This box was donated by Mary Gilbert who was the Orbost Red Cross Superintendent. Australian women's efforts on the home front to support the nation during WWI and WWII were monumental. They worked tirelessly for Red Cross in response to the national emergency, serving the humanitarian needs of the nation. Women produced millions of pounds worth of in-kind support through volunteer labour and goods, sending an astonishing volume of goods overseas to servicemen and prisoners of war. They knitted and sewed socks, towels and vests for soldiers.A black Red Cross box containing training cards, forms and badges. Although the Beenak Post Office officially closed on 31 August 1951, the Mail Box continued to be used until 1976. The history of Beenak (the town that never was) is part of the Yarra Valley Ranges, and this picture tells the story of the historic MailboxBlack and White Picture of the original Beenak Post Office Letter Box, used for collecting mail during the Beenak Sawmilling operations. The Friends of Kurth Kiln have errected a Commemorative Plaque on site next to the huge gum tree that still carries the scar where the the mail box had been mounted. A full scale replica of the box has been fitted to the shed at Kurth Kiln, made and painted by Henk Bouck under the supervision of ex PMG officer John Waghorn beenak, post office

Cliff Beauglehole was an orchardist at Portland, Victoria, who throughout hislife took an intense interest in the plants of Victoria. This ledger was used by the Shire of Orbost pound keeper from 1906 - 1914. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The shire covered an area of 9,347 square kilometres and existed from 1892 until 1994 when it became part of the East Gippsland Shire Council. Orbost was at first included in the Bairnsdale Shire from 1882 and was later part of the Tambo Shire. Because of travelling distances the Croajingalong Shire was created in 1892 (name changed to Orbost Shire 17.2.1893 with James Cameron as the first Shire President. In 1994 it amalgamated to become part of East Gippsland Shire Council. This book records the impounding of animals which have been found wandering on local roads or trespassing on land. Many are farm animals. Impounded animals were either claimed by their owners after payment of a fee or if unclaimed , they were sold. The Orbost Pound was situated on Martin Street.This book is a record of a practice which was necessary to remove stock which were wandering on local roads or trespassing on neighbours.
