Ruby Sandow was the daughter of Frank Wilson and Martha Wilson, nee Ellis. She was born at Bungaree in 1887 and married William John Sandow in 1915. Medal - Military Medal, Private Roy SANDOW MM
Original Military Medal issued to Private Roy Llewellyn Sandow, born at Georgetown South Australia who enlisted in Melbourne on the 19th September 1914 and served with the 5th Battalion AIF. He was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery at Polygon Wood, Belgium on 20th September 1917 and died of his wounds on 22nd September 1917. His citation reads:- During the attack on Polygon Wood Belgium on 20th September 1917 Pte Sandow displayed conspicuous gallantry - He was an operator on Amplification and Power Buzzer Station in a chain of communication and in the enemy barrage he patrolled and repaired lines and earths utterly regardless of personal danger. While in the performance of his duty his leg was shot away. He however completed his task. It was largely due to this man's effort that good communication was maintained. Ruby Sandow ran a general store and confectionary business there in the 1930s and 1940s, while living at the premises with her husband John and their daughter Catherine (known as Kitty).Coloured photocopy of document which certifies that fire insurance policy no. 13996325 has been renewed from 17/7/1937 to 17/7/1938, for buildings in Sussex Street Linton consisting of "Dwelling, General Store & Wash-house". Insured are Mrs. R.N. Sandow and Mr. E. Doepel, mortgagee. Premium paid was one pound, twelve shillings and eight pence. Note that the block of land which was traded was not the block in Sussex Street, Linton on which the Sandows had a shop and house, but a block just outside the town boundary, near the Geelong Road (Linton-Naringhil Road). See map of Parish of Argyle for clarification.Photocopy of original handwritten receipt, which was for payment in full for a block of land situated just outside of Linton - Section A, Crown Allotment 1, Parish of Argyle. This land was purchased by Rubina (Ruby) Sandow from George Bolte in 1918. Receipt is for fifteen pounds, it is made out to "Rubinia Norwood Sandow" and is signed by Alf J. Smith, "for Geo. Bolte". Head teacher Mr Dugard, and teachers Annie Sandow, Mrs Johnston and George Sanderson are identified in an inscription on the back of the photograph. Photograph is dated by the inscription, which identifies the head teacher as "Mr Dugard". Mr A. Duguard was head teacher for only one term in 1914. Teacher Annie Sandow is named in the inscription on the back of the photo as "Mrs Cull" (Annie Sandow married George Cull in 1915). George Sanderson taught at Linton State School between 1912 and 1917. Kitty (Catherine) Sandow and Joyce Rowe grew up in Linton and attended Linton State School. Kitty Sandow (1916-1984) married Reg Jennings in 1946. Joyce Rowe (1912-1997) married Mick (Martin) Chung in 1931. Kitty and Reg took over the management of Kitty's parent's grocery and confectionery shop, which then became known as "Jennings' Milk Bar". Joyce, a descendant of the Nicol family, worked at Nicol's bakery. Her husband Mick Chung worked for the railways.Enlarged black and white copy of original photograph which has been mounted on card. The woman on the left is carrying a handbag, while the woman on the right has a handbag tucked under her arm. Horan was head teacher at this time and is probably the male teacher wearing a suit, RHS in second row from back. The inscription on the back of the photograph notes that at the time the photograph was taken, "attendance [was] about 250 pupils", although there are fewer pupils than this in the photograph.Black and white photograph, mounted on grey card, which shows a large group of children posed for a photograph outside the Linton State School building.
