The Peace Palace was officially handed over in the presence of the Dutch Royal Family in 1913. Australia was part of the international community watching the inauguration of this new headquarters of the Permanent Court of Arbitration. Australia's contribution to this symbol of international peace was the donation of an office desk made of Australian Blackwood, Silky Oak and Queensland Opals, with a matching ink stand. The offer from Sir George Reid, former Prime Minister, was accepted, delivered and installed in 1914 shortly before the outbreak of World War II.(Blackwood, Silky Oak, and Queensland Opals)This bookmark and invitation to the world to visit the Peace Palace is a reminder that Australia was one of the nations that contributed to the establishment of the Peace Palace, contributing a commissioned desk and inkwell for furnishing the Palace. These items were designed and made by leading Australian designers and craftsmen and used Australian materials.Printed massage 'Holland welcomes the World in1913' with border printing 'Come and see the Peace Palace'.bookmark, peace palace, holland, invitation, tourism, carnegie, arbitration, gifts

The photograph on the obverse side of the postcard was taken in Egypt on 4 March 1916, during World War I. Depicted are three unidentified Australian soldiers part of the Australian Imperial Force. They are dressed in military uniforms. Each of these men are seated atop a camel's back. All three camels are draped in - what are believed to be - traditional Egyptian textiles, including tassels, carpets and beads. In the background, we can see a triangular pyramid and the Great Sphinx of Giza. The Australian Imperial Force (AIF) were established by the Australian government in August 1914. This announcement marked the beginning of Australia's involvement in World War I. Immediately, men were recruited to serve the British Empire in the Middle East and on the Western Front. The first contingent of the AIF departed Australia by ship in November 1914. England was their destination. Although, their convoy was diverted to Egypt after the Australian High Commissioner in London, Sir George Reid, and the British military authorities unanimously agreed that the overcrowded military camps in England were unsuitable for so many men over winter. The AIF disembarked in Alexandria, Egypt on 3 December 1914, and the men moved to training camps near Cairo. It was in Egypt that the AIF and the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) formed one united corps - the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). This group of troops trained in the desert beneath the pyramids until March 1915.The record is historically significant due to its connection to World War I. This conflict is integral to Australian culture as it was the single greatest loss of life and the greatest repatriation of casualties in the country's history. On 25 April 1915, members of the Australian Imperial Force landed on Gallipoli in Turkey with troops from New Zealand, Britain, and France. This specific event holds very strong significance within Australian history. The record has strong research potential. This is due to the ongoing public and scholarly interest in war, history, and especially the ANZAC legend, which is commemorated annually on 25 April, known as ANZAC Day. The record's unique research potential is strengthened by its relationship to a historically significant site: the Egyptian pyramids. Since the postcard was produced in 1916, the record can be used as primary evidence for historians and conservationists studying these sites, or how these sites have evolved over time. The record may also be a useful resource for those interested in the history of Egyptian textiles. Furthermore, it may also provide insight into international relations between Egypt and Australia in the past and present.Sepia rectangular postcard printed on paper.Obverse: 172 / Reverse: 6536 / CARTE POSTALE / 4/3/16 / Rough riders under / the shadow of the / pyramids /military album, army, war, wwi, world war i, egypt, pyramid, great sphinx of giza, textiles, australian imperial force, aif, uniform

Albion Quarry began operations in 1888, and became one of the largest bluestone quarries in Australia, later it became the Sunshine municipal tip. In 1888, quarrying first began on the site by the Wales family. The quarry extracted high quality bluestone, ideal for road construction, railway ballast, culverts, bridges and public buildings and private homes. The site quickly became one of the most productive basalt quarries in the region. In 1907, the Albion Quarry Company was formed as a partnership between Alexander Wales, James Watter, Peter Rumpf, Thomas Adams, William Wright Wales and Alexander George Wales (later Sir George Wales, Lord Mayor of Melbourne) The company became the largest producer of quarry products in the Commonwealth. The quarry pit was, at one time, the largest in Australia. In January 1965, Boral acquired both Albion Quarry and Reid Quarry, merging them into Albion Reid Pty Ltd. Quarrying there continued until the late 1960s–early 1970s. After quarrying ceased, the enormous pit was used as the Sunshine municipal tip. Dumped into the hole included household waste, industrial waste, chemical waste, radioactive waste and large quantities of unknown fill. Dumping continued until 1990. In the 1990’s, a methane powered electricity plant was installed on the site, but it failed due to insufficient methane production. In 2019, the former quarry made national news due to ground contamination affecting 69 residential homes, 6 commercial properties and a community park. The site is now being reserved for the future Sunshine Energy Park and is awaiting redevelopment. This quarry is historically significant for its scale, its role in Melbourne’s infrastructure, and its later environmental legacy. These photographs document the initial phase of quarrying, featuring manual labour and transportation by horse and cart.Albion basalt quarryalbion quarry, ballarat road, albion, basalt, hulett street

