Beazley, M.P. 1987 This article was presented as a paper to the 1990 Australian War Memorial History Conference to mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of the "Australian Survey Corps" on 1 July 1915. The Corps has since been renamed as the Royal Australian Survey Corps. Lieutenant-Colonel Clem Sargent, Colonel Commandant of the Corps from 1983 to 1993, accepted the challenge and published an account of the history of RA Svy on the occasion of the seventy-fifth anniversary. The Royal Australian Survey Corps, I9I5 - 1990 was first published in October 1990 in the journal of the Military Historical Society of Australia, Sabretache. The article was later published in the Australian Surveyor and is now reproduced as a booklet by kind permission of the author. He was subsequently promoted to Colonel and was Director of the Royal Australian Survey Corp from November 1988 to January 1991, and the honorary position as Colonel Commandant from January 1993 to January 1996. This item was donated by Pte Stanley William Exon (3791206) who was a National Serviceman with the Royal Australian Army Service Corps. He served in Vietnam with 2 Transport Platoon RAASC from April 1968 to January 1969.A coloured photograph in a black/brown frame with a white matt. There is a convoy of eight MK V International Cargo Trucks. The first truck has the number plate (ARN) 171 596 on it as well as the number 24 on the drivers door. At the front of there truck in white is the number 33 and on a yellow circle the number 12 in black. There are several soldiers on top of some of these vehicles. The foreground is either dirt or sand. The Royal Corps of Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RAEME; pronounced Raymee) is a corps of the Australian Army that has responsibility for the maintenance and recovery of all land electrical and mechanical equipment. RAEME has members from both the Australian Regular Army and The Army Reserve. Prior to being given the title of 'Royal', the Australian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (AEME) were raised on 1 December 1942. Some 64 years later, on 1 December 2006, the last independent RAEME Workshop was disbanded. This envelope was specifically produced for the 75th Anniversary of the Royal Australian Survey Corps. This First Day cover envelope was stamped at the Bonegilla Military Post Office on 29 June 1990 in preparation for the Corps birthday on 1 July. The Envelope was stamped in Purple the Survey Corps Colour as apposed to normally being stamped in Black. The School of Military Survey was located at Bonegilla Victoria adjacent to Lake Hume reservoir. This is the second Edition of the "Chrology of the Royal Australian Survey Corps" produced in 1985 by the officers at the School of Military Survey (SMS). The First Edition produced in 1979 was also produced at the SMS. Since the first edition was produced, a definitive history of the Corps has been published by Brigadier Fitzgerald in his book "Lebanon to Labuan" in 1980 and is the story of the Corps during WWII. This is a set of two photographs of Royal Australian Survey Corps and RAAF personnel on survey operations in PNG and possibly Indonesia circa 1975. The identified surveyor - Peter Presser served 20 years in the Australian Regular Army from 1970 to 1990. The UH-1H Iroquois helicopter (serial number partially obscured) appearing in photo 6339.2P was probably A2-379. From 1957 helicopter transport of survey parties revolutionised transport in remote areas. The most common helicopter used by the Royal Australian Survey Corps (RA Svy) up to 1972 was the civilian Bell 47G-2 and the Sioux Light Observation Helicopters (LOH), the Australian Army’s equivalent. These light observation helicopters had a limiting load carrying capacity of up to about 500 pounds. By comparison, one Aerodist team including two people weighed up to 1,500 pounds. After No. 9 Squadron (9SQN) RAAF (Iroquois helicopters) withdrew with the Australian force from Vietnam in December 1971, RAAF supported RA Svy operations with the UH-1H Iroquois helicopter for tasks of transport and resupply of survey teams. The UH-1H was capable of carrying at least three times that of the smaller Bell 47G-2/Sioux LOH helicopter and could also winch personnel and stores into difficult locations. A2-379 crashed killing the aircraft captain (FLTLT Ralph Taylor 9SQN) on impact and seriously injuring four near Wamena, Irian Jaya, Indonesia on survey Operation Cenderawasih 1977 (supporting 2 Fd Svy Sqn – Doppler satellite survey). This is a set of four photographs of WO2 Graham Ragless from the Royal Australian Survey Corps demonstrating the operation of Global Positioning System equipment in c1988. The photos were probably taken at the School of Military Survey (SMS), Bonegilla, VIC. Texas Instruments TI4100 portable Global Positioning System (GPS) geodetic receivers were introduced from 1986–1988. The GPS receivers and Ferranti FILS3 helicopter and vehicle mounted Inertial Positioning System (IPS) replaced the TRANSIT satellite receivers. The equipment was deployed to establish the baseline for a GPS controlled air camera and photogrammetric system to significantly reduce the requirement for ground survey to accurately control air photography for topographic mapping. Personnel from the four field survey squadrons at this time were trained at the SMS to operate the TI4100 receivers. Field survey operations using GPS and IPS equipment followed in the late 1980s. This technology is described in more detail in the RA Svy booklet titled An Introduction to Topographic Mapping. See record ID - 6010.
