The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. House is commonly spelt as "Payneswicke".From: Glen Eira Heritage Management Plan (1996) by Andrew Ward and Associates "Payneswicke" is locally significant as a prominent and substantially intact villa of its period, distinguished by its cast cement enrichment, unpainted stuccoed surfaces and commanding aspect to the south-west. Its role for a period as home for local builder, Patrick Millane (compare no. 11 Gladstone Parade) is of interest. In 1889, a nine roomed brick house was in the course of erection on the site. The house was completed in 1890 and Millane took up residence. Millane continued as owner/ occupant in 1894. However, in 1899, although Millane still occupied the house, ownership had been taken over by the Land Mortgage Bank. By 1910, Andrew Brown was occupant. Occupancy passed to Edward Brown by 1920 and to Miss A.N. Brown by 1930. The building is the Bulla Community Centre, which replaced an older hall that was situated in the Bulla Sports Ground precinct in Greene Street. 'Glenara' is situated along the Deep Creek at Bulla and was built on an original government grant of land by Walter Clark. His fourth child, Alistair, spent much of his life there and with the help of his gardener, W.Peers, gained world recognition for introducing 150 new rose species which included the Black Boy and Lorraine Lee. The property is Craiglee, which was one of the first vineyards established in Sunbury in 1865 by Stuart Johnson. It is sited on the east bank of Jackson Creek and fronts onto Macedon Street. The original photo is part of an album taken by W.Walls, the front page of which is inscribed "The Hill/Sunbury/April 1897". Whilst most of the photos relate to the environs of the asylum, there are others taken around Sunbury and elsewhere. The original album is held as part of the Mental health Collection. During 2000 this was transferred from Mont Park to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.There are two large two storey buildings with return verandahs built on a clifftop overlooking the sea. The grand building is Rupertswood Mansion which was the Sunbury home of the Clarke family. The foundation stone was laid29th August 1874 by Mrs. W.J. Clarke the first wife of W.J.Clarke. The property along with the Clarke family have been interwoven with Sunbury's history over the decades and remained in the Clarke family until 1922 when H.V. McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame purchased the property. The Salesian Fathers purchased it in 1927 and since that time the property has been a school. Many important events have taken place in Sunbury within the Rupertswood grounds over the years. M.G. Gregor was staying at the Sunbury Presbytery when she wrote a message on the flip side of this postcard to her niece on 23rd June 1912. She may have been employed there as a housekeeper.The Catholic Presbytery was built at a cost of 1315 pounds and opened on 25th February 1912. Father Gallivan was the first priest to reside in the new Presbytery. Built for a client by Albert Harbert in the 1920s. Albert built many local homes. This is a fine example of its style with double gables and return verandah. A black and white photograph of a weatherboard Californian Bungalow style house with a tiled roof. It has an L-shaped verandah with solid pillars decorated with stucco which is also on the chimney. This Daisy Pattern iron lace frieze was registered by the Cochrane foundry North Melbourne and exhibited at the Great Exhibition Melbourne in 1880. One of the most popular patterns used in Eastern Australia the actual foundry where this was cast is unknown but this example adorns the return verandah of Hymettus cottage in Ballarat.

His daughter Edna was the book keeper and typist, Stewart Watson was the salesman and Stanley Phipps (Edith Lunn's father) was the property manager and valuer. When Thomas Watts died in 1914, his daughter took over the running of the business. She married Stewart Watson in 1918. Eventually the name of the business was changed to Bishop and Earl. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The house was built for Dr. Rae in 1880 following his retirement from his medical practice due to ill health. He lived there until his death. Dr. Vance then occupied it for a short time. It was bought by the sisters of St. Joseph in 1890 and formed the nucleus of St. Joseph’s Convent. It was demolished in the early years of the twentieth century, when a new two-storey brick convent was built.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The photo is of a brick residence, built in 1865-66 as a house and surgery for Dr. Rae, a medical practitioner in Bacchus Marsh 1863-1874. Dr. Rae was influential in community affairs as a Justice of the Peace, a member of the Board of Advice of Bacchus Marsh Common School and a President of the Mechanics’ Institute. After ill health forced him to resign his practice, he built the Bungalow in 1880, where he lived until his death. The house was later purchased by William Anderson (c.1880) who named it “Dunglass”. The people in this photograph are probably members of the Anderson family. The house is now used as an Adult Education Centre. The house is of significance as the embodiment of the importance to the community of its influential figures, such as Dr. Rae, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The photo is of a double-fronted brick Classical nineteenth century house with a high hip roof. Two brick chimneys are visible. The left hand bay is set forward, with the central section of the house being set back. A concave return verandah supported by decorative columns runs along the front and side of the house, leading to a separate entry door off the side verandah. On the window set in this door, the word ‘SURGERY’ can be discerned, indicating that this is the entrance to be used by patients. The building features buff-coloured stone quoins and architraves. A white picket fence runs along the front. Ranged along the footpath in front of the fence stands a group of eight young women and girls. This simple rear cottage door at Hymettus built 1900-1901 has been the back door since the early 1900s. Photos in the family collection however, reveal that it was originally the return front verandah door to the dining-room and the transition seems to have occurred about 1910 when a new door was installed for the front verandah to complement the art-nouveau lead light transom and surrounds to the main front entrance. A similar simple glass and two panel cottage door closes off the passage from main passageway to the kitchen and service end of the home so that the home presents as more simple in the service area fittings with more decorative features to the more important front rooms of the home reflecting the progression of style as the family had more money to spend on the home.

