... Stand......stand...A stand or support for utensils near or on the fire. ...Metal stand, heart-shaped, with three metal feet or supports. ...Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village 89 Merri Street Warrnambool great-ocean-road A stand or support for utensils near or on the fire. ...A stand or support for utensils near or on the fire. Usually made of wrought iron, the most common variety, from the 17th century, stands on three legs and has a circular plate with perforated decoration, often in the form of a date. Another early type, short-legged, stood in the fire to support a cast-iron pot. Later, in the second half of the 18th century, trivets designed to be hung from fire bars were made. These were of two types: an oblong, standing trivet with a handle at one end and projections to fit over the fire bars at the other, and a plate that could be attached to the fire bar. Some of the latter were hung inside the grate supporting a vessel over the fire. Large quantities of cast-brass fender trivets were manufactured at Birmingham, in England, in the last quarter of the 18th century; these were suspended from the top rails of the fender as muffin and kettle stands. Four-legged trivets that stood under the spit holding the dripping pan were made in the 18th and 19th centuries. The cat, an entirely different type of plate stand that was made in the 18th century, consisted of six spokes, three at the top and three at the bottom; it could be used either way up. The term trivet is also used in reference to a metal stand with short feet, used on a table to support a hot dish.Trivets have been used since the invention of iron and are essential for placing hot items on surfaces. This trivet is an example of a trivet used in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.Metal stand, heart-shaped, with three metal feet or supports. Made to rest and sppport hot items such as pots or irons. Shoe stand Shoes ...This item would have been made as a stand to display shoes in a shop. It may have been made locally in Warrnambool. As this item was donated to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society by a member of the Dickson family some years ago, it is highly likely that the stand was used for display purposes in the Warrnambool department store of Cramond and Dickson. This store, selling mainly men’s and ladies’ wear, was established by John Cramond and James Dickson in Warrnambool in 1853 in Timor Street and it later moved to Liebig Street, closing in 1973. This stand is of interest as an example of the type of stand used for display in shops early to mid 20th century. It is also significant as a possible memento of the Cramond and Dickson shop which was so important in Warrnambool’s history. This is a shoe stand with a wooden stick or pole tapering slightly to the top and ridged in three places. The pole is mounted on a wooden pedestal which is rectangular-shaped and which is indented to form a smaller rectangular base. A small wooden piece in the shape of a flat bottom of a shoe is attached to the pole with a metal bolt and nut. This enables the shoe piece to remain flat or to be tilted at various angles. cramond and dickson store, warrnambool, history of warrnambool, shoe display -

Wodonga & District Historical Society IncFunctional object - Hand drill mounted on wooden stand, Early to mid 20th Century
... Hand drill mounted on wooden stand...A metal hand drill which has been mounted on to an improvised wooden stand. ...Hand tools Mass production Egg beater drills A metal hand drill which has been mounted on to an improvised wooden stand. Hand drill mounted on wooden stand Functional object Hand drill mounted on wooden stand ...This style of geared drill was commonly referred to as an egg-beater drill and was first patented in 1838. During the late 19th century these drills became more common due to the development of mass production. Users also began to mount the drill onto a frame. This allowed greater control over the drill and removed the need to be holding it in both hands. This gave the operater greater control over the item to be drilled. The drill could be easily removed when required. This item is an example of a domestic woodworking tool commonly used before the widespread use of power tools. The construction of the basic wooden frame also demonstrates the ingenuity of early pioneers and tradesmen in adapting tools to suit their own needs.A metal hand drill which has been mounted on to an improvised wooden stand. hand tools, mass production, egg beater drills -
