Gold bearing ore is pulverized by cast iron stampers (steam driven) and material then passes over a large copper plate covered in mercury causing the gold particles to combine with the mercury to form an amalgam which is scraped of and placed in a retort. The retort is heated causing the mercury to evaporate leaving the gold to be refined into ingots. The mercury is cooled as it leaves the retort and is reused. A second tray covered in what is called a blanket traps any fine gold that has passed the first plate. Finally the residue material goes over a vibrating table called a Wilfley Table which captures any iron pyrites which may contain about three percent gold. this is roasted and treated to recover any remaining gold at a special treatment plant.Wooden model of a five heads gold stamper battery. This postcard depicts the set-up of an abandoned gold mine. This includes a water wheel and other mining implements next to a creek. The postcard inscription indicates that this image is of the remains of the Wallaby Reef battery and water wheel. Wallaby Reef was discovered in 1864, and a prospecting claim established a four head battery and water wheel. Quartz was mined there, with gold also discovered at this location at a later date. By 1878 the mine was no longer resulting in rich deposits, this resulted in the miners moving their search for gold closer to the river where they were able to access more gold. This was in approximately 1879. In 1882 a rich deposit was found. In 1908 the battery was closed, and the mine finished. This photo was taken in 1920 and shows the deterioration of the site since its closure. Gold mining was crucial to the development of the Beechworth area. It has strong research and historical value because the clarity of the photo shows all the minute details of the mining equipment. The text on the back also indicates the mine is the Wallaby Mine, which was used for 45 years to find gold and quartz. Therefore, due to the location being quickly abandoned, this site is a rich location for historical study on gold mining during the 1900s. The Garfield water wheel was the largest ever constructed in Victoria, standing 22 metres tall. Water was brought via a race from the Expedition Pass Reservoir and passed through the water wheel to power a 23 head stamping battery. This was all part of the Garfield Mining Company established in 1882. The wheel was in operation from 1887 to 1903 and was dismantled in 1904, leaving the stone supports still standing.Horwood Collection - Chewton Water Wheel. The main photograph of the battery, "Vivian" a 24 Head Stamper is now in Beaconsfield, Tasmania. The battery head stamper was made in 1862 for crushing gold ore for the "Newchum" mine at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell) Victoria. In 1933 the Chintock family used the Head Stamper to cruse tin ore in a mine at Blue Teir in north-eastern Tasmania. It is not know how or when "Vivian" the battery head stamper came to Tasmania. The Ballarat School of Mines Model Mine was used to give practical experience to students, as well as to conduct assays for companies and individuals for a fee. The fee assisted in keeping the Ballarat School of Mines afloat in its first years. The Battery, or model mine, included a Stamper Battery, Wilfrey Tables and various pieces of equipment students would encounter in their workplace. Professor Ferdinand Krause lectered at the Ballarat School of Mines from 1880-1995. His descendant returned to Ballarat, visiting the new campus at Mt Helen. The information on this photograph was provided by E.J. Tippett. There is a possibility the subjects of the photo are descendants of Herbert Krause.Descendants of Prof. F.M. Krause stand in front of a battery stamper that had been used at the Ballarat School of Mines, and transferred to Mt Helen around 1969. The construction of the first buildings of the new Mt Helen campus are evident in the background.
