The people were attending the launch of the display of street signs that included historic information and were going to be mounted in Bulla and the old Broadmeadows townships. The signs included street names and information about the origins of the names. The group were attending the launch and displaying of street signs with added historical information that were to be erected in the Bulla township and the former old Broadmeadows township. The historical research on the origin of names of the streets was carried out by members of the Sunbury Family History and Heritage Society with support from Hume City Council. The launch took place in Foresters Hall in the old Broadmeadows township on 3rd April 2025. Elizabeth Nelson on eMelbourne has written that: "War Savings Streets were street-based savings groups that participated in the national war savings campaign during World War II. In May 1940 the Australian Government launched its Savings Certificates scheme which encouraged civilians to invest in the national war effort. Organisers of the savings campaign targeted Melbourne's suburbs individually with the aim of enlisting street savings groups. Each street group had a volunteer secretary who regularly sold war savings certificates to, and collected money from, other residents. Intersection with local Street signs Newsletter No., 229, August 2016 Heritage Excursion - Maroondah Aqueduct Walk - Saturday 3rd September The Maroondah Aqueduct was once a major link in Melbourne’s water supply system. It was built between 1886 and 1891 to transfer water from the Watts River near Healesville to the Preston Reservoir. It was 66 km in length, made up of 41 km of open channel, 10 km of tunnel through hills and 15 km of pipeline across stream valleys known as inverted siphons. The section of the aqueduct through the Eltham area has been abandoned since the 1980s but the open channel has largely been retained. A recreational path follows the aqueduct reserve. For our excursion on 3rd September we intend to walk along the section of the aqueduct adjacent to Allendale Road. This is a section not visited on previous excursions and includes the transition from open channel to the inverted siphon across the Diamond Creek valley. Apart from the aqueduct itself the main feature of the walk is the extensive views across Eltham North and Diamond Creek. Along the way we will talk about the history of the aqueduct and the area. This easy walk is about 3 km return and will take 2 to 2.5 hours. It will start at 2pm at the junction of Allendale Road with Godber Road and Zig Zag Road North, officially Diamond Creek, but on the northern boundary of Eltham. (Melway ref.12 B10). In April 1999, Arthritis Foundation of Victoria staff travelled to Merbein, Sea Lake, and Mildura during National Arthritis Week (NAW). These visits were conceived as part of the Rural Access Project. This photo depicts a street view of a cenotaph, a covered wooden bench, and some directional road signs in Sea Lake, on route to Mildura. The cenotaph is dedicated to the memory of Trooper John Kiley (of the Victorian Imperial Battalion Bushmen, D Squardon). The wooden bench commemorates Councillor James Mudge. Both are located on Horace St (Calder Hwy), on the corner of Best St, Sea Lake. In the foreground, there is a directional road sign indicating 'CALDER HIGHWAY' and directions to various nearby towns. A larger road sign indicates the route to the town of Mildura. At that time, the Sea Lake District War Memorial had not yet been erected, but it now stands between the cenotaph and the wooden bench. In around March to April 1994, the Arthritis Foundation of Victoria (AFV) opened a second oppportunity shop in Moonee Ponds. This photo depicts a close up photo of the street sign for "Everage Street", taken from a low angle. The street, which runs beside a carpark behind the main shopping strip on Puckle St, was named after internationally renowed Australian satirist Barry Humphries' character, Dame Edna Everage. Crotonhurst was the estate of Mr William F. Langdon and his wife Sophia, the daughter of judge George H.F. Webb. A drawing room meeting was organised here by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild on 13 July 1926 hosted by Mrs Langdon. In an article published in the Australasian on Saturday 24 July 1926 we could read: " A drawing room meeting in connection with the Victoria Missions to Seamen took place on July 13, at Crotonhurst, Caulfield, the picturesque home of Mrs. W. F. Langdon, when the chaplain to the mission (the Rev. J. R. Weller) and other speakers explained the purpose of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, and urged its claim to interest and support from the people of Victoria. The chair was taken by the mayor of Caulfield (Councillor Page), who spoke sympathetically of the fine work being carried on "week-in week-out" by members of the guild. The honorary treasurer of the guild (Miss Tracy) spoke of the need for more annual subscribers." The estate was demolished in 1937.Drawing room meetings were organised by the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild to raise awareness and recruit new members.
