The Sunbury Memorial Hall was originally the Mechanic's Institute which was built on the present site in 1885. The hall was remodelled in 1922 and renamed the Sunbury Memorial Hall. The building was used until the 1960s as the meeting place by the Shire of Bulla Council. The twenty five debutantes made their debut in Sunbury at the Memorial Hall late c1950s or early 1960s. Mrs Aitken trained the girls for the event.Debutante Balls were a popular annual event in the local Sunbury community and were well attended. The people were attending the annual Fireman's Ball which was one of the popular events held in Sunbury. The move to build the Mechanics Institute was started in 1883 and the foundation stone was laid by Lady Janet Clarke in 1885. The Sunbury Gun was originally donated to the Shire of Bulla by the Clarke family. For many years it stood at the intersection of Barkly, Stawell and Macedon Streets. Over the years it became very dilapidated and as traffic along Macedon Street gradually increased it was decided to refresh and relocate it to a triangular site opposite the Memorial Hall in 1970. Chris. Christiansen was the photographer in Sunbury from 1892 to 1916. St. Andrew's Church in Sunbury have organised an annual flower show for many years and it is held in the Sunbury Memorial Hall.A black and white photo of a flower show mounted on a cream frame. The crowd are gathered around the former Rupertswood gun which originally was a piece of field equipment used by the Rupertswood Battery. The Clarke family eventually gave it the the residents of Sunbury. Before the Shire of Bulla built permanent offices in Macedon Street, the council used to meet in the Memorial Hall and had rooms there to conduct regular business. Some cottages were demolished to build the new offices which were completed and opened in 1966. Over the years as the shire's population increased, further additions were added. After Sunbury became part of Hume City Council, the former council building was occupied by Wester Water and Vic Roads.Apart from the former Shire of Bulla Roads Board office built in Sunbury in the 1860s, the 1966 building is the first council building to be built in Sunbury.A black and white photograph of a single storey office building and the surrounding garden.
