St Marys was established in 1876 by the Sisters of Mercy. The original convent building was built in 1865 to the design of Vahland and Getzschmann. Ella Bourke (nee Kennedy) attended St Mary's College in Bendigo from 1926 until her matriculation about seven years later. St Marys was established in 1876 by the Sisters of Mercy. The original convent building was built in 1865 to the design of Vahland and Getzschmann. There are a number of later additions including the chapel and classrooms. The spoon has the name Stokes on the rear of the spoon. This was possibly produced by the Melbourne firm Stokes and Sons Pty Ltd.Silver-plated collectable teaspoon with embossed decoration on top of handle with description 'St Marys College' and motto 'Omnia prote cor Jesu'. Bottom of spoon is squarish in shape. Finish is tarnished.Decoration on top of spoon has inscriptions 'St Marys College', 'Bendigo', and Latin motto 'Omnia prote cor Jesu'. An exceptional singer who contributed greatly to local Bendigo and Australia as well as abroad Bendigo born and raised by Edwin and Annie Webster, Education was at Camp Hill. A life long participation in and commitment to local music and Competition Society provided opportunities for performance. The ultimate prize for amateur singers at the time was the Sun News Pictorial Aria Competition, which Mavis attained as runner up in 1938 and as winner in 1939. Outbreak of WWII curtailed early opportunities for overseas travel but there was much call for her as recitalist, artist and teacher such as at The Sisters of Mercy at St Mary's Convent, Bendigo where she taught singing. Mavis gained impressive reputation and experience in numerous roles including as chorister (and founder of the all female choir and the Benola singers which she also named, after her home), and later (1960) included male voices; she was also conductor; musical director; and adjudicator at Eisteddfords. She laso taught at Girton, St Killian's. During the 1950s Mavis went on a very successful 9 month overseas trip on which she was inspired in many respects including the formation of the choirs. In the years of Allan Doney’s photography, landmark buildings succumbed to fire, neglect and redevelopment. He photographed the grey sand hills from Bendigo’s mining past, the streetscapes, poppet heads, miners’ cottages, gracious homes with ornate verandahs, trams and much more. Above all, his photographs show how much of the city has survived from the 19th century – and how much has not. Through two decades of great change, Allan Doney was there to capture ways people interacted with it. Although he travelled to many other places in Northern Victoria and beyond in search of subjects for his art, he seemed to always return to Bendigo for inspiration.
