... school bells...SCHOOL BELL / SS No 3812 / CABBAGE TREE CREEK / PRIMARY...) The school bell is a signal that tells a school's students when ...The settlement of Cabbage Tree Creek is located on the Princes Highway, 27 km east of Orbost in East Gippsland. The creek, which flows through undulating forest, takes its name from the patches of Cabbage Fan palms growing along its course. A school commenced classes in 1913, but enrolment was small and at times the school operated part time with several other small schools in the area. The school building served as a hall for the district. About 1946 two sawmills commenced operations at Cabbage Tree Creek, and the Forests Commission ranger was stationed in the area. The increased population allowed the school to have more teachers and make improvements. In 1953, a new prefabricated building was erected on a new site. However, by the 1970s employment in the timber industry was unstable and the population decreased. By 1974 the school again had only one teacher and eventually closed in 1993 to amalgamate with the Orbost primary School in Ruskin Street, Orbost. (Ref. VictorianPlaces)The school bell is a signal that tells a school's students when it is time to go to class in the morning and when it is time to change classes during the day as well as when students are dismissed from school. In most schools today it will be a tone, siren, electronic bell sound, a series of chimes, or music played over an intercom but often still called "the school bell". This item reflects the history of Cabbage Tree Creek as well as the technological changes in the school system.Brass bell with incised double lines on bottom edge and top near handle, featuring descriptive notation on front face. ... School Bell...School Bell C. Wilson & Co....Large complete brass school bell with steel tongue.... there until the school relocated to a new site in early 1939. The bell ...The bell was installed in the late 1880s at Myrtleford State School 955, Elgin Street, Myrtleford and rang there until the school relocated to a new site in early 1939. The bell followed the pupils to O'Donnell Avenue, but was dismantled and placed in storage in the 1950s. This bell is tied to the early daily life of state schooling in Elgin Street, from the commencement of the decline of gold mining in the district until immediately before the outbreak of World War 2. It is also related to the daily lives of children who participated in the "consolidation" of state schooling at O'Donnell Avenue and the development of "higher elementary" education.Large complete brass school bell with steel tongue.Inscription: "C. The full story of the bell's journey from King Island is unclear, but assumption is that Roadknight family may have transferred it from their property in the Western District to Gippsland. It was common practice for the Master of shipwrecked vessel to acknowledge assistance by donating a significant relic to the persons who gave extraordinary aid in the crisis, as Mr Roadknight had done.Colour photograph of the Swan Reach school bell, showing the imprint Netherby 1858 shows teacher Lyn Wilkinson. ... .3) Smeaton Primary School Bell .4) Smeaton Primary School...." Smeaton school education bell cricket State School No. 552 .1) Red ...In 1860 Smeaton residents appealed for funds to establish a school. Patrick Curtain, and his co-workers raised more than £150 plus a land grant (Allot A, Sect 2, Township of Smeaton). Head Teacher John Forbes, with assistant Zillah North, opened a timber school building which measured 36ftx18ft (11.0x5.5m) on 1 September 1861 with 44 children. Rising enrolment to 65 in 1868 made building alterations necessary. During 1870-1 a residence of four rooms was supplied and in October 1882 a 20ftx18ft (6.1x5.5m) classroom. In 1907 a new brick building accommodated 122 children. Among notable ex-pupils are Major-General Bridgeford, Frank Wright ( Musical Director of the London County Council), Alex Wright, (AKA singer Andre Navarre), and Les Brooks. (Visions and Realisations) In 2013 it was announced that Smeaton Primary School would close. The Hepburn advocate reported: "A Department of Education spokesman has confirmed the Smeaton Primary School council recently voted unanimously to recommend the school close at the end of the year. The school currently has 12 students with enrollments dwindling during the past few years and no prep students to its boost numbers or its future. The school’s imminent closure comes as the Smeaton community gears up for the town’s 175th anniversary which will be celebrated later this year. School council member Kristi Pedretti said it had not been a decision made lightly. “There are 12 students – only one in grade 6, about eight in grade 5, two in grade 3, and one in grade 1 – and there’s only one girl in the school,” she said. “So it was a combination of everything – having that big group through in grade 5, but no preps coming through, and only one girl. “It’s hard for parents to see a future in the school.” Ms Pedretti has a son in grade 6, Jack, and is herself a former Smeaton Primary School student." .1) Red brick building .2) Smeaton Primary School logo .3) Smeaton Primary School Bell .4) Smeaton Primary School pakyground, including concrete cricket pitch.smeaton, school, education, bell, cricket, state school no. 552 -

