Card to record contributions to the J. L. Williams Memorial Scholarship fund. The fund was established in the memory of Jack Williams, who was a teacher at the St Kilda School on Brighton Road for 24 years. Contributions were sought towards raising about 350 pounds to establish a perpetual scholarship awarded annually to a pupil of the school. Jack Williams is also remembered through the J. L. Williams Medal, first issued in 1931 by the Australian State/Secondary Schools' National Football Council (now awarded by School Sport Australia), in recognition of his efforts to establish what is now known as the School Sport Australia Championship. The North Warrnambool Rifle Club was operating in Warrnambool in the 1930s. It had 132 members in 1935. A noted member was the well-known local photographer, Arthur Jordan whose father, Joseph, was a crack rifle shot and was a member of the Warrnambool Rifle Club. The Barber Centenary Cup was presumably established to commemorate the Centenary of Victoria as the cup competitions commenced in 1934 and were completed in 1935. The competitions were usually held over distances of 300, 500 and 600 yards. It is not known which member of the several Barber families in Warrnambool at the time donated the cup but G. Barber was a member of the Rifle Club in 1934-5 and winner of the Gray Centenary Cup. W. D. McDonald, the winner of the trophy, was the Captain of the C lub in 1935.This item is significant as it is connected with early 20th century Warrnambool sport (rifle shooting). These pennants have all been awarded to the premier bowls team in the Warrnambool district. The Warrnambool District Bowls Association includes the bowls clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool, Lawn Tennis and City Memorial. As the pennants have come from the now-defunct St. John’s Bowls Club of Warrnambool it is presumed that the St. John’s Club was the recipient of the pennants. St. John’s Club ceased to operate in 2013. It was associated with St. John’s Presbyterian Church and was situated in Princess Street. These pennants are of some interest as being mementoes of St. John’s Bowls Club, Warrnambool. This club was a prominent sporting club in Warrnambool for over 80 years. Bowls is a popular sport in Warrnambool.These are 13 triangular-shaped pennants. They are multi-coloured and made of felt cloth. Some are yellow and green, some are dark blue and white, some are yellow and blue and some are yellow and white. They are all pennants awarded for the premier teams in local Warrnambool bowls clubs, ranging in date from 1959 to 1981. This is a flag awarded to the Premiers of the Warrnambool District Bowls Association for 1963-4. The members of the Warrnambool District Bowls Association are Timboon, Dennington, Koroit, Port Fairy, Terang, Lawn Tennis, City Memorial and Warrnambool Bowls Clubs. It is presumed that this flag was awarded to St. John’s Bowls Club as it was passed over from that club to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society in 2014. St. John’s Bowls Club in Princess Street, Warrnambool was associated with the Warrnambool Presbyterian Church. It was formed in the 1930s and ceased to exist in 2013. This flag is of some interest as a memento of St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. This club was a well-known sporting club in the 20th and early 21st centuries in Warrnambool. Bowling is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a triangular-shaped cloth flag or pennant. The base of the triangle has a white canvas folded binding in which is enclosed a plaited rope with a metal clip for attachment to a pole. This is a pennant from the Warrnambool District Bowls Association. This association is a division of the West Coast Bowls Association and the members are the Bowls Clubs of Dennington, Koroit, Lawn Tennis Club, Mortlake, Terang, Port Fairy, Timboon, Warrnambool and City Memorial. This pennant was awarded for the premiers of 1975/76 and, as the pennant came from St.John’s Bowls Club (Presbyterian Church Warrnambool) it is presumed that this club was the winner of this pennant. St. John’s Bowls Club, in Princess Street, Warrnambool, was prominent in the 20th century but has now been disbanded (early 21st century) with the land sold in 2014. The maker of the flag, Evan Evans Pty Ltd, is a well-known Australian flag-making business. It was founded in 1877 and a member of the family was a co-designer of the Australian flag in 1901. This pennant is of some interest as it was awarded by the Warrnambool District Bowls Association to St. John’s Bowls Club in Warrnambool. As the St. John’s Club no longer exists it is an important memento of this Warrnambool sports club. Bowls is a popular sport in Warrnambool. This is a large triangular-shaped pennant from the Warrnambool District Bowls Association (1975-6). It is a white cloth pennant made in two sections with stitched hems on the edges and through the centre. The side holding the cord is made of thicker folded cloth with a white plaited cord inserted. The lettering is made of blue cloth and machine stitched on to the pennant. The material is nylon and wool. This trophy was awarded in 1934 to the Congregational Men’s Institute (C.M.I.), a men’s group attached to the Congregational Church at that time. A Congregational Church was opened in Liebig Street, Warrnambool in 1864 and a new church was opened in Henna Street in 1940. In 1979 this church was sold to the Salvation Army following the merging of the Congregational and Methodist Churches, re-forming as the Uniting Church. It is assumed that “W.C.A.’ refers to the Warrnambool Cricket Association. Cricket has been a dominant and popular sport in Warrnambool since the days of the first settlement of the town. Today the Warrnambool and District Cricket Association encompasses 13 clubs operating in