Ian Darnton Watson was a member of a prominent family of civic leaders in Wodonga. He was born on 6th July 1925 in Albury, the first son of Kenneth Darnton Watson and Phyllis Lenore Emily Austin. He completed his primary education at Albury Grammar School, and later became a boarder at Melbourne Church of England Grammar School. He enlisted for military service at Albury on 25th January 1944 and commenced full time service on 8th February 1944 at Royal Park in Melbourne, Victoria and was allocated to the 2nd Medium Artillery Regiment. He embarked on overseas service in Borneo on 30th July 1945 and disembarked in Australia on 15th April 1947 after serving with the Australian occupation forces in Japan. Mr Watson was discharged on 22nd April 1947 at which time he was a member of the Australian 2nd Medical Regiment. On discharge he returned home to help his father farm his property, de Kerilleau in Wodonga which was classified by the National Trust in 1974. Ian described his father, Kenneth as a hardworking, practical man, who for two years from 1929 - 1931, had been the Wodonga Shire President. Cr K. D. Watson was again elected to the Council in 1943 and served until he died in October 1951. In March 1957, he married Miss Lesley Buttfield, of Sydney, NSW. They had three children, Fiona, John and Rowena. John was later to become a member of Wodonga Council and served as Mayor. Ian was President of the RSSAILA (Returned Sailor's, Soldier's and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia) branch at Wodonga from 1953 to 1955 and remained as a member after that time. The League was renamed to the Returned Services League in 1965. Corporal Walter Ardern was the third son of Mr and Mrs James Ardern of Wodonga Estate. He enlisted on 5th October 1914 and left Australia during December of 1914 as a member of the 7th regiment of the Australian Light Horse. The regiment landed in Egypt on 1st February 1915 where they stayed for about three months. He then left Egypt with a machine gun section for Gallipoli, and took part in activities there within a week of the first Anzac landing. During the following four months Corporal Ardern was engaged in the hottest fighting on the Peninsula. He escaped sickness and wounds until the attack at Lone Pine in August 1915, at which he was wounded in the thigh, neck and leg. He was removed to Cottnera Hospital, in Malta, where he was invalided for a few weeks. He was then moved to King George's Hospital in London, where he remained for the follow eight months. On recovery Walter was transferred to the Second Machine Gun Squadron, and immediately embarked for the Sinai Peninsula, where he was kept actively engaged combating the Turks. He participated in the battle of Romani, in which terrific losses were inflicted, on the Turkish army. Shortly before Christmas of 1916 his squadron received instructions to proceed to Palestine, where he remained until embarking for Australia on 31 December 1918. Walter was discharged on 28th March 1919. The certificate signified that the officials and ratepayers of the Wodonga community recognised and appreciated his service. It was signed by S. T. Parker, Shire President and R. H. James Stewart Noel Harris was born in Rutherglen on 21 March 1905 to John Richards Harris and Jessie Lily nee Prentice. His father was a doctor in Rutherglen. John later entered politics and was knighted for his services in May 1937. After finishing his secondary schooling James (Stewart) Harris moved to Melbourne to study law, becoming a resident of Trinity College in 1925 and rising to become Senior Student in his final year, 1928-29. He enlisted in the Air Force Cadets at Point Cook in 1925 and transferred to the Air Force Reserve in 1930. On 7th October 1940 James transferred to active service as a Flight Officer. He worked his way up the ranks, being appointed Wing Commander in 1944. He also served as Chief Instructor of the RAAF School of Administration, receiving the RAAF Long Service Commendation. The RAAF School of Administration and Special Duties had moved from Ascot Vale to Trinity College in 1942 meaning that James Harris' service career had returned to the place it began in 1925. In 1945 he requested to be transferred back to the Reserve so that he could resume his civilian life. On discharge, James returned to Wodonga and resumed his legal career. In the early 1930s he had joined the legal practice of Mr. Edmondstone which had opened for business in High Street, Wodonga in 1886. The practice continued to develop and in 1966 was joined by Lou Lieberman, becoming known as “Harris Lieberman & Co”. Harris Lieberman still operates in Wodonga and Albury. James Stewart Noel Harris died in Wodonga on 30th November 1978.This item is significant because it recognises the War Service of a prominent citizen of Wodonga.A colour printed certificate presented to James S. The Fred Rochow Railways Collection incorporates photos related to the operation of the Wodonga Railway Station including different types of trains and railways staff C. 1930 – 1990. It was donated to the Wodonga Historical Society by Fred Rochow, a railwayman who spent many years based in Wodonga. He joined the Victorian Railways on 17th June l947 and retired in 1988. For some time, he was a member of the Australian Federated Union of Locomotive Enginemen and served a term as a member of the Trades Hall Council. He had an extensive knowledge of the struggles that took place to achieve better conditions for railway workers. Fred worked for many years as a fireman and then worked his way up the ranks to driver, experiencing many changes from the days of steam locomotives through to diesel trains, locomotives and even the modern XPT train. He worked throughout Victoria at different stages of his career, with his final working years focused on the northeast of Victoria and the Albury to Melbourne line. After his retirement, Fred continued to share his love of steam miniature trains with the community.This collection has local and statewide significance as it captures images of trains, locomotives and personnel who operated the railway services in Wodonga and throughout Northeast Victoria. The railways played a critical role in opening up Victoria and connecting Australia for trade, business, social communication and transport. Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle D.S.O., originally of St Kilda, served in the British Army with the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) for his leadership and gallantry. He died on 30 July 1919 at the age of 33 after a long illness and is buried at Brighton Cemetery. An article in The Argus newspaper of 6 August 1917 contained the following report: "A cable message received on Friday last announced that the D.S.O. had been awarded to Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle, of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Captain Mickle is the elder son of Mr D. Mickle, of Marine parade St. Kilda, and was born in that suburb. He was educated at Queen's College, and after qualifying as a metallurgist, studied at the Melbourne University for three years. There he won the Grimwade Prize and other distinctions. On the outbreak of war Captain Mickle held a responsible position on the Burmah mines. He enlisted in England, and received a commission. He saw much fighting on the Somme, and in the batter of Arras, where he commanded a heavy trench mortar brigade attached to a Highland division. In a letter referring to the last-mentioned battle he wrote:- "My little commando has of late been quite in the limelight. Two of my officers received M.C.'s, one was mentioned in despatches, and five of the N.C.O.'s and men received military medals." Most British and Commonwealth soldiers who served in World War I were awarded these three medals. The 1914-15 Star was awarded for service on the establishment of a unit in a theatre of war. It was never issued singly; recipients also received the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. The British War Medal was awarded to those who had entered a theatre of war on duty, or served overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. The Victory Medal commemorated the victory of the Allied Forces. Each nation designed their own medal but used the same ribbon. Australians received the medal issued by Great Britain. The combination of the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal were popularly dubbed 'Pip, Sqeak and Wilfred' after cartoon characters of the time. John (Jack) Dudley Cullen was the first person from St Kilda to enlist in World War I. He lived at 23 Argyle Street (now Waterloo Crescent), St Kilda. An electrician with three years service with the militia behind him, Jack enlisted on 14 August 1914 at the age of 21. By 20 October that year he was sailing to Egypt on the HMAT Shropshire as a member of the 5th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. He served in the Middle East for a short time before being hospitalised with enteric fever and returning home to Australia. After recovering, Jack undertook permanent guard duties at Broadmeadows Training Camp until October 1916, when he went to England with the 118th Howitzer Battery on the HMAT Aeneas. He again returned to Australia on health grounds, this time suffering a bronchial condition, and was discharged in June 1918. The inscription '2/F.A. BDE A.I.F.' refers to the '2nd Field Artillery Brigade Australian Imperial Forces'.A gold coloured star medal (1914-15 Star), a round silver medal (British War Medal), and a round bronze medal (Victory Medal), joined by different multi-coloured ribbons to a bar.1914-15 Star: The medal is a four-point star in bright bronze with a crown at the top. In 2005, to mark the 60th anniversary of the end of WWII, the Australian Government presented the medallion to Veterans who served in 1939-1945. Tribute medallions were presented to all 1914 enlistees from St Kilda by the citizens of St Kilda. Two presentations were held, one in November 1918 (98 recipients) and one in May 1919 (90 recipients). Both were organised by the St Kilda Patriotic Committee and held at the St Kilda Town Hall. The Wodonga line and train station opened in November 1873 when the section of the line from Wangaratta was completed. The expansion of the railways to the northeast of Victoria occurred after the Victorian Government took over the railways in 1867 and the trains serviced large towns such as Seymour, Wangaratta and Wodonga, as well as smaller towns along the way. The north- east train line to Wodonga remained a significant factor in the development of Wodonga as a rural city in the 20th century. The Past Officers Certificate has local significance as it was presented to Wodonga resident, Lachlan McEachern, who was President of the Wodonga Sub-Branch of the Victorian Branch of the Australian Railways Union, and there are other items that belonged to Mr Eachern in the collection of the Wodonga Historical Society. It also has wider significance as an example of a Past Officers certificate dated to the 1920s, as other examples in the collection of Museums Victoria are later and are dated to the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s.