Large families were the norm, rather than the exception up to the time of the World wars. perhaps the senseless destruction of those young lives sickened humanity- perhaps the increased taxes and cost of living resulting from the wars caused a necessary reduction in family size. Perhaps the independence won by women as they carried on their daily lives without their men, made mothers say, "Enough" The Warren family farmed the fertile Fyans Creek flats in the Grampian Mountains of Western Victoria. Some say Halls Gap was so named because the bushranger Hall holed up there in the early days. The rugged slopes and hidden gullies could have hidden a whole gang of bushrangers, but little remained undiscovered to a wandering family of 12 children growing up with their flocks and herds grazing the ranges. A tired rider could nod off, safe in the knowledge a trusty stockhorse would plod steadily homeward into the night. Responsibility quickly made youngsters capable and reliable. Then Australia went to war. There were three older brothers, then the girls, then young Frank. All the men went, including Frank. So the girls had to run the farm alone. Their mother had her hands full with the youngsters, still attending school, a daily walk over the mountain to Pomonal and return. But the loss of the men's casual wages from timber cutting and labouring jobs, meant great hardship is some method of earning a cash income had to be devised. Paying guests! That was it. So Myrtle Bank Guest House was born. City folk flocked to the mountain resort. High stepping mountain horses met them at the Stawell raid-head, with the tall and beautiful Warren girls driving them in experienced fashion, their auburn hair sometimes falling from its pins to fly free, as the dray bowled along towards the hills. The would hitch up their skirts to saw and chop wood for the stoves and fires. They milked cows and delivered calves. They shore sheep and trimmed their feet. They mustered their cattle as the seasons rolled by, and the paying guests watched and participated, fascinated. With laughter and song, the girls would wash up in a tin dish, throw on their house clothes to wait on table, sing and play piano, violin, accordion, enjoying the talk of the city and that other world so far away from their mountain home. The simple country menu was a hit, and the homemade bread, butter, jams and preserves, fruit and vegetables sent guests staggering to their armchairs. Picnics, hikes, goodbyes and welcomes blurred as the years of the war dragged by. Bookings were made and remade as the new enterprise became established. Peace was declared. the men returned A whole new building rose with two floors, inviting verandahs and bathrooms. Myrtle Bank would remain a family business all its lifetime, until buried below the Bellfield Dam, by which time more than one the girls had joined their beloved Frank, lost on Flanders Field. It is aesthetically and historically important. "Roseneath's aesthetic value derives from its survival as a substantially intact bi-chromatic brick villa, distinguished by the symmetrical north and south facing bays and by its spacious grounds. Its historical value rests on its comparatively early date and link with Shire councillor William Millar. The choice of bi-chromatic brick, which was highly fashionable at the time, is also of note. It is aesthetically, historically and socially significant. Its aesthetic value is demonstrated by the manner in which the two periods of construction survive, the earliest being of greater architectural interest on account of its tower and facade treatment, the latter phase adopting a common villa form. The importance of the complex is heightened by its intact state and surviving outbuildings. "Heatherbrae's" historical significance lies in its link with locally known business man and Shire of Caulfield councillor, John Charles Holland. This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages.From Victorian Heritage Database citation for Heatherbrae HO46 https://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/120933 as at (28/10/2020) "Heatherbrae" at 73 Neerim Road, Glenhuntly, is a substantial Victorian residential complex made up of two principal construction stages (pre 1876 and c. 1890) and outbuildings including stables. It is aesthetically, historically and socially significant. Its aesthetic value is demonstrated by the manner in which the two periods of construction survive, the earliest being of greater architectural interest on account of its tower and facade treatment, the latter phase adopting a common villa form. The importance of the complex is heightened by its intact state and surviving outbuildings. "Heatherbrae's" historical significance lies in its link with locally known business man and Shire of Caulfield councillor, John Charles Holland.
