstrate how copies were made (but there isn't an inked tape in it so the copies aren't authentic)Centre front: "Royal" Letters of the alphabet on the keys.
