""Showboat" is a musical with music by Jerome Kern and Book and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II based on Edna Ferber's best selling 1926 novel. It was performed by the Bendigo Operatic Society in 1960. Music Programme for "Showboat" performed by Bendigo Theatre Co.Inc. June 9th to 18th at the J.B. "Showboat" was based on a novel by the same name and follows the lives of the crew and performers on the "Cotton Blossom", a Mississippi River showboat from 1887-1927. The music was written by Jerome Kern and the lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. It was first produced by Ziegfield in 1927. It was considered the first of the new genre of Light Opera as opposed to operettas or musical comedies.Bendigo Theatre Co.
