At the time, news from Greece for the Greek people in Australia were arriving in Melbourne a week late, on newspapers from Athens sent through air-mail. These newspapers were displayed at Salapatas and Carras newsagents at Lonsdale street in Melbourne. One thing that was a problem for this service was that the news came at least 7 days late. Using the Shortwave Antenna we could get the latest news from Athens on shortwave radio directly and within an hour these news were recorded on a cassette tape and taken to the Tricom Group P.L. offices in Melbourne (1155 Malvern Road, Malvern 3144). The tape was loaded onto a system which allowed people to call a local phone number and listen to the latest news with a cost of a local call, or a little bit more. As this was prior to the Internet being established around the globe, it was the fastest news service directly from Greece, in the Greek language. It was used for a span of about 12 months, until Tricom closed down their dial-in services, sometime in 1990. The service was captured and loaded onto the system by Iakovos Garivaldis, then an employee of the Tricom Group which was a subsidiary of Southern Cross TV.The Primary significance of this object is of its historical value, social and informative value for the first generation of Greeks in Victoria"World Tuner AT4 SW" antenna with a 920mm fully extended aerial, a tuned circuit and two transistors to prevent loading of the antenna and boost signal output. It is made of plastic, black in colour with the aerial being made of steel. The signals picked up by the antenna are fed via a 15pF ceramic capacitor to a tuned circuit consisting of either VC1a or VC1b and either L1, L2, L3 or L4. The slider switch S1 selects the band to be tuned. The band range is normally from 3 to 30MHz. When S1 is in position A, L1 and VC1a are selected and the antenna can be tuned from 3-9MHz. Similarly positions B, C, and D select higher frequencies up to 30MHz. It avoided editorial comment. It published for 1320 continuous days, without missing a single edition. The front and back pages concentrated on current world news, including major sporting events. Page 2 was generally devoted to extracts from Australian and US newspapers. Some news was obtained by taking shorthand notes of short-wave radio bulletins from Australia, the U.S. and the B.B.C. At its peak, distribution was 37,000 to US forces and 27,000 to Australian forces, daily. The daily version had four pages and the WEEK-END SUPPLEMENT edition contained 8 pages (with extra pictures & cartoons).Guinea Gold" daily brought to the news-hungry men of the Australian and American forces serving in the steaming jungle, topics of interest to allay their boredom and boost their morale. It was able to do so because US General Douglas MacArthur, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in the South-West Pacific, gave it permission to publish his communiqués 20 hours before the release time for the rest of the world's media. Professor MacMahon Ball, a political scientist, writer, broadcaster and diplomat and family moved to York Street, Eltham in 1945 into a timber cottage built around the 1890s and in poor repair. Mac asked Alistair Knox to renovate the home and he expanded the living area and added verandahs. In 1948 Montsalvat artist and sculptor Sonia Skipper supervised the building of most of the mud-brick studio. Neighbour Gordon Ford made the mud-bricks. Mac also asked John Harcourt, who had worked with him as a journalist in shortwave broadcasting, to build a pise (rammed earth) and stone addition to the largely timber house. Harcourt built two bedrooms - including an attic bedroom - a balcony with a shower and toilet, a nd a fireplace and chimney of local stone. Professor William Macmahon Ball, was one of the first to bring Asia as a foreign policy issue to the Australian public.1 He was a political scientist, writer, broadcaster and diplomat. The house was one of the first in Eltham Shire to incorporate mud-brick,2 because of the acute shortage of building materials after World War Two. Its novice builders later become leaders in Eltham’s built and garden design. Mac (as he was usually called), who was the son of a Church of England minister, was born in Casterton, Victoria in 1901 and died in 1986. In 1945 he helped establish the United Nations, as political consultant to the Australian Delegation at the San Francisco Conference.3 Then in 1946 Mac was appointed British Commonwealth Representative on the Allied Council for Japan, which is recorded in detail in his diary.4 In 1948 Mac led an Australian Government Goodwill Mission to South East Asia. However, Mac was perhaps most successful as an academic and public speaker.5 He was a commentator on the Australian Broadcasting Commission, from the early 1930s to the early 1960s. He was also Controller of the Short-Wave Broadcasting Unit during World War Two, which later became Radio Australia. From 1923 he taught at The University of Melbourne, then became foundation Professor of Political Science in 1949 and was Chair until his retirement in 1968.6 In 1942, as the government expected a Japanese invasion, Mac’s wife Katrine and their only child Jenny, moved from Kew to Eltham as temporary evacuees. However Mac and Katrine lived in Eltham for almost the rest of their lives. After staying with friends, they rented a house in Reynolds Road, where, as it was wartime, they needed to keep horses for transport and a cow and poultry for milk and eggs. In 1945 the family moved to the house at York Street, which was then a timber cottage, built around the 1890s and in poor repair. The underground well, cellar and part of the garden are all that remain of what stood on the original 18 acre (7.3ha) allotment. Thanks largely to Katrine’s hard work, the house was gradually renovated and extended. The long rambling house was partially built by several young neighbours, who were inspired by the cheap mud-brick and stone building style of