In order to provide the necessary historical perspective, the Chronology has been preceded by a Summary of Historical Events. Many matters are here noted for the first time, and, through the courtesy of the Trustees of the Public Library of Victoria, the compiler was allowed to publish in full the diary kept by Sir Richard Bourke during his visit to Port Phillip in March, 1837.