three divisions. This cup is of interest, being one of the trophies won in the 1930s by the Congregational Men’s Institute, a leading men’s church group in Warrnambool at the time. This is a silver cup with a long thin stem attached to a silver and bakelite base. The cup has two handles. There is an inscription on one side of the base. This trophy is one of several from the 1930s that were awarded as part of the competitions held in Warrnambool by the Inter-Church Indoor Sports Association. One of the sponsors of this competition was Fletcher Jones, the well-known clothing manufacturer who had his head office and main factory in Warrnambool. This trophy was the Bates Cup and it was probably donated by Harold Bates, a property developer who was a Warrnambool City Councillor from 1941 to 1945. This trophy was for the deck quoits competition. The game of quoits consists of competitors throwing four or five rings or hoops on to a raised spike some metres away. The hoops are generally made of plaited rope and the game is said to have been started or popularized by sailors on board ship. In deck quoits the raised spike is usually replaced by concentric circles drawn on the playing surface. This game became very popular on ocean liner cruise ships from the 1920s on. At this meeting we are pleased to have as our guest speaker Dr. Andrew Lemon, a great friend of EDHS and a Fellow and the immediate Past President of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria. Andrew is an independent Melbourne historian, author of numerous books on local history, shipwrecks, biography, schools and sport and winner of national literary awards. He has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters by the University of Melbourne for his published works. Andrew edited the Victorian Historical Journal throughout the 1990s and served on the Library Board of Victoria and the Heritage Council. This blazer pocket is from Ann (Price) Royal's Clarendon Presbyterian Ladies College blazer. Ann attended CPLC 1947 - 1957. Blazer pockets were embroidered with the school crest and additional embroidery was added during a student's years at College to reflect school colours and leadership roles. School colours were awarded for participation and leadership in various sport, house and academic pursuits. Ann's pocket, and the accompanying authorisation receipt reflect her receipt of the following awards: Athletics Colours (1952 - 1957), Hockey Colours (1954 - 1957) , Cairns House colours, school colours (1957) as well as leadership roles as Prefect (1957), House Captain (1957) and Sports Captain (1956). Students removed their pockets after graduation to keep as a momento of their school years. The authorisation receipt indicates that Ann's family chose not to have the final embroidery for Aths 1957, Hockey 1957 added to the pocket - probably because these awards would have been identified at the end of Ann's final school year. As an incentive to improve school work and develop student leadership, from 1927 former Clarendon PLC student Nellie Sutherland (Coulter) donated a silver cup each year. The cup soon became a prestigious award. It was awarded to the girl holding the leading place in 'work, sport and above all moral character'. The cups were awarded annually until to 1951. Mrs Sutherland made these gifts partly to remember her school days under Mrs Kennedy and because the school in Mair Street was built on the site of her former home. But the main reason was in memory of her two brothers Jason and Les killed during World War 1. In 2001 the Junior School Parent Group funded the ongoing award for a Year 6 student. The award criteria in 2001 were 'general excellence in academic achievement, respect for and from others, a positive role model, involvement and initiative'. Beverley donated her Coulter Cup back to the school archive 'in appreciation of the wonderful experience I had a school' (CPLC reunion, April 2017). Jeanette Perkins was born in 1927 at Ballarat. She attended Alfredton State School and Pleasant Street State School before completing her secondary schooling at Ballarat High School (BHS). During her later years at BHS Perkins decided that she wanted to become a geologist, but was ineligible for university when she failed Leaving Certificate maths. She attended an interview with the principal (Heseltine) at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB) and announced that she wanted to be a geologist. Heseltine was, according to Perkins, aghast: he informed her that there had never been a female geologist at SMB and they didn't want one. But Perkins persisted. Only then did Heseltine reluctantly enrol her in the School's Applied Chemistry Course which offered the most geological subjects, moreover, it was the only one he considered available to a 'mere' female. After graduating Perkins was employed as a metallurgical chemist with M.B. Johns Valves, Ballarat. In 1949 she married Alfred Watson. In 1951 Jeanette and Alf Watson moved to Melbourne where she commenced work as a metallurgical chemist at the Maribyrnong Ordnance Factory while studying geology part time: Alf returned to study at the University of Melbourne. Once again, Watson set a precedent by becoming the first female student to study geology part-time at the Melbourne Technical College. Increasing demands brought about by her growing family, she turned to part-time lecturing second and third year stratigraphy and palaeontology at RMIT. In 1957 the Watsons moved to the Mary Kathleen Uranium Mine in NW Queensland where he was appointed electrical design engineer. After their return to Melbourne in 1960, Jeanette taught herself to SCUBA dive and quickly developed a passion for the sport and the marine environment. She taught senior science to secondary students for 10 years whilst working towards a Masters degree.