Montsalvat, the Eltham artists’ colony. Mac asked Alistair Knox to renovate Shinrone, named after an Irish village near Katrine’s family home. Knox later popularised the mud-brick style of house construction, for which Eltham became known. He expanded the living area and added verandas. In 1948 Montsalvat artist and sculptor Sonia Skipper supervised the building of most of the mud-brick studio. Another neighbour, Gordon Ford, who was to have a major influence on the Australian garden style, made the mud-bricks. Mac also asked John Harcourt, who had worked with him as a journalist in short-wave broadcasting, to build a pisé (rammed earth) and stone addition to the largely timber house. Harcourt built two bedrooms – including an attic bedroom – a balcony with a shower and toilet, and a fireplace and chimney of local sandstone. With pioneering work naturally came mistakes, including one particularly dramatic incident when Harcourt was building walls with unsupported sections. Jenny Ellis, Mac’s daughter, remembers being awakened from sleep by a thundering shudder. The wall of her room had fallen down – fortunately away from her! In 1950 artist Peter Glass – another neighbour and later landscape designer – built Katrine a mud-brick pottery. As a result, the house features at one end Harcourt’s characteristic steep gable roof, while at the other the flatter construction characteristic of Knox. Mac referred to the home as the Eltham ‘experimental building site’.7 Surprisingly, the combination works, perhaps partly because it has the warm inviting feel of timber, mud-brick and stone.This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. In later years, Perkins developed Alzheimer's and his home became his haven until two weeks before his death. ...Harvey Perkins was a Methodist minister and a peacemaker throughout his life of service and social activism. He knew the certainty that without justice there can be no peace, within, or between, communities and nations. He was greatly influenced by ''liberation theology'' and framed his life of thought, analysis and action on the teachings of the Bible. He was also a visionary in working closely with Asian churches on ecumenical and social justice issues in a way that anticipated by decades the closer relationships Australia now enjoys with Asia. He understood that any form of intervention altered the power relationship within a community and often challenged the dominant social interests in the post-colonial Asian countries. He knew any form of aid had to empower its recipients and be based on a partnership of equality. In the early 1960s, Perkins was an opponent of the war in Indochina and conscription in Australia and played an important role in activating congregations to protest against the war. His keen intelligence, knowledge of history and analytical skills demolished the false foundation on which the US and its allies entered the war and he organised medical and social work teams in South Vietnam and Laos to help refugees and displaced persons. In the 1970s Perkins played an important role in ''decolonising'' and devolving power in the Methodist Church missions in Aboriginal Australia and the Pacific Islands by analysing power structures and relationships through what he had learnt in Asia. Harvey Perkins and his twin sister, Jean, were born in Tasmania on January 29, 1919, children of Leslie Perkins and his wife, Doris (nee Cook). Leslie was a Methodist minister and Harvey and Jean's childhood was spent in parishes in urban and rural areas of Tasmania and Victoria. The family saw the grinding poverty and desperate human need wrought by the Depression as a ceaseless tide of people came knocking at the door of the local parsonage for help. In 1941, Perkins enlisted as an officer in the Australian Navy and served in the Pacific theatre until 1946. To his children, he explained his justification as being the real threat of invasion but it was a war that altered the direction of his life. On discharge he abandoned his completed studies at Melbourne University in law and commerce and studied for a degree in divinity. He was active in the World Student Christian Federation and in 1949, was ordained into the Methodist Church. A few years later, Perkins travelled to a World Student Christian Federation conference in Canada, on his way to study in Cambridge, and met an expatriate, Jill McCrory. They married in 1953. From 1968 to 1971, Perkins worked with the East Asian Christian Conference and then took a position with the World Council of Churches in Geneva with its Commission on Churches Participation in Development. He returned to Australia in 1973 to a position with the Methodist Board of Missions and then returned to the Christian Conference of Asia in 1976 and relocated to Singapore for several years. Before retiring in 1984 he worked with the Uniting Church Board of Social Responsibility. In retirement Perkins continued to work in the Dee Why parish, enjoying preaching, leading study groups and working as a pastor in a local community. Along with his work, Perkins had a lifelong passion for AFL and his beloved team North Melbourne. Wherever he was in the world he could be found fiddling with a short-wave radio to listen to a game. In later years, Perkins developed Alzheimer's and his home became his haven until two weeks before his death. ...Harvey Perkins was a Methodist minister and a peacemaker throughout his life of service and social activism. He knew the certainty that without justice there can be no peace, within, or between, communities and nations. He was greatly influenced by ''liberation theology'' and framed his life of thought, analysis and action on the teachings of the Bible. He was also a visionary in working closely with Asian churches on ecumenical and social justice issues in a way that anticipated by decades the closer relationships Australia now enjoys with Asia. He understood that any form of intervention altered the power relationship within a community