It was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a modern retail complex. A photo of the Ruperstwood Hotel, on the corner of Evans Street and Brook Street, with a group of people and a horse and carriage outside it. The group is comprised of 5 men, 1 youth, 5 girls and a woman in the carriage. There is a sign on the fence stating " Horses and buggies always for hire. Good stabling" and on the building "Superior Wines and Spirits"; "Rupertswood Hotel" and "G. Millett. Licensed Victualler"The photo is mounted on a light brown cardboard matt, which is extremely brittle. The lower LH corner is cracked. The two storey bluestone building was the Rupertswood Hotel, which was on the NE corner of the intersection and the single storey Royal Hotel building in the foreground was on the opposite corner. The Millett family originally owned both hotels. The Rupertswood Hotel was demolished in December 1974 to make way for a modern retail store. Royal ...The two storey building is the Royal Hotel which is sited on the corner of Brook and Evans Streets in Sunbury's main shopping strip.The photograph was taken sometime in 1939 after it was totally rebuilt. A fire had damaged the old single storey structure, which was built on the same site c1860 shortly after Sunbury had a rail service. The building still operates today on the same site.The Royal Hotel is one of four hotels that were built in Evans Street Sunbury between Brook and Station Streets ion the 1860s shortly after the rail service arrived in the town. They were They were the Railway Hotel (Olive Tree), White Horse Hotel, Royal Hotel and the Rupertswood Hotel, opposite the Royal Hotel.
