The photos are of one of the last Annual Bendigo RSL Dinners held in the SMI, this is most likely 1998/2000. The Dinners moved to the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc at Havilah Road about 2001. The Bendigo Womens Auxiliary was actually formed in 1936 and went through until 2002. Due the Soldiers Memorial Institute becoming a Museum and the formation of the Bendigo District RSL Sub Branch Inc the Auxiliary decided to cease fund raising. Their last meeting was held on 26.8.2002. During their time at SMI the Ladies conducted weddings, functions and other fund raisers to support the Bendigo RSL. At the RSL Annual Dinner each year which the ladies catered for they would present the RSL with a cheque. The Auxiliary were awarded 6 Life Memberships and two Certificates of Merit with gold badge.Charter, small brown section timber frame with details on white background. Presentation of Life Membership to William James Norman Smart (Norm) at the Bendigo RSL Sub Branch Annual Dinner in 1998. Norm served on the Committee of the Sub Branch from 1985 to 2003, he was Treasurer from 1989 to 2003. He also served on the Welfare and Charitable Sub Committee, as a delegate to the 27/27A District Board of the RSL, an Office Bearer of the RSL Flats in Kangaroo Flat from 1987 to 2002, as a museum guide in the RSL Museum SMI from 1998 to 2015. With Appeals Norm raised some $250,000.00 in the Anzac & Poppy Appeals. This event came about with Passchendaele Barracks Military Historical Society approaching the Bendigo District RSL regarding an event. Murray Poustie who was Chairman Commemorative Sub Committee BDRSLINC took on the role of researching the background military history and organizing with Passchendaele Barracks.Program A4 folded to make 4 pages, the front has a sepia tone photo at the top followed by red & black text, at the bottom are two gold images of badges. The date the Returned Servicemen’s League officially began is generally accepted as being 6.6.1916. On the night the Bendigo RSL Museum (SMIMM) set up a cabinet and mannequin with items of memorabilia relating to Sir Gilbert Dyett. This newsletter published in January 1999 by the President Bendigo RSL Alan Holmes is basically an Annual report of the Sub Branch in 1998. The 22 sub headings cover all aspects of the Sub Branch. The one photograph shows Norm Smart with his Life Membership Certificate on the left, on the right is Jack Barnes, Norm was the Treasure BRSL and Jack was the Secretary. Photos of the 50th Anniversary Dinner on 6 October 1973 held at Chaucers during the Legacy Conference. (date to be confirmed) 00452.1 shows 6 men with Legacy Torches lined up along the front of the high table. A caption found when the photo was published elsewhere says 'On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Annual Conference of Legacy Clubs of Australia, held in Melbourne in October 1973, the Chairman of the Legacy Co-ordinating Council, Legatee George Cowan, presented an illuminated Torch emblem to the President of the capital city Legacy Club of each of the six States. Members of Legacy are determined that the Torch shall continue to burn brightly throughout Legacy's second half century of service to dependants of deceased ex-servicemen.' Other photos are of table groups or room shots. Chaucers was a reception and conference centre in Canterbury, Melbourne, before it was sold in 1999 after operating 28 years (Telegraph news article from web).
