Summary

Martie and Others in Rhodesia was published by Cassell & Co. in 1927. It's a collection of linked sketches and stories about settler life in colonial Rhodesia depicted in episodic, anecdotal accounts of daily life, characters, and the "rigours" of white settler society in early 20th-century Salisbury and the surrounding country. It sits alongside her better-known earlier book Sally in Rhodesia (1926), which originated as letters written by a young bride in Rhodesia to her mother overseas between 1907 and 1912, describing the rigours of domestic life in the city of Salisbury. Martie is essentially a sequel and companion volume in that same vein, with more fictionalised sketches of colonial life, characters, and social mores, following on from Sally's success.