... The school bell has been used in various forms for several... Warrnambool great-ocean-road The school bell has been used in various ...The school bell has been used in various forms for several centuries. In Australia and the UK it was often a hand bell, located on the teacher's desk in a small school. In larger schools it was positioned in a central area, and one bell was used to signal to all classrooms. In North America it was more usual to find a large bell on a stand located in a central area of the school where it could be heard by everyone throughout the premises. More recently, the school bell has become wall located, and electrically activated, using a mechanical timing apparatus. Now the same bell is computer programmed and activated, although there are many older bells still in operation. The school bell was rung at the beginning at the school day, often to summon students to the morning assembly in larger schools. It was then rung throughout the day to signal the start and end of specific lesson periods, the beginning and end of school morning and afternoon breaks, the lunch period, and the end of the school day, no doubt eagerly awaited by many students! The school bell was used as a timing device in schools to signal the start and end of specific activities.Bell brass with heavy metal square shaped base and wooden handle-hand held, Kel(?)her Melbourne on the topInscribed on the metal at the top of the bell are the letters "Kel(?)her Melbourne" flagstaff hill, warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, bell, school, lessons -

Given to John Hamilton and used on his farm to call the men to dinner. In 1922 it was used as a school bell when Higher Elementary School classes began in the Firebrigade Hall and in the Methodist & Presbyterian hall untill the Murtoa H.E.S. was built in 1925 and their own bell was purchased. The bell was donated by Miss Grace Hamilton. The Bell is significant as it was originally the property of William McClintock - one of the original settlers to obtain land in Murtoa around 1872. Its significance is enhanced by its connection to the Hamilton family and its use on the farm and later its use in the temporary school setting.Metal bell with wooden handle and metal clapperwilliam mcclintock, bell, murtoa higher elementary school, john hamilton -

It was one of the first trees planted in the school ground in Lerderderg Street. For many years the school bell was hung from this tree. This practiced ceased about 1969 and some years later the tree had to be removed as it had become damaged. This wood fragment was saved from the 'bell tree' when this was done. The wood fragment is an indicator of a once common, but now generally non-existent school practice of the ringing of a bell to communicate school commencement and finishing times during the school day. It has particular significance because Bacchus Marsh Primary School was the first government funded public primary school in Victoria.Red Gum tree wood fragmentschools, bacchus marsh primary school -

Bell, James Barwell, Animal, C 19th century
... from school bells to full church peals as well as plumbing... manufactured all sorts of bells from school bells to full church peals ...Bells of this type were normally used to hang around the necks of cows, horses or bullocks to prevent them from being lost and were used from around the 1860's onwards. The initial J B identify the bell as being made by James Barwell who made bells for the Australian market from around the 1860's. His bell and brass foundry manufactured all sorts of bells from school bells to full church peals as well as plumbing fittings. The four marks on the edge of the bell are typical of those used by drovers or owners to identify their animal. While this bell has no known local provenance, it is a link to the early cattle and agricultural life in Australia and most likely the Western District. Its significance lies in the fact that it is typical of bells used for a purpose at that time and as such can be used for discussion in a social and interpretive context. This is a brass bell of the type used to hang around the necks of animals such as cows, horses and bullocks. The mechanism for the attachment to a collar or harness has been sheared off and the clapper is detached from the inside hook. The bell has an inscription incised around the top and there are four small cuts or incisions made into the bell at the wider end. The bell is a little tarnished.‘Success to 4 in horse teams J.B.’history of warrnambool, animal husbandry, animal bell, james barwell bells -
