Newspaper cutting of the launch of Ballarat Base Hospital decorated tram No. 21 at the depot, possibly the previous day. The tram No. 21 was "decorated by nurses and their friends". The tram was to publicise the hospital's $50,000 appeal until the end of May. Inspecting the tram in the photo were public relations officer, Mr. David Rees, Dr I.C. A history of Legacy Christmas Toy Appeal. It began in 1949 with Legatee Norman Heathcote who was District Inspector of the Education Department's Metropolitan No 1 area (Port Melbourne to Sandringham). The schools produced toys which were donated to Legacy to distribute. Initially 800 toys were handed to Legacy. In 1950 it increased to 3,000 toys which were shared with Carry On. The document was written in 1967 when approximately 7,000 toys were expected and the total distributed was almost 110,000. Legacy had a Christmas Toy Appeal Committee as part of it's structure. The document includes an agenda for a handover ceremony on 16 November 1967. Was in a binder of documents that is passed from an outgoing President to the incoming President. It is primarily from the 1930s to 1990s. A leaflet issued by General William Birdwood to the AIF troops just after the Armistice on 11 November 1918 to end the first world war. 'To the officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the Australian Imperial Force. It is now just four that we have been serving together, often through days of hardship and peril, and often through times of well-deserved success. During this time I hope and think we have come to know each other well and I trust we realised how rightly we have confidence in each other. No words of mine can possibly express all I feel for the magnificent work which has been done by the Australian soldier during these long four years. It is well known and recognised, not only throughout the British Empire, but throughout the world - and now we have peace in sight, and peace after a victory in which the Australian soldier has taken so large a share. Even then, with peace there are still difficult times before us. Faith in our recent foe cannot quickly be established, and it may be that some little time yet we shall be able to relax no precautions, until we are assured of the complete and honest fulfilment of our terms. Then will come the difficult time of demobilisation, and it is regarding this that I wish to make a personal appeal to every single member of the AIF in the full confidence that it will be met as every other appeal to face and tackle the strongest positions has ever been met by the Australian solider. Never has the name of Australia stood higher than it does now throughout the world, thanks to the bravery of her soldiers, and it sup to everyone one of us to see that this is maintained, and that no reproach can be cast on the Australian Flag owing to any behaviour of ours. The time of demobilisation will undoubtedly be difficult and irksome - I fully realise what great personal self-restraint will certainly be required - but if each individual of us makes up his mind to do his best during these times, realising the good name we bear, I feel confident that all will go well. I want you to remember that everything possible will be done to look after and help the troops during this period, while every energy will be strained to get men back to their homes as soon as this possibly can be done. You will have to realise, however. that there is a great shortage of shipping, and that there must be a considerable inevitable delay. Play the game, boys, during this time, as you have always done, and add still more to the deep debt of gratitude which will always be acknowledged to you by the Empire and remembered by me as your comrade and commander. This document was sent from Sydney Legacy to assist Melbourne Legacy with fund raising. In 1974 Sydney Legacy raised $4,070 using this technique, and $163,883 in 1984 . The Citizens Committee was made up of non Legatees who were prominent within the business community. A prominent leader of industry was selected to chair the committee. The committee only met three times a year. The document sets out in detail the formation of the Torch Appeal Committee, Format of the invitation, Programme for the luncheon, Table lay out for the Official Top Table, Publicity, and 5 general points to be noted. From it's beginning in 1867, the Royal Victorian Institute for the Blind grew in size and its number of employees and benefactors. These bound volumes of annual reports contain the information sent to subscribers of the Institute and outline the notable events and difficulties facing the blind and the RVIB. This includes encouraging cricket and chess with sighted competitors, a profile of Joan Ryan who was one of the first infants admitted and received the highest marks awarded for a Matriculation exam, 3KZ's decision to share the proceeds of the Carols by Candlelight appeal between RVIB and Austin Hospital for the this and the next 2 years with funds going towards the development of the Burwood Road site, establishment of a kiosk at RVIB for a recently blinded man, introduction of a banking account for all children over the age of 6 with additional amounts added so that when they reach 16 there is 25 pounds available to them in addition to any articles they make in their leisure time which are sold, the Christmas Tree presents provided to 138 blind workers children, granting of free postage and rail transport for talking book records, sending a deaf-blind boy overseas with a nurse for special tuition, and an aerial view of the recently purchased Burwood Road site. 1 volume bound with illustrations.royal victorian institute for the blind, annual report, joan ryan, john doyle, margaret doyle, hugh jeffrey

The Compact: Introduction: Faust, aged and worn, weary with long pondering over learned treatises, in a pessimistic mood wonder whether the work is worthwhile. Memories of an early love stir strangely in his being, and he, in his doubting mood, questions all things, in despair he would welcome death, and finding no answer from the heavens, he appeals to the powers of ill. To his great surprise, he is at once answered by Mephistopheles and a colloquy then ensues in which the Evil One promises him Gold? Glory? A Kingdom? No! No! It must be 'Youth!' He finds this prediction verified when he plucks the flowers for his lady love, but when in faith he scouts the Evil One, he conquers, and the spell is broken. Faust, filled with an ardent and pure passion, approaches the dwelling of Margarita, with an offering of priceless jewels, provided by the . . .. . The Return of Valentine: Valentine, the soldier brother of Margarita, leaves for the wars, giving the care of his sister to her faithful lover, Siebel. On his return, covered with glory, and ardent to meet his people again, he hears the story of the flouting of Margarita by Faust. In this part the soldiers are welcomed home by their comrades in the male part of the song 'Fold the flag my brothers,' followed by the celebrated chorus (usually known as the 'Soldier's Chorus' Glory and love to the men of old.' It has been set, in this edition, for full choir. Mephistopheles, the evil genius, in a spirit of raillery, and exultant that his plans are working to . . . . The Price: Faust, repentant, desires to do justice to Margarita and again be her lover. Margarita is almost demented at the loss of her brother. Mephistopheles not to be cheated, thwarts the good impulse of Faust and demands his price. He also endeavors to make Margarita despair, but owing to the simple faith of the . . . . The End. The Committee of Management directing the works of the Asylum desire to bring before an always generous public the claims of the Instruction for financial support. The Appeal for 5000 pounds has been launched in the full belief that the case is a good one, and in the confident hope that it will be successful. The work carried on by the Asylum covers a big field, extending as it does from Swan Hill in the north and Melbourne in the south. Inmates from all parts of the State are given a comfortable home, and properly cared for in the eventide of their lives. There are at present in the Asylum 164 old men and women. In addition to this work the Committee thoroughly investigate and dispense relief in food to from 150 to 200 adults and from 300 to 400 children each week, and also issues a large number of blankets, boots and clothing garments to necessitous applicants. The recipients of this relief are principally widow and their little ones, and the wives and children who are dependents of miners suffering from the dread Miners' Complaint. The Committee in organizing this branch of its charity work, has, to a great extent, prevented a large amount of waste, through overlapping and duplication of effort. It now appeals to the public for the above amount in order that be may still be able to continue charity work among the poor and necessitous of Bendigo and District.
