This work is a serigraph (screenprint) on cartridge paper using blue oil based inks of the 'Brolga' (Australian Crane); a common, gregarious wetland bird species of tropical and south-eastern Australia and New Guinea / It is a tall, upright bird with a small head, long beak, slender neck and long legs / The pose of the bird represents their stance when calling out to their mate, which sounds like a loud trumpet / The decorative markings on the bird's plumage is from the traditional carved/etched Gunnai shields from Gippsland Eastern Victoria, which is where Thomas' people are from. Underneath 'Brolga', on slant, lower right in greylead pencil (?) handwritten artist signature and language group "Ray Thomas - GUNNAI"

"This work is about paying homage to our First Nation Ancestors here in the south east corner of Australia. The symmetrical and asymmetrical lines reflects the intricate designs that were not only meticulously carved onto our shields, but these markings were also etched into the inner side of possum skin cloaks. These cloaks were not only to keep the wearer warm during winter, but were a huge part of an ancient traditional practice in telling and maintaining stories of the person that made his or her cloak. Each individual cloak was unique to that persons life.  At the corner section l have paid homage to William Barak, esteemed senior Wurundjeri Elder (circa 1830s - 1901). I have referenced some figures that he had painted around the turn of last century. His work is held in the Victorian Museum collection and are a record of the Wurundjeri people’s life before the incursion of the Europeans." - Ray Thomas A large, vibrant painted bas relief mural. The mural was created by local Indigenous artist, Ray Thomas (born Melbourne 1960, Gunnai, Brabrawooloong), and is an iconographic recognition of ancient lineage and celebrates a respect for people and country. Located at Northcote Civic Square, 189 High St, Northcote VIC 3070.

"Painting stories like this means a lot to me, because that is part of my identity, going right back to the traditional, and painting those stories means everybody knows them and shows my connection to country. The painting, 'Bimba Dowera', examines the story of the origin of fire. The story is that there were two old women who kept firesticks and would not share them. People wondered how to get fire from these sticks. One day, a small boy decided to retrieve the fire sticks for everyone to use. He followed the old women, and they invited him to camp with them. While they were asleep, he took the fire sticks and ran away." - Ray Thomas Thomas depicts the young boy fleeing from the camp. In the foreground is a Diamond Firetail finch, which the boy later became. In Gunnai language, Bimba Dowera, means 'Shoot out, Fire'. Artist Bio Ray comes from the Gunnai people and is mainly self-taught, he became involved in painting through and introduction to the late Lin Onus in the early 70’s. Since the mid 80’s Ray has been researching his Gunnai peoples' myths, legends and traditional designs and markings held in the archives of museums. Of significant influence and inspiration has been the work and career of the late Lin Onus around 1974, during what he called his ‘landscape’ days. From this meeting, a spark was ignited in Ray to paint the country in the western landscape tradition. His work has developed and evolved into a more personal style that combines contemporary sensibility, incorporating traditional Gunnai designs and imagery. His new works display an extraordinary technical skill level and a mastery of both oils and acrylics, but most importantly, they belie a confidence and serenity of a mature artist, content in his achievement of learning culture to the extent that he is now able to show his people’s story through his art for all to see.

The Koori Mural was designed by artist Megan Evans in consultation with a committee from the Aborigines Advancement League consisting of the late Lin Onus, the late Molly Dyer, the late Ron Johnson and the late Elizabeth Hoffman. It was painted by Evans and renowned Aboriginal artist Ray Thomas along with Ian Johnson, Millie Yarram, Les Griggs, Elaine Trott and a number of volunteers. The mural has considerable historical and cultural significance and refers to the experiences of the the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, from early colonial history to the more recent struggle for social justice. In 2014 the mural was replicated onto a vinyl banner and installed at its current site. The Northcote Koori Mural was originally located on Council land in High Street, Northcote, opposite the Northcote Town Hall. A huge, free-standing wall was built specifically to accommodate the mural which was painted on site. The land on which the mural was housed was later sold, however, and the mural was relocated to the Aborigines Advancement League in St. Georges Road, Thornbury. Conservation work in 2014 and original panels decommissioned and vinyl banner hung in its place (with Total Outdoor Media). In 2015 solar lights were installed along with landscaping to the front of the mural and a plaque depicting the history on the mural.

Henry Sutton is a talented world-wide accepted inventor with inventions relating to the telephone, photography, wireless, cars, motorcycles, and bicycles as well as many more inventions. Henry was also one of four brothers that ran the Sutton's Music Store after the death of their Father Richard Sutton. He performed on the University's historic Erard Grand Concert piano on stage in Founders Hall, describing it as "absolutely amazing.' The instrument was 93 years old and hadn't been played for more than eighty years. An audience of 500 were entertained with pieces by Schubert and Bach for the first half of the program and Waltzes, Mazurkas, and Polonaises by Chopin after the interval. A feature of the show is Lola's celebrated Spider Dance which was acknowledged many years ago by the crowd throwing gold nuggets onto the stage.
