This is a set of 12 photographs of 4th Field Survey Squadron’s CPL John Ratcliffe setting a world record for an exercise routine comprising push-ups, sit-ups and double back-arches at Keswick Barracks, Adelaide in November 1986. A newspaper article of unknown origin titled “John sets world’s best time in routine” was published reporting the achievement. The article reported: “Corporal John Ratcliffe has smashed his personal best time, his greatest expectations and the 16-year-old Australian record for a push-up, sit-up and double back-arch routine. Corporal Ratcliffe, 37, set a world record by doing 1232 push-ups (clapping his chest with his hands between each one), 1936 back-arches and 440 sit-ups in one hour, 16 minutes and 29 seconds yesterday. Officials representing the Guinness Book of Records were present and passed his effort. The record was achieved by repeating a set of 14 push-ups, 22 double back-arches and 5 sit-ups, 88 times. The Australian record for the same routine was set in 1970 in the time of 1 hour 41 minutes. CPL Ratcliffe beat his personal best time by 13 minutes. “I could not do it without them” CPL Ratcliffe said of the crowd. Nearing the end of the routine when he was tiring, the crowd of more than 100 clapped and chanted encouragement. CPL Ratcliffe, who works in the Army’s surveying department, said the most important aspect of the exercise was raising money for Legacy, not getting his name in the record books.” This achievement was also reported in the Army Newspaper dated 11th Dec 1986. A dispensation is a formal document that grants permission to establish and operate a local 'lodge' within the organisation. In this case is associated with Manchester Unity Friendly Society, a major branch of the Odd Fellows. The Independent Order of Odd Fellows is a non-political, non-sectarian fraternal organisation founded in Baltimore,Maryland, USA in 1819 dedicated to helping those in need. The framed dispensation was meant for permanent display within meetings halls. Mr William French was a Cornishman who arrived from Cornwall to the colonies in 1849. He was the owner and licencee of the Manchester Arms Hotel, in Long Gully. Record indicate the first Lodge NO. 4774 Odd Fellows meeting was held in this establishment. The highly decorated document announces the dispensation from Manchester Unity for the Independant Order of Oddfellows Loyal Albert Lodge no.4774 to be held at the house of Brother William French in Bendigo giving him to right to appoint officers for executing the business of the lodge. When the Natimuk Brass Band formed in 1886, practice meetings were done at band members homes until 1908 when they began practicing at the Mechanics Institute Hall (now the Natimuk and District Soldiers Memorial Hall [101 Main Street]. Between 1930-1947 the band went into due to their instruments being destroyed in Ratcliffe’s Store fire [87 Main Street]. When they reformed a credit balance was held of two shillings & six pence (£0-2-6). From 1947 to 1959, band practice was conducted at KNIGHT’s former grocery business [54-56 Main Street]. The Natimuk Fire Brigade relocated to a new building in 1959 therefore vacating their old premises at 91 Main Street to make way for the band’s first and final home until December 2026 when the band ceased after 140 years of dedication to Natimuk and the district. This sign has been hanging on the building since 1959 and pulled down in 2026natimuk brass band, enterainment, community event, music, knight, mechanics institute

Rev. Peter Thompson (1847 - 1909) was Superintendent of the East End Wesleyan Mission. Entered the Wesleyan ministry in 1871. Died 1909. The second son of a Lancashire farmer, Peter grew up in a tee-total Methodist household with a rather austere father and a saintly mother. He trained at Didsbury Wesleyan College where he was, by all accounts, a brilliant student. He was stationed in Ulverston and then Huddersfield (by 1876). By 1881 Peter had married and was Minister at Wood Green. He and his wife, Mary, do not appear to have had any children. They spent some years in Redhill and then, following the decision of Conference in 1885 to establish the London Wesleyan Methodist Mission, Peter was sent to the East End of London to take charge of the almost defunct St George’s Wesleyan Chapel. His work as a slum missionary was so successful that soon larger premises were required. In addition the mission took over a ‘most undesirable’ public house (The White Swan on Ratcliffe Highway) and later, in 1891, the Mahogany Bar. In 1898 he was interviewed by Charles Booth as part of Booth’s survey of London. Peter died after a long illness in 1909 having served 24 years in East London, one of the best known and loved Wesleyan ministers of his time.