and often challenged the dominant social interests in the post-colonial Asian countries. He knew any form of aid had to empower its recipients and be based on a partnership of equality. In the early 1960s, Perkins was an opponent of the war in Indochina and conscription in Australia and played an important role in activating congregations to protest against the war. His keen intelligence, knowledge of history and analytical skills demolished the false foundation on which the US and its allies entered the war and he organised medical and social work teams in South Vietnam and Laos to help refugees and displaced persons. In the 1970s Perkins played an important role in ''decolonising'' and devolving power in the Methodist Church missions in Aboriginal Australia and the Pacific Islands by analysing power structures and relationships through what he had learnt in Asia. Harvey Perkins and his twin sister, Jean, were born in Tasmania on January 29, 1919, children of Leslie Perkins and his wife, Doris (nee Cook). Leslie was a Methodist minister and Harvey and Jean's childhood was spent in parishes in urban and rural areas of Tasmania and Victoria. The family saw the grinding poverty and desperate human need wrought by the Depression as a ceaseless tide of people came knocking at the door of the local parsonage for help. In 1941, Perkins enlisted as an officer in the Australian Navy and served in the Pacific theatre until 1946. To his children, he explained his justification as being the real threat of invasion but it was a war that altered the direction of his life. On discharge he abandoned his completed studies at Melbourne University in law and commerce and studied for a degree in divinity. He was active in the World Student Christian Federation and in 1949, was ordained into the Methodist Church. A few years later, Perkins travelled to a World Student Christian Federation conference in Canada, on his way to study in Cambridge, and met an expatriate, Jill McCrory. They married in 1953. The Sister is wearing the RDNS winter uniform of a light blue.grey skivvie under a darker blue/grey V neck tunic style dress made from herringbone winter material.Liaison had occurred between doctors and the Trained nurses (Nurses) of the Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS), from its inception in 1885. This increased when Midwifery was introduced in August 1893 with close liaising with the Women’s Hospital. As District nursing grew it was recognized closer liaising between many Public Hospitals would be beneficial, for not only the MDNS, later called Royal District Nursing Service (RDNS),Trained nurses (Sisters), but also for the patients and the hospitals. In August 1964 a Liaison Officer commenced at the Alfred Hospital. This soon increased to Liaison Officers working full time at several Public Hospitals. They facilitated the smooth transition from hospital to home for many patients who required ongoing nursing care. Liaison Sisters regularly attended discharge planning meetings, interviewed prospective patients, coordinated discharge, and booked the first visit by the visiting RDNS Sister. At the time of a patient’s discharge, the Liaison Sister forwarded information on their diagnosis and instructions regarding the care required at home to the appropriate RDNS Centre, and in turn the attending District Sister wrote a report of progress and any queries to the Hospital Doctor, via the Liaison Sister, at the time the patient was attending outpatients. Any new instructions were then sent back to the District Sister. Victory Medal - The medal is bronze disc 36mm in diameter with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1918', all surrounded by a laurel leaf. The reverse, designed by William McMillan, shows St George, naked on horseback and armed with a short sword, an allegory of the physical & mental strength which achieved victory of Prussianism. The horse tramples on the Prussian eagle shield and the emblems of death, a skull and cross bones. In the background are ocean waves and just off centre near the right upper time is the risen sun of victory. The years 1914-1918 appear on the perimeter in the left and right fields respectively. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wide with 3mm wide royal blue band, 2mm wide black band, 3mm wide white band repeated in reverse order and separated by 16mm wide orange band. Victory Medal - The medal is bronze disc 36mm in diameter with a winged figure of Victory on the obverse. The reverse has the words 'THE GREAT WAR FOR CIVILIZATION 1914-1918', all surrounded by a laurel leaf. The watered silk ribbon is 32mm wided has two rainbow design with the violet from each rainbow on the outside edges, moving through to a central red stripe where both rainbows meet.The recipients name, rank, service number and unit are impressed on the bottom edge of the medal - 82069, PTE WARNER R.A.M.C -

Although there have been some design changes and refinements over the last sixty years, there have yet to be any more leaps forward in can opener technology. If you're resentfully opening a can, you are almost certainly doing it using the Star design, manually forcing the can between two wheels, or the Bodle design, clamping the can into a free-standing electrical opener. Whether or not you enjoy your holiday meals, at least you can be happy that you are not getting poisoned by your own food or cutting open your hand with the blade you use to get at it. He was a fluent lecturer and a stimulating and dogmatic teacher. Strachan was a founding member of RCOG (London) and served on its Council from 1929- 1955. He was one of the pioneers of the use of radium in treating uterine cancer, receiving a CBE in 1953 for his work in this area. Professor Strachan donated a coat of arms to the Australian RCOG during a visit (pre- 1963). Professor Strachan died at his home in Cathedral Road, London on December 9, 1963, following a short illness. He was 75.Framed black and white photograph.
