Public lectures were a common activity in Bacchus Marsh in the early 1900s. These were usually held in the Mechanics Institute Hall in Main Street, or in the Australian Natives Association (ANA) Hall also in Main Street Bacchus Marsh. This ticket is a typical example of the elaborate design used for invitations at this time. This lecture was promoted as an 'illustrated lecture'. In this instance it was according to contemporary newspaper reporting a lecture which included a series of 'lantern views'. These were pictures—paintings, prints, or photographs—on transparent plates (usually made of glass), and were then projected for viewing through an image projector commonly called a 'magic lantern'. Printed ticket on card. Rectangular shape.public lectures, bacchus marsh mechanics institute, mechanics institutes, ephemera bacchus marsh

The papers gathered for this work, one of two volumes, focus on journeys of Thomas Brassey (1836-1918) who was born and educated in England. They include the period 1862 to 1894, before he accepted the position of Governor of Victori, Australia, in 1895. During that time, he'd won a seat in parliament, which he held for 18 years, and for periods was a civil lord and parliamentary secretary for the Admiralty. He was passionate about the sea and addressed his naval and maritime concerns in public lectures, letters, pamphlets and books. He was also for a time lord-in-waiting to Queen Victoria and president of the Institute of Naval Architects. This book is from Flagstaff Hill's ‘Pattison Collection’, a collection of books and records that was originally owned by the Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute, which was founded in Warrnambool in 1853. It was edited by Captain S. Eardley-Wilmot, and published by Longmans, Green and Co. of London. The Longmans, Green and Co. was originally founded in 1724 in London by Thomas Longman under the name Longman. In August of that year, he bought the two shops and goods of William Taylor and set up his publishing house there at 39 Paternoster Row. The shops were called Black Swan and Ship, and it is said that the 'ship' sign was the inspiration for Longman's Logo. After many changes of name and management, the firm was incorporated in 1926 as Longmans, Green & Co. Pty Ltd. The firm was acquired by Pearson in 1968 and was known as Pearson Longman or Pearson PLC. The book is an account of travels from 1862 to 1894 of Lord Thomas Brassey, giving first-hand experiences of 19th century travel. Brassey was a former Governor of Victoria before Australia’s Federation. Brassey was passionate about naval and maritime matters in public and government capacities. The work is important for its connection with the publisher Longmans, Green and Co., of London, a firm that has been established for over two centuries, renowned for publishing encyclopedias, dictionaries, books on English grammar, textbooks, poetry, reference books, novels, magazines and more. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance.Papers and Addresses Naval and Maritime from 1871 to 1893 Vol 2 Author: Lord Brassey Arranged and Edited Captain S. This photograph depicts the entrance to the Burke Museum in Beechworth, most likely in 1980. The building was originally established as the Beechworth Athenaeum in 1857 to provide a lecture hall and reading room at the peak of the gold rush. In 1859, it became the Beechworth Public Library, which is why the writing embossed above the main entry says 'Library' rather than 'Museum'. The building was turned into a museum and renamed the Robert O'Hara Burke Memorial Museum in 1863 in honour of Robert O'Hara Burke, former Police Superindendent of Beechworth who died in 1861 on the Burke and Wills expedition. The Burke Museum has been in almost continual operation since that time. In the 1970s, the building underwent renovations to create several verandas, though the main façade visible in this photograph remained as it was when originally built. The Burke Museum currently contains over 30,000 individual objects, including the Gold Rush era items and the Ned Kelly collection advertised on the a-frame in the photograph. The photograph itself is also part of the Burke Museum collection. The Burke Museum itself is very significant to Victorian history. It is on both the Victorian Heritage Register and is part of the National Trust due to its relevance to the history of the Gold Rush period, its architectural features, and its significant collection. Photographs of it throughout its history are an important part of telling the museum's story. This photograph in particular highlights what the museum staff believed would be appealing to a 1980s public, evident by the A-frame advertising board.A black and white rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper.Top right text: 5147. The Betrothed Lovers Author: Alessandro Manzoni Publisher: Ward Lock & Co Date: 1889 Further Information: Edited by G.T.BettanyfictionThe subject novel is regarded as a Victorian literary artifact of a masterpiece of European literature. The Betrothed Lovers is the English translation of I Promessi Sposi (originally published in 1827), widely considered the most famous and influential Italian novel ever written. Set in northern Italy in 1628 during the oppressive era of Spanish rule, the story follows two young silk weavers, Renzo and Lucia, who are deeply in love and wish to marry. Their plans are cruelly shattered by a tyrannical local baron, Don Rodrigo, who wants Lucia for himself and forces the couple to flee. The epic narrative follows their separate, perilous journeys through a landscape torn apart by war, political corruption, famine, and a devastating outbreak of the Bubonic Plague in Milan. This work is renowned for its deep psychological realism, social critique, and profound exploration of religious faith and divine providence.flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked coast, flagstaff hill maritime museum, maritime museum, shipwreck coast, flagstaff hill maritime village, great ocean road, book, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, the betrothed lovers, allessandro manzoni, g.t.bettany

