The photograph is one of a set taken when the children from Bulla Primary School went with a group of exchange students from Asia on a school excursion to Anakie Fairy Park, near Geelong. The park opened in December 1959 by Peter Mayer who was from a German immigrant family. The park is set out with fairy tale models throughout the entire area, such as a castle complete with turrets, dragons and fairy tail creatures.The models are all from well known fabled characters and places featured in traditional stories. For decades, Victorian state schools organised annual excursions to the Royal Melbourne Show, especially from the 1950s through the 1990s. These trips were so common that many former students remember them as a defining part of the school year. The Royal Melbourne Show wasn’t just rides and showbags, it was originally promoted as an educational agricultural exhibition. Schools attended because the Show offered: - Agricultural demonstrations - Livestock judging - Wool, dairy, and grain displays - Machinery and industry exhibits - Food production and rural‑skills education - Displays by government departments and civic organisations For many urban students, it was their only direct exposure to rural industries. In 1992 the children from the Bulla Primary School had an excursion to Woodlands Park for a Colonial Day where they were introduced to old crafts and skills. The children from Bulla Primary School enjoyed an excursion to Melbourne's Zoological Gardens where they witnessed a number of keepers tending to the animals. Some were cleaning out the enclosure while others were feeding the animals like this one in the kangaroo enclosure. The children from Bulla Primary School enjoyed an excursion to the sailing ship the Polly Woodside which was moored on the south bank of the Yarra River in Melbourne. They had the opportunity to look all over the ship and its workings were explained to the children. In this image three children are trying to turn the steering wheel on the ship's deck. Polly Woodside. The Polly Woodside is a three masted barque with an iron hull built in Belfast in 1886. That date is displayed on the ship’s bell. It was built to carry coal and wheat between Britain and South America. It continued on this route until steam powered ships superseded sailing vessels. In 1968 it was brought to Australia and eventually was acquired by the National Trust of Victoria for preservation. It is now preserved in the South Wharf precinct and cared for by volunteers. The children from Bulla Primary School were taken on an excursion to Gellibrand Hill Park which is a short distance from the School. The emphasis on the day's excursion was to identify the native fauna in the park as well as the vegetation.The property was originally settled by the Greene family in 1843. In 1980 the State Government purchased the property and it is now one of the state's parks where the natural vegetation has gradually been restored on the property. As well as having a guided tour of the Polly Woodside, the children from Bulla Primary School also enjoyed a ferry ride around the Port of Melbourne where they saw the port at work different vessels in port. On this day they were able to see a large naval ship although it was not docked at Station Pier where a lot of navy vessels often dock.
