St. Kilda was declared to be a City on 8 September, 1890 and the official public Proclamation ceremony and celebration to mark its elevation from a Borough to a City was on 2nd December, 1890. Around 3,000 local school children joined in the celebrations. Brighton Road State School is now known as St Kilda Primary School and dates back to 1 January 1875. The fabric and printing indicates that the ribbon is an original rather than a reproduction. Gold coloured ribbon with frayed edge, printed in blue. (Wikipedia) On 11 December, General Edmund Allenby humbly entered the Old City on foot through the Jaffa Gate instead of horse or vehicles to show respect for the holy city. He was the first Christian in many centuries to control Jerusalem, which is a very important site for many faiths. The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, David Lloyd George described the capture as "a Christmas present for the British people".
