The Alexandra Babies' Home was adjacent to the Ballarat Female Refuge in Scott's Parade, Ballarat East. The babies from the unmarried mothers at the Refuge remained at the Babies' Home until around the age of three years, when they were usually transferred to the Ballarat Orphanage in Stawell Street, Ballarat East. The Babies' Home was suddenly closed in 1973 under the Hamer Government. This book was published in 1988 by the Shire of Ballarat,and printed by the local firm of Waller and Chester.Local Historian Lloyd Jenkins researched and did the text and design for it. In 1963 the Shire of Ballarat celebrated its Centenary. This book outlines the history and development of the Shire over the 100 years.Councilor Charles Edward (Ted) Brown was at the time Shire President.The District Roads Board was created on 7th October 1856 and on 24th November 1863 was proclaimed a Shire,thus making it the first Shire in Victoria. Ballarat Female Refuge Scott's Parade in 2003. The institution was established in Grant St by a group of Ballarat women in 1867. The building is Scott's Parade was designed by the architect Caselli and was purpose built in 1884. Sarah Jane Ellis was the longest serving matron at the Ballarat Female Refuge (1903-1921). The Female Refuge was situated in Scott's Parade, Ballarat East. Yields information about one of the first two maximum traction bogie trams in Ballarat in October 1945 after it had been repainted for use in Ballarat by the SEC and the Lake / depot area at the time.Black and white photograph of SEC No. 15 in Wendouree Parade just to the south of St. Aidans Drive. Photo taken looking south with the trolley pole to the camera in the raised position. Appears to be a new trolley rope. Tram has destination of "Gardens via Drummond Nth". Possibly taken soon after receipt and repainting in Ballarat in 1945. "The Ballarat Tramways" notes that No. 15 arrived in Ballarat October 1945 and was renumbered to No. 36 in 1953.
