Photographs, The Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW, 1925-1926
Pte W Shirley served with 13 Battalion during WW1. Whilst an inpatient at Lady Davidson Home ex Pte Shirley commuted to Ku-Ring-Gai Chase to cut the Sphinx out of rock as a Memorial to his comrades. The time taken for the project was approximately 1 year 6 months.This is a project of 5756 Pte W Shirley 13 Battalion AIF. The Memorial is dedicated 'To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF'2 x black and white photographs of the Sphinx War Memorial, Ku-Ring-Gai Chase, NSW. A buff coloured cover for the photographs with a detailed description of the Memorial and who was responsible for the erection and placement of the memorial.On the front of the 'Sphinx' 1st plaque - To my Glorious Comrades of the AIF, by the Late W. Accessory - Ring, Mourning Ring commemorating the death of Wm Bacchus, Esq., 10th June, 1788
This ring belonged to Captain William Henry Bacchus who was one of the first British colonists to establish a farming property on Wurundjeri and Wadawurrung First Nations people lands 55 kilometers west of Melbourne. The land occupied by Bacchus in 1838 came to be known by the early colonists as Bacchus’s Marsh before later changing officially to Bacchus Marsh. The ring is believed to have been made to commemorate the death of Captain Bacchus’s father Wm (William) Bacchus in Somerset, England in 1788.This ring has significance because it is an object associated with a significant historical person in the history of the region of Bacchus Marsh. It is a rare, probably unique example of an 18th century mourning ring connected to the local community. It also has aesthetic value as an object and is in excellent condition.Gold ring with blue and black coloured inlay. A serviette ring such as this one would be part of a set of four or more. It would usually hold a starched white serviette and be used for formal dining. It is an object this is still in common use today.This serviette ring has no known local provenance and is kept for display purposes. This is a silver-coloured serviette ring. David NOONAN (1969- ) Born Ballarat, Victoria. Lives and works Melbourne, Victoria and London, United Kingdom. Leaving secondary school as soon as he could, David Noonan enrolled in a Visual Art Course at the Ballarat School of Mines. He described this time as 'an inspiring time, with every art form covered and treated with passion and rigour.' He studied ceramics, photography, painting and knew that he had to be an artist. Between 1987 and 1989 David Noonan completed a Bachelor of Fine Art at Ballarat University College, Victoria, Australia (Now Federation University Australia). Since 2005 he has been based in London with his work featuring in a number of major international exhibitions of contemporary art, including 'Altermodern', the 2009 Tate Triennial at Tate Britain, London. Producing works in a range of media including painting, photography, film, print-making, collage and sculpture David Noonan's work often evoke the subconscious realm through their fragmented imagery, allusive qualities and complex layering of historical and cultural references. Animals, actors and masked figures are recurring motifs that imbue his works with a magical atmosphere that is suggestive of childhood memories or half-forgotten dreams. Serviette, Silver Serviette Ring HW, Early 20th century
No information is available regarding this item and it is not known who ‘H.W.’ is. Silver serviettes such as this one were common household items and common wedding presents in the early 20th century. The fact that this one is silver and is monogrammed suggests that it came from an affluent family. It may have been one of a set. Serviette rings are still used today, especially for formal dining occasions. This item is of interest in that it is an example of dining customs in the early 20th century. It is a display item.This is a circular silver object used to hold a folded serviette. The puppets were made by German POW's in camp 13 and sent to internment camp 3 as gifts for the children at Christmas time.Hand painted light pink paper mache head with goatee beard, black eyes and eyebrows. Is wearing a black top hat and has black short hair and side burns. There are no body parts. His legs are just his trousers of checked tweed. His shirt is navy blue with high neck with white trim and 6 gold tacks securing head to body. Sleeves are long with white cuffs. Hands are brown paper mache.