A Mechanics’ Institute hall was constructed in 1885 and opened as Orbost's first library. It was situated in Browning Street, Orbost. The hall is still in use today as a community venue. Mechanics' Institutes are the forerunners of public libraries and adult education in Australia. The origin of mechanics' institutes is attributed to Dr George Birkbeck, who in 1799 gave a series of free lectures for the working men of Glasgow. At the time, 'mechanic' meant artisan, tradesman or working man. The movement spread quickly throughout the British Empire. The first Victorian Mechanics' Institute was the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute established in 1839. From the 1850s, Mechanics' Institutes quickly spread throughout Victoria wherever a hall or library, or a school was needed. This ledger was used by the Orbost Mechanics' Institute from 1884 until 1926. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The Mechanics' Institute was a very early feature of the Orbost community. The building became a community facility used for a variety of essential civic needs in particular a library. It also provided a suitable venue for community social requirements and functions.A heavy minute book with faded black covers and brown binding. Boyd questions the public's and architect's architectural taste - especially developing a style that would define Australian Architecture. He addresses the lack of commissioning of Modern Architects while Modern Architecture became the main preference in architecture 30 years prior to the written text. Frustrations towards people selecting styles that are 'familiar' rather than trying to be 'avant-garde'. Otherwise, Boyd challenges architects looking towards American Architecture as precedents. This appears to be a unpublished lecture. ADB entry: http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/langham-frederick-3987 Frederick Langham (1833-1903), Wesleyan missionary, was born on 24 April 1833 at Launceston, Van Diemen's Land, son of Samuel Langham, builder, and his wife Eliza, née Robinson. Nurtured in a Methodist home he attended the Paterson Street Sunday school and was 'converted' under the ministry of Rev. William Butters. In 1847 the family moved to Victoria where Langham joined the Fitzroy Church. After two years training as a teacher in Britain he returned to Melbourne and on 16 November 1854 at Richmond married Ann Elizabeth Knight. In January 1855 Langham became headmaster of the Wesleyan Denominational School at Barker Street, Castlemaine, where he was a contemporary of Shirley Baker at the other Wesleyan school. Influenced by Rev. Thomas Raston to consider missionary work, Langham was prepared for the ministry by Rev. John Harcourt and in 1858 was received into the Victorian Conference. He was appointed to Fiji where he arrived in June. Langham served at Lakemba in 1858-63, Bau in 1864-66 and Viwa in 1868-70. As one of the assertive 'colonial young men', he was resented at first by Rev. James Calvert and his colleagues, but Langham soon dominated the mission and was chairman of the Fiji district in 1869-94. From 1871 he lived at Bau where he won repute among Methodists as King Cakobau's adviser. Although his policies did not please all the missionaries, they accepted him as their spokesman. Believing himself the champion of the Fijians he encouraged annexation by Britain, but often nettled the colonial administrators by his paternalism and lack of imagination. To his colleagues he was 'Father' Langham and Sir Arthur Gordon referred to him as 'The Cardinal'. In 1874-75 and 1890 Langham and his wife visited Melbourne mainly for their health. They finally left Fiji in April 1895 and lived in Sydney where Langham worked on the revision of the Fijian Bible. Though always reluctant in Australia to travel on deputationary work, he identified himself with the Orange cause and was easily persuaded to give anti-Catholic missionary lectures, which involved him in public controversy with Cardinal Patrick Moran. In 1898 Langham went to England to see his New Testament through the press. The subsequent burning of some testaments at the Roman Catholic mission at Namosi received much publicity in Australia. Langham's wife had helped his revision and was author of many Fijian hymns. Their adopted (European) daughter Annie Langham Lindsay died on 21 December 1901, just before the revised Old Testament was completed. His wife did not recover from this shock and died on 5 January 1902. Langham became a supernumerary in 1901 and travelled on deputationary work in Britain, mainly for the British and Foreign Bible Society, of which he was a life governor. He also shared in the 'simultaneous mission' of the Evangelical churches. In addition to the Fijian Bible he had published other works in Fijian, some in conjunction with other authors. Recommended by Sir William MacGregor, Langham was awarded a doctorate of divinity by the University of Glasgow. He died at Wilton Villa, Albion Grove, Hackney, on 21 June 1903 and was buried in Abney Park cemetery. Although he bequeathed a 'cannibal fork with human bone attached' to a sister in Melbourne, the rest of his Fijian collection was sold. He instructed his trustees to destroy his journals and correspondence but many of his original letters are in other collections. Physically impressive with leonine hair and beard, Langham cut his missionary role in the cloth of the schoolmaster. As a disciplinarian his punishments were severe but tempered with justice; he once insisted on being caned by a wrongfully punished boy. His relentless energy and simple piety won him renown as a great missionary by his denomination and those of the religious public familiar with the romanticized version of his career.
