A widows' function, that involved a raffle, (some of the same ladies are in 00654 and 00655). The lady drawing the raffle is Inez Bruce / President, and the lady holding the prize may be Joan Miller. The photo was featured in the July 1992 Widows Newsletter and explains the day was the 'Great Tea Party' in June 1992 when the widows rooms were opened after 9 months of renovations. Cakes were donated by Fergusson Plarre. In the 1990s Legacy was supported by generous donations from Fergusson Plarre Bakehouse with cakes often donated for events and the annual fete. This portion of a raffle ticket is from a raffle conducted by the Warrnambool Lions Club in 1971. The proceeds went towards the building fund of a Warrnambool kindergarten which is at 31 Gladstone Street, Warrnambool and is today known as the Lions Hopkins Kindergarten. The Warrnambool Lions Club was formed in 1959 and was chartered in May 1960. At the time the charter presentation was the largest charter night gathering ever held in Australia (210 people present). The Warrnambool Lions Club continues to operate as a service club. The prize of an Australian flag was donated by H.James. Henry James (1860-1932) was a well-known identity in the Orbost district.He was a stock agent and auctioneer who helped to establish the seed bean industry in Orbost. He was the second secretary of the Snowy River Shipping Co. as well as a shire councillor and prominent member of MUIOOF. In 1904 an The Worn Out Miners Art Union was formed to raise money for Watson's Sustentation Fund. This state-wide fund raised money to provided support for miners and at this time were supporting 200 miners. The Art Union boasted 100 hundred prizes ranging from 1000 pounds down to 10/6. The Sandhurst No. 1 Fire brigade, the oldest brigade in Bendigo having been formed in 1855, was selling raffle tickets on behalf of the Art Union. The unused P.M. Diggers raffle book was found behind the mantlepiece when the donor was renovating 128 Evans Street, Port Melbourne. The Melbourne Cup Effort raffle was to be drawn on the 31st of October 1968. First prize was to the value of $300 while 4th prize was a mere $4.00.
