The administrative building along with four other buildings were part of the former Sunbury Asylum complex that operated in Sunbury on Jacksons Hill from 1876 to 1992. The brick buildings in the photograph are of the former Sunbury Asylum and F3 Ward is in the foreground. Initially the site on Jackson Hill also known as She0ak Hill opened as an Industrial School for orphaned or neglected children and in 1879 it became an asylum where it continued to function as an asylum until the Victorian Government closed it on 20th November 1992.The Sunbury Asylum played an important part in Sunbury and wider community's development over 150 years. throughout its existence there was much interaction between the residents, staff and local community, many of whom were employed at 'The Hill' as it was known locally. The building in the photograph is the Boiler House which was part of the former Sunbury Asylum. It was built in the 1920s to replace an older boiler. Coal and/or briquettes were burned to produce hot water and steam which was used to heat and supply hot water for the Asylum buildings. Steam attendants monitored and maintained the furnace and boiler seven days a week. It ceased production in October 1992 and since then has served as an Arts and Cultural complex for the local community.
