The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Mechanic's Institute which was built on the present site in 1885. The hall was remodelled in 1922 and renamed the Sunbury Memorial Hall. The building was used until the 1960s as the meeting place by the Shire of Bulla Council. The photograph shows the extensions that were built on to the former Shire of Bulla offices in the mid 1980s. The building with the curved wall and glass tiles was where the Shire of Bulla held their council meetings. The Victorian state flag and the Shire of Bulla flags are hoisted on the poles and the bust of George Evans, an early European squatter in the district is on the RHS of the image. The Sunbury Library and the George Evans Museum are housed in buildings which were once extensions of the Shire of Bulla Municipal Offices. In the 1990's the Alister Clark Rose Garden was established in the surrounding grounds. The garden is open to the public all the year round. In 1963 construction of the new municipal shire offices began and the new offices were opened in October 1963. Before the Shire of Bulla built permanent offices in Macedon Street, the council used to meet in the Memorial Hall and had rooms there to conduct regular business. Some cottages were demolished to build the new offices which were completed and opened in 1966. Over the years as the shire's population increased, further additions were added. After Sunbury became part of Hume City Council, the former council building was occupied by Wester Water and Vic Roads.Apart from the former Shire of Bulla Roads Board office built in Sunbury in the 1860s, the 1966 building is the first council building to be built in Sunbury.A black and white photograph of a single storey office building and the surrounding garden. In 1887, W. Dwyer, from Riddell's Creek had been contracted by the Shire of Bulla to erect 68 rods (341.9 metres) of railing along a section of Gellies Road. Gellies Road links Wildwood and Lancefied Roads, south of Sunbury. The notice was issued on 17th November 1887 and the cost was 29 pounds and 8 shillings($58.80).A scanned copy of an old tender notice issued to the former Shire of Bulla council by W. Dwyer in 1887. It details the costs of erecting a rail fence in Gellies Siding. Joseph Starkie is the man in the photograph. He served on the former Shire of Bulla council for 20 years and was Shire President four times. He was also responsible for establishing a reliable water supply for Sunbury and was a member of the Sunbury Waterworks Trust. The Sunbury Waterworks Trust was established in 1905 when a reliable water supply was brought to the town. The champagne glass was used to commemorate the opening of the new Shire of Bulla Council Offices in 1966.