The Police Court was established at Melbourne, Port Phillip in October 1836 soon after Captain William Lonsdale arrived with instructions from Governor Sir Richard Bourke in Sydney to set up an arm of the Government of the Colony of New South Wales. Hearings began in the Police Court at Geelong soon after Captain Foster Fyans took up his appointment as Police Magistrate late in 1837. The earliest court records provide evidence of the wide range of cases heard and show impersonal terms the social problems and attitudes among the early settlers of Port Phillip. Study of the court records shows that the majority of charges were `drunk and disorderly: Charges of absconding or refusal to work on the part of assigned convicts or indentured free servants are also very numerous and were dealt with under the Masters and Servants Act. The penalties imposed reflect the values of the time when people were expected to `know their place' and to behave accordingly. In many of the cases a charitable and benevolent justice was administered. In others the judgements seem harsh to us. As far as the verdicts were concerned, all were equal before the law. Sentences usually varied for those found guilty of similar offences according to whether they were convict or free servants, city and country property owners or agents, or aborigines. The court findings were factual and fair, but the penalties varied with the offender. People who could afford to pay fines were very few, so that other penalties had to be imposed. Cases recorded in this document were by several Clerks of Court and those reproduced here are selected for their intrinsic interest. They are not a statistically representative sample.Crime And Punishment in Port Phillip 1836 to 1838police court, port phillip, captain william lonsdale, governor sir richard bourke, james lawrence, alfred boucher, michael malony, george frederick reid, joseph suthlerland

Hard Cover Book. An English Man Looks At The World Author: HG Wells Publisher: Cassell & Co Date: 1914 Further Information: Yellow Cloth hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in black. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionPublished in 1914, this is a collection of essays by H.G. Wells consisting of journalistic pieces written between 1909 and 1914, spanning twenty-six pieces ranging from five to sixty-two pages in length. Roughly half of the essays were originally printed in the Daily Mail between 1904 and 1913, with ten more appearing in nearly as many weekly and monthly papers, and three others having had prior publication in volume form. The subjects range widely flight and aviation with the opening with Blériot's Channel crossing, the monarchy, imperialism, labour and socialism, modern warfare, sociology, divorce, education, motherhood, the future of civilisation, and more. It's essentially Wells thinking aloud in print opinionated, topical journalism rather than fiction, reflecting a period when he was consciously stepping back from novel-writing to comment directly on contemporary affairs. It's a collection of linked sketches and stories about settler life in colonial Rhodesia depicted in episodic, anecdotal accounts of daily life, characters, and the "rigours" of white settler society in early 20th-century Salisbury and the surrounding country. It sits alongside her better-known earlier book Sally in Rhodesia (1926), which originated as letters written by a young bride in Rhodesia to her mother overseas between 1907 and 1912, describing the rigours of domestic life in the city of Salisbury. Martie is essentially a sequel and companion volume in that same vein, with more fictionalised sketches of colonial life, characters, and social mores, following on from Sally's success.warrnambool, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, book, martie and others in rhodesia, sheila mcdonald

Hard cover book. Explorers of the Dawn Author: Mazo de la Roche Publisher: Cassell & Co Date: 1922-1924 Further Information: Blue Cloth hardcover with lettering and patterning to spine in black. The spine has a Library label with an inscription.fictionThis work is a collection of ten related episodes, unified by tone, setting, character and theme, that can be read as a single story. The main character is an adult, John Curzon, who narrates the adventures of himself and his two brothers as small boys. The brothers are David (‘Angel’) and Alexander (‘The Seraph’). After their mother dies and their father leaves for South America to build a railway, the boys are placed with their father’s former governess, Mrs Handsomebody, in a grey cathedral town. The episodes include a midnight treasure hunt with a retired ‘pirate’ neighbour, Captain Pegg, a first childhood love, a secret expedition to watch the dawn, and the adoption of a stray terrier. The central tension is between the boys’ imagination and instinct and their governess’s repressive, respectable rule. Kindly older figures, such as the Irish maid and a bishop, side with the boys. The book also touches on grief, old age, poverty and death.book, explorers of the dawn, mazo de la roche, shipwrecked-coast, flagstaff-hill, flagstaff-hill-maritime-museum, warrnambool, maritime-museum, shipwreck-coast, flagstaff-hill-maritime-village, shipwrecked-artefact, pattison collection, warrnambool library, warrnambool mechanics’ institute, ralph eric pattison, corangamite regional library service, warrnambool city librarian, mechanics’ institute library, victorian library board, warrnambool books and records, warrnambool children’s library, great ocean road
