Somerville's new child-care centre has been named the Annie Sage Child-Care centre. Annie embarked on her nursing career by training at the old Melbourne Hospital, later becoming matron of the Baby Heath Centre Association Training School in Carlton. In World War 2 she was appointed matron-in-chief of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps and saw service in the Middle East and Pacific areas. Colonel Sage was awarded the CBE, the Red Cross Medal and the Florence Nightingale Medal. Later she appointed lady superintendent of the Women's Hospital. Dr Rupert Goodman has spent three years writing his book, 'Our War Nurses', as a "memorial to some of those brave women who have helped in our war years". The book traces the history of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Crorps from 1902 and the Boer War to today. Dr Goodman met with three of the women who inspired the book, Wilma Young, Betty jeffrey and Margaret O'Bryan. In Februrary 142, a ship ferrying 65 Australian nurses from Singapore to Australia was bombed by the Japanese. Wilma Young and Betty Jeffery were at Anzac House to launch 'Our War Nurses', by Rupert Goodman. Together they survived three years in a POW camp during World War 2, after surviving the sinking of the Vyner Brooke in 1942. Of the 65 nurses on board only 24 made it home to Australia. Betty said while nursing discipline and friendship helped her survive the camp, life after they came home wasn't easy either. She spent two years in hospital to "get right again', then wrote her book, 'White Coolies' about her experiences. 'In the Service of Mankind' is the mottos of the Royal Australian Army Nursing Corps, and has stuck to that ideal for seventy years. The corps was born just after Federation, though Australian nurses had already served in the Boer War. Since then, whenever Australia has fought, the nurses have been there to treat the wounded. The Australian Army Nursing Service Reserve, the original title of the Corps, got underway in 1902 as a voluntary body supplying trained nurses in times of emergency.
