Wodonga & District Historical Society IncBooklet - A History of St Francis Bethanga, Patricia Packer, 1992
... St Francis Church Bethanga...St Francis Church provided a place of worship for nearly 150 years. ...The first church in Bethanga was built by the Wesleyans in early 1876 and was also used by other denominations. In early 1886 the Anglican Church was built followed by St Francis Catholic Church later that year. St Francis Church provided a place of worship for nearly 150 years. It was part of the Parish of Wodonga and the Diocese of Sandhurst. The church was relocated in 1917 after it was decided the original location was unsuitable because of the steepness of its approach. Parishioners found it particularly difficult to attend in winter as the surrounds became wet and muddy. Land was purchased which had stables for horses and coaches that would stop between Wodonga and the Upper Murray. Reverend Dr James Flynn hired a carpenter and other workers to demolish the building and cut the church into sections where it was hauled and rebuilt on the new site in Bridge Street, Bethanga. After changing demographics and a dwindling congregation the last regular Mass was held at St Francis in December 2019. Following a decision to close St Francis Catholic Church a final farewell service on was held on 20th August 2022. The building was sold in October 2023.A small booklet of 56 pages including text and images. The first church in Bethanga was built by the Wesleyans in early 1876 and was also used by other denominations. It contained a mixture made up for Archdeacon Thomas Bennett who was the Anglican Vicar of Christ Church, Warrnambool from 1912 to 1915. As Captain Bennett he was the chaplain of the 22nd Battalion in World War One from 1915 to 1917. He became Archdeacon of Warrnambool in 1917 and held this position until 1937. He spent much time on his return assisting returned World War One soldiers and their kin in the Warrnambool area. He was the first President of the Warrnambool Returned Soldiers League. Francis Bloore, born in Ballarat in 1874, came to Warrnambool about 1912. In 1914 he leased a newly-built shop at the corner of Liebig Street and Raglan Parade and continued on the business until the late 1930s. This bottle is of great interest as it is one of the few items we have in our collection associated with the pharmacy business of Francis Bloore. The bottle is also associated with an important Warrnambool Anglican Church identity, Archdeacon Bennett. This is a glass bottle with a rectangular-shaped body with rounded edges, a circular-shaped neck and a circular moulded top with an opening. It has a cork stopper. The top of the bottle is chipped. The label on the front of the bottle is partly torn away and very stained with most of the handwriting and some of the printing indecipherable. The inside of the bottle is discoloured. ‘The Mixture …. tablespoonful with water every three hours - Archdn Bennett’ ‘Shake the Bottle’ ‘F.W. Jones, dated 20/06/1991, describing the history of the suburb. The author has drawn heavily from the 4 sources noted in the bibliography. Subjects covered include the ship the suburb is named after, the suburb’s State School, the suburb’s churches, the Rosstown Railway and Sugar Mill, the origin of the name of Carnegie, the suburb’s aerodrome, and the beautification of the Glen Huntly Shopping Centre. The final 12 pages consist of 9 appendices relating to the aforementioned subjects. Appendix A is a typewritten letter from Ron McLeod, secretary of the Place Names Committee, to Mr. D. R. Aylen, CEO of the City of Caulfield, notifying the latter of the alteration of the name ‘Glenhuntly’ to ‘Glen Huntly’. Appendix B is a list of the ministers of St. David’s Uniting Church from its formation in 1916 to the present. Appendix C identifies the persons portrayed in St. David’s stained glass windows. Appendix D is a poster announcing the auction of 41 blocks of land between Hawthorn and Bambra Road formerly owned by William Ross, plus a map identifying said land blocks and another for locality. Appendix E is an A4 plan of the Rosstown Railway. Appendix F is a drawing of the Rosstown Sugar Mill.
