The Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA) was the forerunner of today's Returned and Services League (RSL). Formed after the First World War, the organisation was a veterans' association formed by returned servicemen to care for and advocate for the returned service community. The organisation later changed its name to the RSL. This badge is dated to the 1920's by the name of the organisation. Mrs Eve Ainsworth, from Lower Mitcham, South Australia became the first woman delegate of the Returned Services League (RSL). Eve joined the RSL in 1944, after serving at the 2/2nd Australian General Hospital (AGH) at El Kantara during the Middle East campaign in WW2, then at the 2/11th AGH in Warwick, Queensland. She has held office in the Returned Sisters' sub-branch for 28 years in various roles. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. The Victorian Returned Services League(RSL) presented a Festival of Empire and Remembrance. The RSL Memoriall Band played martial airs as all branches of the services and representatives from all parts if the Empire marched down the centre aisle to take their seats on the stage. By accepting the salute at the Wynnum Anzac Day march, Colonel Edna Doig of Manly, probably became the first woman to take an Anzac Day salute in Queensland. The National Returned Services League (RSL) president, Sir William Keys, said Edna was the only Australian wiman he knew of who had taken the salute at Anzac Day marches in the nation. Edna has also accepted it twice before, both in Victoria. These three occasions appear to the the only break in the historically male-santioned tradition, apart from Queen Elizabeth's acceptance if the salute on her visits to Australia. Edna, who was Matron-in-chief and Director of the Australian Army Nursing Service during her 29 year career in the army, was born in Brisbane and joined the army in 1939. Two member badges from the The Returned Sailors, Soldiers Imperial League of Australia (RSSILA). The number 68 on the front could be 1968 as it is detachable and could be updated each year. The badge with 1921 could be the year of membership. The member number is engraved on the rear. The shield design is symbolic of the protection provided to those who wear it. Within the badge, red represents the blood ties of war that exist between comrades; white stands for the purity of the motives in joining the league – to render service without personal gain or ambition; and blue indicates a willingness to serve a comrade anywhere under the blue sky. The wattle represents Australia, with the leek, the rose, the thistle and the shamrock standing for Wales, England, Scotland and Ireland respectively. The RSSILA was the precursor to the Returned Services League (RSL) and provided support for returned servicemen after World War One. Worn by members of the Returned Sailors, Soldiers Imperial League of Australia, those eligible being members of all services, both wars, including nurses, who have returned from active service outside Australia. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM).The RSSILA was an important organisation for ex-servicemen and many Legatees would have been members.Enamel badges from the R.S.S.I.L.A. Vanda Joyce Stiles (nee Johnstone) was born in Mount Gambier, South Australia, in 1916. A woman of remarkable resilience and capability, she was widowed during the Second World War when her husband, Leo Stiles, died as a prisoner of war on the Thai-Burma Railway. Joyce devoted herself to raising their two sons in Mount Gambier, meeting life's challenges with strength, hard work, and determination. Joyce latter settled in Kangaroo Flat, where she continued her association as a valued member of the Country Woman's Association (CWA), the Returned Services League (RSL), and the Senior Citizens. Her service badges represent her long-standing commitment to these organisations and the community she supported so generously. A skilled and creative craftswoman, Joyce was known for her talents in cooking, gardening, knitting, crochet, sewing, and preserving the produce she grew. Vanda Joyce Stiles passed away in 1996 in Kangaroo Flat. She is remembered for her resilience, her creativity, and her lifelong dedication to family, community, and service. Women’s Auxiliaries were formed by mothers, wives, widows, sisters, daughters and aunts of men who served in the First World War. In May1918 a small band of women from the "Friendly Union" organised themselves,under the leadership of Mrs F C Purbrick, into a Women's Auxiliary of the Wangaratta Returned Soldiers Association (RSA). Their first task was to furnish club rooms for the RSA and this was achieved by seeking donations and raising money by selling jams, jellies and posies of violets by selected girls wearing special badges in the street. Over the years funds have been raised through raffles, competitions, street stalls and catering at numerous events to assist the aims of the Returned Services League. In 2018 Wangaratta RSL Women's Auxiliary celebrated its centenary. Women have played a central role in sustaining the activities of ex-service organisations. This sign was used in the Billiard room of the Soldiers Memorial Institute Bendigo RSL. Years ago when the Billiard room had a section divided off for part of a Caretakers Residence it was placed on the internal roof of the residence. It was mainly used at RSL meetings. When the RSL Meetings moved to the B&DRSL Club Inc it was used during the day when the Museum was open. R.S.L. is the Returned and Services League of Australia, a member based charity founded in 1916, and the largest veterans' charity in Australia. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. They have a commemorative service each year on 25th April, ANZAC Day.The Mt Beauty RSL committee members in 1949 is a list of people living in Mt Beauty at the time and who were working as a support team for veterans and their families.
