Letter from Ellison, Hewison & O'Collins Solicitors, Melbourne to the Shire of Whittlesea in reponse to a request for the names and addresses of the purchasers of blocks of land on the Station Entrance Estate and Railway Platform Estate, Thomastown. Both estates where originally subdived and sold in the mid 1920s. The collection includes a letter, a list of owners and their address details and the lot they own, and plans of both estates, which have been cut out of the original estate sale posters. Railway Platform Barrier Crowd control on railway platforms was a necessity during peak times. At times it may have been necessary to direct passengers to a certain exit or from a certain entrance on a railway platform. Where able, on occasions, two trains may have to use the one platform to ensure trains depart efficiently. To ensure the public entrain on the correct train it could be necessary to divide the platform by using a platform barrier. The barriers made of wood and steel were easily moved by platform staff and provided a substantial barrier on the railway platform. Ballarat Railway Station opened on 11 April 1862. Most of the 19th century architectural features of the railway station are intact. Its signal boxes and goods sheds are preserved, and it is one of only three stations in Victoria to have had a 19th-century train shed. In 1893 Harry Crowther Slingsby founded the company the family firm was at first wholesale bottlers and had established themselves in Bradford, England, later they had a branch in London. Harry Crowther Slingsby began to look into the invention of labor-saving devices for the company. He had recognised that working practices in the local factories relied heavily on manual hauling and gravity for the movement of raw materials and products from floor to floor. However, this did not solve the problem of moving items horizontally around large buildings. Slingsby then set about creating robust trucks and trolleys to move heavy loads with relative ease. Different designs were created for different purposes sack trolleys for moving large sacks of flour, sugar and dried fruit around grocery stores; high wheeled flat carts towed by one or two people; trucks fitted with wicker baskets carried fibers around textile mills and railway platform trolley to move luggage. The company is still in existence today manufacturing many different types of products.An item from the early to mid 20th century connected with railway memorabilia and a company that had humble beginnings to become today a leading UK manufacture. Situated at 965 Main Road adjacent to the Eltham Railway Station, the Country Art Store was originally a hairdresser and Tattersalls agency In 1968 Pam Robinson and Caroline Shenton opened a small shop on the corner of Main Road and Napoleon Street. Four months later a damaged fire hyrdant flooded the store and ruined all their stock. The pair moved to the former hardresser shop at 965 Main Road, adjacent to the Eltham Railway Station, opposite the Stationmaster's house and opened the Country Art Store and adjacent gallery. At the time the only other shop selling pottery was the Potters Cottage in Warrandyte. During the 1970s the gallery was the Wiregrass Gallery. In 1993, after 25 years operating the Country Art Store, the pair decided to sell up and move to warmer climates. During the course of their business a number of craft shops and galleries opened and closed in Eltham. One such shop was Bimbadeen, next to Ansell and Muir's chicken shop opposite Eltham Lower Park. That business run by Don Brown, then a local artist was taken over as River Clay run by Leo Haanappel and Coeny Dommers but ultimately sat in a flood plain and was demolished. When the Country Art Store became available in 1993, Leo Haanappel and Coeny Dommers took it over. The premises became Platform 3095 cafe around 2015.Old Property at Eltha Station E.
